Insert sprites first.
No really, if you don't do this and the sprite code gets saved in a later ROM bank, the sprite won't appear in the level, at least if it has an init routine.
That's what Romi advised me when I asked why sprites weren't appearing and it's generally worked.
So put them in this order:
1. Sprites
2. Maybe blocks/level asm
3. Levels
4. GFX/Music
5. GFX/Music
6. Patches
This is because GFX and music can be stored pretty much anywhere from what I hear.

It's from a Master System game, a system which is pretty much NES level in terms of power. So yes, it's definitely basic for that reason alone.
But your Shade Man gfx look nice. Maybe you should try ripping the backgrounds next.

I'd think it would be, but you'd have to use some kind of long addressing or something. I don't know how it works, but Romi's message was as follows:
CodeHi.
I 'assume' it's due to the bank. When sprites are inserted, they try
to occupy free space from fore banks, and if sprites are too many,
some might end up settling in rear banks. Typically sprites have the
"phb : phk : plb : *blah* : plb" code to be able to access the ROM
conveniently, however, if the sprites were inserted, assuming your ROM
type is LoROM, at the bank $40 or behind, namely $200000~ in PC
address without the header, they would be unable to directly read from
or write to RAM $7E:0100~$7E:1FFF in which sprites' basic information
is stored without particularly specifying the bank with 24-bit
address, because if the data bank was set to $40 or behind, except $7E
of course, the direct 16-bit address would be no longer mirrored to
the RAM.
So first you might want to confirm where your sprites have been
inserted from the sprite tool's output. And if they were at where I
mentioned, the following might work.
1. back up your ROM (needless to say? :p)
2. Remove all ExGFX, custom music, etc. from your ROM.
3. Reinsert your sprites, hoping all the sprites will be in the fore banks.
4. Reinsert your data resource which you erased in the step 2
The step 2 is for hopefully making some space for sprites before the
bank $40 where data resource might have been previously taken up so
that sprites instead could be in there.

Post reorganised/fixed. No idea why it was messed up, I blame whoever edited the images/links.
No idea why they did this, the only removed links were to tutorials deliberately written to help people. Yes they were hosted on Japanese sites, but it's basically like censoring a link to Sitepoint or GameFAQs since the only 'sprites' given out were examples.
Also, I still wonder whether I just post the link to all carol's sprites here, data.zip. Because it's surprisingly easy to find on his website and exists in various other places too now, and I doubt anyone's still working on Brutal Mario any more...

It's a problem with the rock sprite. It's based on a sprite from Super Mario TKO (available with the hack download) and I don't think it was coded properly then either, so it kills you if you're standing on it in a certain way and hit the wall. I don't think dahnamics knows how to fix it either, and he's the one who coded the boss.

Okay, this is weird. The duplicate content doesn't even show in the editing box when I go to edit it out, and seems to be a message board/system problem.

Okay, this is weird. My tutorial seems to bugged, it duplicates about half the post when you view the topic yet doesn't show the duplicate section when you try to edit or quote it.
For example, if I look for ' 6. Thanks to/credit list' here:
http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=viewthread&t=33922
It comes up twice. But if I edit it, it only comes up once. Is this a board glitch somehow? I don't use a custom layout or anything...

Apparently SNN said he fixed it by disabling my layout for the post. But the weird thing is, I don't HAVE a layout. I just have a line of text with a link in it in the post footer. I don't even use any div tags.
Oh well, should now be fixed. Won't be editing it again.

Only problem there is contacting carol is nearly impossible nowadays, I think the only practical way would be to post in the VIP 6 threads on 2ch (could be a good idea for anyone who wants to end all this and just flat out ask whether he'll just let all the resources be released).
I'm also surprised no one found data.zip before, it was hardly the most complex file name in the world to guess, yet no one figured it out without being linked to it. I'd have thought at least someone online would have brute forced it.
Still, I won't post the link directly until someone asks him whether they can be released or not. I'm just considering it purely because I don't see much of a future for smw stuff and Brutal Mario as a whole is inches from becoming abandonware by now.

Ah, you know what? It's not like carol hasn't basically asked for this, why else would he host his stuff on his site if he didn't want it reused? Here's his resources:
http://dragon.s151.xrea.com/data.zip
Also, to the person who wanted it, here's General Guy:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ez6mrqpaxzpx8ws/GeneralGuy.zip
Undefinied can't upload or fix it any more, or at least won't because he told me he's quit ROM hacking altogether. And since the mods rejected the sprite the last time he submitted it, I uploaded it to my file hosting account.

