Question:Nothing I do in the MAP16 stays, even when I save the level.
Answer:You need to press the F9 key when the MAP16 window is active to save it back to the ROM.
Question:What is safe to edit?
Answer:Editing anything is completely safe, but there are a few special pages that might return unexpected results. Pages x0 and x1 are the SMW default, and have a mix of tileset and non-tileset specfic graphic tiles. Page x2 is completely tileset specific. Pages x3-x3F are non-tileset specific. Pages x42-x7F are tiles used in background images (x40 and x41 are the SMW default).
Question:How do I change how a block will act, look, etc.?
Answer:Left click on a tile in the empty pages, and it will appear in the bottom of the window. First, define the 16x16 attributes by clicking "edit 16x16 attributes". The first four fields determine what graphic tiles the block will use. Use the 8x8 tile editor to find the tile numbers easily.
The next two fields define global settings for all four 8x8 tiles that make up the 16x16. You can define each 8x8 tile individually by closing this dialog, clicking which specific 8x8 tile you want to change in the 16x16 tile (It will appear by itself right under it if you did it correctly) and clicking "edit 8x8 attributes".
The last field in 16x16 attributes is what block this block will mimic from the original MAP16. For example, the concrete block is block 130 in the original MAP16, so putting 130 in this field will make it mimic the concrete block.
Once you've formed your block, don't forget to RIGHT click on an empty tile to paste it there, and press F9 to save it back to the ROM.
Question:How do I export and import MAP16 data?
Answer:Pressing F5 will export all MAP16 data in pages x0-x3F to a new file. Pressing F6 will import it if such a file exists. F7 will export all MAP16 data in pages x40-x7F to a new file. F8 will import it. F2 will export only the currently shown MAP16 page. F3 will load it back in.
Question:How do I see the other colors of pipes?
Answer:Press Page Down or Page Up on your keyboard to cycle through the pipe palettes.
Question:My graphics don't show up on the block in any level except the one I made it in.
Answer:Your tile is on page x2. Use a page between x3 and x3F, or if you are using a recent version of Lunar Magic, press Control + F1 to disable this behavior with a special hack.
