News: A reminder about reviews
There often is a general lack of quality within reviews and it has to get improved.

"Graphics: 10/10 They are awesome"
or "I pretty much disliked the overworld" does not cut it.

Give constructive criticism and try to include as much feedback on the hack as you can. Reviews are there to help the author improve on their work.
You should also check out this thread.

This is also my first news post :D

No. Narrowing it down to a number grade never works. 99% of the time there is no way to specify how exactly someone gets a 6 out of 10. Just give critical substance, that's all that is needed.

Urgh... just look at the review of Mario's Supper World

"Placing - 10/10
Good placing."

Placing of what?

I thought a review was there for people to know if the hack is worth playing or not, not to provide the maker with feedback. People using 1-10 scales rarely use them correctly regardless, as unless you review a lot of works it's very hard to see a consistent standard.

0/10 I didn't read the thread because it was way too long.

Also, some emulators might be buggy - ZSNES is infamous for bugs. bSNES and SNESGT are my personal recommendations for playing hacks, but if you must use savestates, go with SNESGT.

Who uses SNESGT today? And why bsnes is recommendation to playing hacks, if many has echo errors and crash under bsnes. If you would want to hear my opinion, snes9x 1.51 is best for playing hacks (because it's not as glitchy as zsnes, but it doesn't have accurate SPC emulation, so old hacks for some reason).

Also, I think that all reviews should have <number>/<number> for the rating, then the comments. I've seen people give the area's "grades" and I find it irritating when you don't get a clear X out of 10, but a: GFX: A+ Wow, They were awesome!

@ Resin: Because then it is not a review. If you want to give the author criticism about one detail of the hack, go on and PM him.

8/10. Although this really needed to be said, it might soon be forgotten. Also, there's still some pretty bad reviews out there.

Sometimes people just don't have anymore to say. For example I played a hack one a long time ago and I only had one real thing to say, and that one thing was a problem in the hack that I really wanted to point out because nobody else has and I wanted it fixed. Why should I have to give a whole huge detailed review if I just want to give one bit of criticism to improve the hack?

I suggest that a warning message about review quality (including a link to the announcement thread) should be placed beside the review box of peoples' hacks. Users (admittedly, myself included) might have considered reviews to be like those for flash animations on Newgrounds, that is, acceptable in the size of a simple comment.

Without any obvious notification for people to see (as I doubt that every user thinks it's required of them to read all of the announcements, and a temporary news post reminding people about review quality won't be read by everyone), I don't blame them.

...I just accidentally deleted someone's comment (it was the one between ToonLinktheFairy's and Yonowaaru's). Sorry. (Why isn't there a confirmation window of some kind?)

A review should also tell you what's bad about the hack, and not just what is good, right?

There are many graphics that I like. So don't expect that I'm pointing out glitched graphics. No offense.

I would add that reviews also help new users (and nonusers) navigate the hacks and featured hacks sections.

This is a good start, but honestly, I'm not sure a friendly neighborhood reminder is going to be enough...

Don't get me wrong though- I appreciate the post.
