Yes, I am talking about a patch that simply counts as soon as the game starts and then displayed on a certain screen when the game is done and shows the total time it took for the player to beat the game.

I honestly think that every game deserves this as there are tons of people in the speed running community.
Weird Al Yankovic does parody songs based on copyrighted songs. There are also remix artists which take clips from movies and other songs and mash them together to make a new unique song.

I just looked at Weird Al's youtube video "White and Nerdy", and it has over 123 million views. So obviously parody or derivative works have a place and are valued in our society.

This is just my opinion, but I think rom hacking falls under this category.

Yes, it is copyrighted content, but it is remixed in a new way. If only Nintendo would give consent to do this then it could actually be legal, but they refuse to participate in the idea.

I think game companies should offer developers of fan games some kind of cut with their games. Say you make a Nintendo fan game, well they could host it on their online store and split the sales revenue it takes in. There could even be a special category just for fan made works.

The truth is, there is a lot of creative talent out there and every rom hacker or developer has their own idea on how to interpret an established franchise.

Just look up Mario fan artwork and see all of the diversity and different interpretations that artists give on their own versions of Mario.

What I'm basically saying is that companies need to be more flexible with their intellectual property and their fan base. Allowing other creative minds to be involved could possibly lead to the IP growing in popularity.
SEGA Activator motion controller.
Okay so this isn't dead believe it or not.

So my friend just encouraged me to work on this project. However I've been flip flopping back and forth between an Atari 2600 style game like this or an more of an 8 bit looking game.

Well, what I will probably do at least right now is make the Atari 2600 version. The goal is to possibly get it done by the mid summer.

- It will probably have no music (unless someone wants to make some tracks just for the game)

- It will probably have very simple graphics. The main character will just be a square. lol

- I will focus on level design and game play.

- I will try and make it a good game, but it will be pretty simplistic.

Wish me luck.
While some might have thought that this project is dead... it isn't. It just takes time to think of ideas and such.

Sometimes ideas just come to me on the fly. The hardest thing is to create a mental database of all of the assets on this site. All of my idea basically come from preexisting resources and so I need to get more acquainted with the resources such as blocks and sprites to then let my mind ponder upon them to create content.

Some ideas with extending blocks.

I think the 1000th hack entry was the member ShadoWingx

I think they should get a trophy or something. At least an announcement on the homepage. I mean you guys did it for the 5,00,000,000 page view when that happened.
Okay I think I have an idea for what I'm going to do.

There are two visions that I have for this hack.

1 is the ninja idea that I have shown

2 is the atari 2600 style hack

What I think I'm going to work on is the Atari 2600 style hack. The game will have primitive graphics basically because I might have to draw stuff myself. And strangely the game will have no direct goal. It will be more based on exploring and interacting with the environment or level. It's going to be one of those games where if some people play it they will say WTF and not understand it.

So it will be like...

- No enemies to kill
- No enemies trying to kill the player
- No goal to achieve
- No music
- The focus is about exploring and interacting
im pretty sure the there exists emulators where you don't need a coin slot to play snes games.
Download a well coded block or sprite and see if you can understand the programming.

Then change things around like replace one number with another or put in different opcodes and see what happens. You experiment with code to try and understand what its doing.

It takes time, first learn opcodes like LDA, STA, BEQ then try and apply them. Spend literally days just playing with code and looking at the outcomes when you run it.
So when I come to this site it shows the users who are here, but it also shows Bots and there are like 272 Bots.

So what the heck is a Bot? I'm assuming that it is like a AI of some sort. Like a user, but not a human user who is assigned some tasks or something. For example, I think there are Bots that whenever you upload a hack they save a copy for a database of some sort.

But how many Bots do you really need? And if I were to code a Bot how then do I get my Bot to be allowed to do things on the site?

Next question is... Sometimes in the main banner that says "Your Primary SMW Hacking Resource" sometimes there is a muncher right in front of Mario's jumping pose. I can only imagine that this is some kind of joke funny thing... as if Mario is about to die and run right into a muncher. But sometimes it comes and goes and I don't know why.

Another question.... In the menu to the right of the screen on this site at the bottom of what is enclosed in the green pipes there is a P-switch graphic and you can press it or not. But I have no idea what it does. Can someone tell me what this does?

Anyway, thanks for reading.
Quote
The muncher is a kind of easter egg that's caused by the tip of the day box. One of the tips contains CSS that places a muncher on-screen. The reason it's not always there is that the tip display is random and only one of them has the CSS.

I NEVER would have ever guessed this ever. Boy there are some talented coders here who simply want to show off just for the sake of it. lol
Someone told me that the white lines "clouds" in the sky that follow after an airplane passes are really "chem trials". Chemical trails that the government sprays onto the land to try and poison because they want the population to decrease and Illuminati and blah blah.
So I've been reading a lot about copyrights and how long they last and such and apparently the Mickey Mouse Steam Boat Willie cartoon will fall within public domain in 2023. That original cartoon was published in 1928.

The interesting thing is that Disney has been putting up lots of money to actually change the copyright laws to extend copyright several times in the past to prevent their works from falling into public domain. Which means that Steam Boat Willie should have entered public domain years ago. In other words if you have enough money you can change the laws to how you please.

But Disney might not be able to continue extending the copyright forever. So in 2023 Steam Boat Willie might really enter public domain. Now I think this just allows you to use that Steam Boat Willie cartoon however you please, but I think as long as Disney has the trademark on Mickey they still own Mickey. I know, kind of strange.

So what does this mean. Well if a work has a copyright that last 95 years such as that of the Steam Boat Willie cartoon, then eventually it will expire and you can use it legally.

Super Mario World, lets say that it was first published in 1990, that means that 95 years later it will enter public domain in the year 2085.

This means that you can actually own your rom hack then and wouldn't ever have to worry about Nintendo saying anything. You could post the actual edited rom instead of just releasing a patch.

If SMW rom hacking is still around in 2085 it could be an actual legitimate thing.

Anyway, I'm not a lawyer so don't take my exact work on this, but I believe that the copyright will eventually end and SMW will literally be free for anyone to do whatever they want with it legally.