Err, sorry to bother anyone, but by accepted, does that mean you plan to port this theme? Or did you try and find it too difficult?

You can't fit 300 pieces of custom music in a ROM though. Any .bnk or .brr files use quite a bit of space and depending on how large the .txts file size is, you could be limited to far less.

Mario's Star Quest and anything by DoomDragon including the Castlevania remake. They had a lot of promise, original graphics and sprites and ideas in general and seemed like they would have been decent hacks had they not be abandoned/cancelled.
Super Mario LD. I have no idea if it's truly 'cancelled', since the creator is as reclusive as they come and doesn't even have a website or anything, but it was an interesting Japanese hack with Brutal Mario level asm, really cool sampled music and a ton of original ideas and ripped graphics. Seems to appear on hack hosting sites at semi random now, both demos was pulled from a previous one.
Brutal Mario in general. Not a great hack level design wise, but you have to admit it had promise and looked interesting. Is it cancelled? Carol says no as far as I can tell but progress is so slow/non existant I suspect it's been entirely abandoned by now.

Why not just extract them from Brutal Mario? This is just stuff from the cheap demo, so basically just download that and extract the gfx files, then find the ones you need.

Originally posted by SunsAt first, I kinda thought the graphics, music, ASM and such from ASMWCP would be released on the site, at least after a year or so like Supertails did with his Elementia graphics. I mean, where's the fun and versatility for graphics and music that are only going to be used once or twice? When my secretive project is released, I'm eventually going to make the graphics and music public after some time (6 months to a year for the sake of novelty). I remember I made these pharaoh koopa graphics early on that got used by... quite a few people; it was pretty cool to see myself being credited. I mean, this kind if thing should be fine as long as credit is given where credit is due. I don't know what you guys are getting so worked up about.
Well a lot of the resources were, at least the ASM (Undine, Tap Tap the Red Nose, Bowser, Giant Koopa and Giant Spiny boss were released, as were most of the small sprites found in levels). And finding a copy of the final boss is pretty simple too...
But I see your point. No point in keeping resources all secretive and what not, especially not the ones ripped/recreated from other games. On a similar note, I've often wondered why stuff from the likes of Panic in the Mushroom Kingdom 1 and 2, Bowser's Return, etc wasn't released afterwards as well, it's all stuff from other games and would have literally doubled the size of the graphics section.
I also think hacks should have their resources released to the community when they're cancelled as well. Why make things that'll never get used?

You know what? Don't fix the graphics 'clashes'. Everyone here makes way too much of a big deal about it when frankly average joe doesn't give a toss about what graphics 'clash'. Mushroom Kingdom Fusion and Super Mario Fusion have clashing graphics. No one cares. So does I Wanna be the Guy. No one cares. Smash Bros Flash and Crusade. No one cares. Same with Abobos Big Adventure. People don't give a toss, the only ones who do are basically nerds.
If you like the gfx as are, leave them as is.
If you want to fix one thing though, fix the bosses. They're kind of boring as is, they generally just use the same attacks and patterns. It's blatantly obvious you use the ultimate n00b boss, so why not actually use it to its full potential? Make Dark Mario's attack pattern change every few steps and change his graphics along with it. Make him generate sprites to hurt Mario, use on/off functionality and the p switch effect to make custom blocks activate or animation start. Make an invisible hurt block that activates to become a giant screen filling laser or something. Don't just use bosses which run back and forth and shoot extended sprite fireballs.

Wooow, I can't disagree more with you there, buddy. Now explain to me why the "average joe doesn't give a toss about them" while you just said a lot of people complain about it. You're contradicting yourself there. Who says a lot of people don't care about it? It isn't eye-pleasing and just looks rather unprofessional. And for the record, IWBTG didn't have that many clashes at all. And why would people be nerds if they simply dislike something? You're not making sense.
But yeah Silver, I hope you'll port it to a new ROM and fix that. Your hack would be a lot better if you could improve your design and remove those clashes. Good luck with it. ^_^
Not being contradictory. Think of it like this. How many million views does your average Brutal Mario video get on Youtube, how many likes?
Sure people on certain sites like this one and maybe in some cases Mario Fan Games Galaxy care about it, but the average person who watches videos online and posts about lolcats and whatever and watches Youtube poop or just plays games rather than hacks them doesn't care. For them its more like 'cool, my favourite music or graphics are in this game! Mario's killing Mega Man enemies in Kirby world!'
Besides, hacks don't have to be professional.
But enough of that argument. Also, silver should port his hack to a new rom like everyone said, I've had the same issue where one minor change caused the hack to glitch and crash on load, and it's fixable if you port it.
