Tip: Keep track of ALL patches and hex edits in case you need to transfer your data to a new ROM. It's definitely worth the trouble.

People. :-p
What's with the lack of obvious uses for this?

1) Save every few hours, and before bed. If I find I've wasted time, stayed up too late, slept in and missed the bus, etc, reload and try again. If I have enough save slots (I can rename the save files right?), do similar every week/month/year, so I can go back further if I don't realize until later that something's gone wrong.

2) When you really want to impress/tell off someone, save and have infinite tries to say/do just the right thing. You'd be the most popular guy in school because you always know just what to say. If you know you're better off keeping your mouth shut, you can reload once you're finished venting and/or kicking their ass.

3) There is no three.

4) Save before a test, job interview, or other important event.

5) JOYRIDING! :D

6) For that matter, save every so often while driving. If you get into an accident or get pulled over, reload and drive more carefully and/or take a different route.

7) Test whether you can save, sleep, reload, and still be well-rested. If so, do this every night, and it'll be as if you function without sleep - your sleep will effectively occupy no amount of time.

8) Save before studying something. Reload when done. Again, your studying will have occupied no time, so you can spend all day goofing off.

And yes, I would definitely hack the save states. I don't think just adjusting your bank account balance would be a good idea though. It'd be difficult to track down all the variables that need to stay in sync (the balance in the master system, secondary systems, backup copies, hard copies, etc) - if some shot up and others didn't, someone would notice. (Besides, just use it to win the lottery.) However, you might hack your maximum running speed and jumping height, your (or an enemy's/giant chunk of gold's/etc) coordinates, opinions, etc... you could even set the speed of the flow of time back to a sane value instead of whatever ridiculously fast speed it's at now. >_>

...you could potentially figure out the object structures in the save states, and create new objects... and people... *cough*

ROCK. THE. FUCK. OUT.
Wow. That's the kind of thing you never expect to happen.

Hey, irony.
Huge, NSFW, and awesome. Dual monitors FTW.

I hate icons uglifying the pictures, so I avoid them as much as possible. I finally managed to find a dark theme that doesn't totally suck. :D

I don't think people are all hyped over Obama because of any hypnosis or supernatural trickery. I think they're just glad to finally have a president with a brain. :-p
Lonely, boring Saturday. D:
Yeah, the idea is to keep it compatible with existing patches. I was thinking C++ with Boost; I haven't used Boost before but it seems very useful and this would be a good way to get familiar with it. With good design it's not especially difficult to make something that works on Windows and Linux (having to be compiled for each), especially since GTK does most of it for you.
You could also enable features that xkas v6 didn't have (since that's the version most patches were written for) with a metadata tag.

Implementing a scripting language is a huge pain, and then people would have to learn it. Using Lua is a lot easier. Although I'm not really sure how necessary it is. For the most part, to customize something you'd only need to edit the ASM file; with some #if/#else support in the preprocessor, you'd be able to just have a few lines at the top like "set to 0 for this, 1 for that". The patcher might be able to find these lines and pop up a small dialog box where you can choose the options. Can you think of any cases where a script is really necessary?
You can always change the design so that if you mess up, you have to backtrack a bit, or take a more difficult route.
Make a block with the graphics of a POW behind a net. If the "Mario is behind objects" flag is set (look at the RAM map), it does the POW effect if hit from above, and is solid from other sides. Otherwise it acts like a net tile.

If you had Koopas that might bump into it, you'd have to figure out how to determine which side they're on. I'm not sure how to do that.

You need to make multiple copies of that block - one to switch to level 1 messages, another for level 2, etc. Make them invisible and give them the behaviour 0x25. Under each message box, put one of those blocks. That way Mario will touch the block before he hits the message box, and switch the message.

However, don't those blocks also cause issues with using Start+Select to exit the level?
Name: made it up ages ago, because I was hacking Gameshark codes like mad.
Avatar (or rather, the image to the left of this text, which I use in lieu of an avatar here): <3 Rena. \o/ Cropped from a scan of a picture in the Japanese .hack//Twilight manga. My wallpaper is made from the same image.
On sites without layouts, I use this as an avatar:

Same idea, but smaller. (Sometimes I use a larger crop if the site allows it.)

I met a Japanese girl named Apple once. And another named Miki (pronounced Mickey, just like a certain mouse you may know), which leads into a long depressing story I don't feel like typing out.

I'd like to meet a girl named Sakura (or maybe Kagome), just so I can pronounce it correctly. :P People so often get those wrong.

Also, I just looked up in the corner and saw:

Sleep and do other boring things while time is frozen, so they don't occupy any of my spare time.

[edit] Wait, I fail. If I could only do it once, I'd have to do something totally epic. Time to hit up some banks.

Gary Larson covered this. A guy is shown walking around wearing the world's first canine-to-English translator. He's disappointed to discover that dogs don't have much of a vocabulary: "Hey! Hey hey! Heeeeeeyyyy. Hey hey hey! Hey!!"
