Tip: If you place too many sprites on the same screen, it will slow the game down and cause frustration to the player.

Here is my first real attempt at game modding. I was hoping to submit it to C3 but for some reason I can't post any threads on there.

Anyways, the game was lightly influenced by old school 2d adventure games and design. This was created over the course of two months for a different contest and plan on elaborating on this in the future. So consider this Massimo Version I.

This is 3 games in one: Regular Massimo, Massimo 8Bit, and MassiBits. The latter two can be unlocked midway through the game. There's 7 areas with 25+ unique stages. Go into the game expecting something like Mario, then you'll most likely be disappointed. I tried my best at giving this game its own unique look, pacing, and set of rules. I removed a lot of the usual Mario elements, blanded the style and tried to bring out its personality in other ways.

I hope you guys enjoy!

Here's some pics:

Thanks for the comments guys! One thing I tried to put a heavy emphases on is the atmosphere, similar to games like Knytt, Metroid and other old style 2d adventure games. Let me know what you think of it! :-D

Here's some more pics including one from MassiBits:

I recently updated the patch to v1.1. There was a minor bug in the last secret stage of the game that could prevent you from getting to the final ending. Just apply it to another clean SMW rom and keep the file name the same and it should work with your current save states.

Massimo, a rugged, bearded hobo who lives in a hole in the ground and got bored one day so he decided to explore the world. That's pretty much the gist of it.
Massimo has been updated to Version 1.3. This fixes a few game breaking problems in the final levels like freezing and going into the special world color scheme when you're not supposed to. Hopefully this will be the last of the bug fixes.

Long delayed bump. Filefront had removed my game without me knowing so I had to reupload it. For those that missed this, here is another chance to check it out. The game here is technically complete, but I'm planning on picking this back up this coming up year and turning it into the game I originally wanted it to be.

Hope you all enjoy!

Yikes!

Sorry everyone. Could've sworn it worked when I tested it a while back. Might've gotten mixed up somehow. Anyways here is a new link which should work. Let me know if there's anymore problems.

Thanks guys!

The game plays out a bit like an adventure game, similar to Metroid. As you gain items you use them to gain access to new areas. While I prefer players to figure things out on their own, I have constructed two strat guides to help you out.

The first is a general walkthrough. The second is a guide to the secrets of Massimo (which are many). There are spoilers in the second guide so you may not want to look at that until you have finished.

Also before anyone bring it up, the last level is intentionally long. You could either go through it the intended way (an epic trek into the depths of hell to see how far you can get), or just savestate between each stage transition.
So did anyone get a chance to find and playthrough MassiBits and Massi8Bit? I'm curious as to what everyone's thoughts were for those segments and the game in general.

I found them(I also found Massibits w/out a walkthrough guide ^^).
I got stuck on one or the other in a trap where you couldn't die(no time limit), and I had no backup savestates, and stopped there D:

Hmm, really?

Could you describe where you were at or provide a screen grab?
Hello everyone! Long time, no see.

I noticed that the Massimo file has been missing for quite some time and needed to rectify that. I recently uploaded the hack to Romhacking.net for a more permanent access. Now those who never got a chance to play the game due to missing files can experience the shallow adventures of Massimo!

Now unlike the previous .zips this one doesn't have the wallpapers or the sweeping Massimo theme included. It does however contain a quickie strat guide for lost adventurers and also the bonus game Mario's Mini Adventure.

Also for those who enjoyed Massimo I have been working on a spiritual successor to it. It's not a mod, but the game has a very similar vibe and flow. I'll post some stuff on this in the near future if people are interested. :)
I'll put something together pretty soon to show my new game. I started working on it since I finished Massimo 2 years ago and have been trying to make the game that I wanted to make out of Massimo. I have enough done to feel comfortable showing it.

I also played Massimo fairly recently for the first time in almost two years. It was a very interesting experience to play my own game after not seeing it for so long. I did shake my head at some areas of the game I could've done a lot better, I even forgot where I put all the items!

As far as "artistic" atmosphere? Eh, that's what I like. I enjoy making visually interesting levels. I feel a thick atmosphere helps draw the player into the world more. From the recent replay I do think I kind of overdid it with the silent areas. Also I was developing the levels one after another so if you only played the early levels then you might like my later stuff from Yg on where I started to better grasp what I could do with Lunar Magic (especially when you get to the hidden game MassiBits).
Yeah I made this game a little over 2 years ago I think before the midpoint patch came out. Had I had it to work with then I would've used it. Originally I wanted the game to be one seemless world but due to my limitations at the time I eventually broke it up into large level chunks and let the play decide if they want to use save states as checkpoints or not.

Unfortunately I haven't touched this or Lunar Magic since then so I've forgotten a lot of stuff. If I can find time away from life and working on my current game I'll look into reworking Massimo to fix some of the problems people have been having and maybe make it open world again.
