Hello, i have been lurking since before level sign ups ( since I'm a noob when it comes to rom hacking) however i think i have an idea that might please everyone. i call it the Nightmirror.

plot: After finishing the final real level Mario wanders into the very core of the dream realm. This core? A mix of technology and the arcane that powers the very realm its self... The Nightmirror a terrible device that uses the raw power of nightmares as its fuel, creating the dream like lands Mario has explored to try and stop him, or anyone else who isn't Norveg, from reaching it.

the "stage": The level would be simple with just a power up supply room to start in before entering the boss fight in the next room. I estimate it having at least 5 phases with a catch, each phase is actually easier than the one before, with the final one being something like a feeble old, mechanized Mario clone that's trying to jump on your head, only taking a single jump himself to beat. With each passing stage the nightmirror would get cracks in it, the final blow making it shatter with a powerful earthquake shaking the level, signaling that the dream world is falling apart.

how this pleases everyone: Each phase is a nightmare being created by the Nightmirror, thus allowing for a ton of variety in the phases as well as allowing all of the current ideas to make it in. ( For example the ascended deedle ball could be one of the last phases while the giant mecha could be one of the 1st.)

and that's my idea, feel free to ignore it if you feel it wouldn't fit for whatever reason. just thought I'd do my part to try and help out.
hello, i suggested something earlier but now i have a more thought out idea for you guys.. using ideas that are popular to make an interesting boss. may i present...

the phanto king

appearance: a giant phanto mask with a 3 pointed crown floating a couple inch's above its head, the outer 2 points resembling horns (the musical kind), a dark purple nightmare smoke pouring out of them and a orb that's swirling with both dark purple and pink energy floating just above the middle point. phanto king also has 3 crystals that he commands, each having separate hp from him.

phanto king hp: 5-10

red crystal hp: 3

blue crystal hp: 3

yellow crystal hp: 3

attacks

phanto king

1. summon regular phantos to try and attack mario.

2.: make something via the smoke his crown is emitting. if pink smoke comes out it will form a good item for mario or a key, which is the only way to actually damage the phanto king.

3. phanto king will split in half while his crown raises off the top of the screen, a ball of nightmares where he once was that will kill mario if he touches it. ( think marx's insta kill attack in kirby super star) note phanto king will only do this attack when hes below 20% of his health

red crystal

1. spit a Podoboo at mario. the podoboo will bounce on the screen 2-3 times before flying off screen.

2. the red crystal will move to one side of the screen and dash at mario as a high speed fireball. after attack the crystal will blink and float low to the ground for a few moments, allowing mario to damage it

yellow crystal

1. the yellow crystal will float above marios head for a moment before releasing a sumo bros. thunder bolt at him.

2. the yellow crystal will start sparkling as if it got a starman before lowering to the floor and spinning like a top. at the end of this attack the crystal will flash, letting mario know its vulnerable.

blue crystal

1. the blue crystal heads to one of the upper corners of the screen and starts rapidly firing blue ice crystals in a sweeping motion. best way to dodge is to head to the opposite corner of the screen so there's more space between the ice bullets.

2. the blue crystal starts chasing mario like a fast boo for a few moments, a light blue mist gathering around it. after those few moments the blue crystal will stop in its tracks and release a large structure of ice in the shape of a spiky snowflake. once the snowflake of death shatters the blue crystal will flash for a few moments so mario can give it a good stomp.

ending

once the phanto king is defeated any remaining crystals will instantly shatter before cracks start to rapidly form on the phanto king. as the orb starts to turn more and more pink, the phanto king shattering into hundreds of pieces the moment it turns fully pink and lifts off his head. then the pink orb of dreams will float down to about marios head away from the ground. at this point the orb of dreams acts as a goal sphere and touching it will end the level.

as you can see this idea combines a few subtle references to dream related stuff from other nintendo series as well as uses some of the most popular ideas from this topic. also the boss can get away with so much health as its attacks are a joke once you get the crystals down. feel free to suggest additions or to flat out ignore this idea if you don't like it. i just thought I'd give you another idea for the boss.

how about a few types of broken pipes? like i can think of a pipe that's been sliced diagonally making it look like a piece of bamboo or one whose top has been ripped off, leaving a jagged set of spikes on it.

Well, a 200 coins requirement would still mean that someone who made sure to collect all the coins in each level before moving on to the next would be able to encounter Norveg and whatever the bonus boss ends up being in the boss rush before he does in the main game, wouldn't it? A requirement that all the bosses has been beaten before the mode is unlocked would probably be a good idea.

perhaps the boss rush mode could work similarly to the master course tournament from legend of legaia? that tournament's last 3-4 rounds consisted of boss fights from later in the game, yet they were also locked out of the tournament until after you beat the boss normally, instead acting as if the player beat it. ( or perhaps it could cut to an empty version of the boss's chamber with a message saying you must continue the main game to advance further)
i like this idea as well.. also is it just me or does the idea for section 2 remind anyone of that glowing spheres bonus stage in sonic 3?
if i may make a suggestion, how about doing something similar to This Dungeon from legend of legaia. like perhaps the ground could look like regular ground at times but though exanimation will periodically turn into say, a colored mist or clouds ( or even a liquid metal like substance) before returning to a solid-ish state?
i'm not sure how possible this would be.. but perhaps instead of in game reality breaking down through out the fight.. perhaps instead the fourth wall breaks down though the tree screwing with the genre of the game through out the fight? heres a quick example to show what i mean

phase 1: appears to be your run of the mill platformer fight that seems dissapointingly easy. a simple throw block and the tree in the back ground trying to attack you. simply throw the block into the tree. ( or perhaps another gong?) to finish the phase with everything appearing to glitch out into a pixelated mess.

phase 2: the pixels phase back into a coherent form but now the game has changed into a zelda style adventure game. ( still mario vs the dreamer/tree though) mario must search a small maze of rooms to locate a fire flower then hit the tree with 3 fire balls before the screen once agian gos pixelated, signaling phase 3

phase 3: now the name of the game is racing. mario is in his cart and must chase down the dreamer through a race track until he grabs a star. at which point tackling the tree once would damage it and send us to phase 4.

phase 4: now we're playing a shump. mario must fire his fireballs into the tree about 10 times while dodging various attacks touhou style.

phase 5: things are back to being a platformer, the tree nearly losing its grip on the dreamer. however now there is no law at all in this land. causing the physics to go balistic and unpredictable.. if you can figure out the puzzle of reaching the dreamer and stepping on her head you break her free, ending the battle.
