I rated this 4/5 because I think it is fun, but that there are some things that could be improved. I'm going to try a much more bulleted sort of review than usual:
First thing's first: I REALLY think the "You should use savestates" thing is a bad thing to put in your description. I nearly didn't play this, because I just figured "It's probably kaizo trash", but my curiosity overwhelmed me.
This hack is tough in a few levels, but it's not THAT hard, and if you honestly believe your work requires savestates to beat, then perhaps you shouldn't be uploading the hack as anything lower than 'Kaizo' difficulty (In my opinion). This is more advice for the future, though, because I didn't find this hack to be kaizoish at all.
If you hit select while dying, you cancel out of the death. Is this intended? I kind of think that makes things reasonable, given how easy it is to die. You might want to point this out to the player, though.
On the other hand, should select not take you back to the midpoint? This stuff is kind of unclear. The way I played this was that I would hit select when I died to avoid losing a life unless I specifically wanted to respawn at a midpoint.
I appreciate that the music continues if you hit select. So the player isn't subject to hearing the start of a stage's music over and over.
I find it weird that you disappear while picking an item up, is there a missing animation or something?
There are 7 exits, not 6.
Also, I managed to jump. Once. I don't know why, but it happened. I can only assume I am the greatest goomba, and have begun to spontaneously evolve.
The text has really weird capitalization. Not a huge deal, but capitals appear to just be used at random.
Some level notes:
You CAN die on Level 1 by falling down a pit, is this intended? It does seem to be the only way to benefit from the midpoint.
In Level 2 is a muncher that is barely visible and above a springboard. It's kind of an unfair death for the player, don't you think? [Screenshot]
Level 3 is kind of the hardest stage in the game, I think. The difficulty curve is a bit weird in my opinion.
There is some vaguely pointed ground in Level 5 that isn't quite clear about its spikeness. I feel like that could be conveyed better. It's not the end of the world, given the ability to cancel the death function, but it's definitely something that could be made clearer.
The flying cheep cheeps in Level 6 feel out of place. Since you're customizing graphics anyway, perhaps making them birds or something would be suitable.
I loved level 7, but perhaps making the cutscene skippable in case the relatively challenging boss fight goes poorly.
I remember playing this in an older version, but it was so frustrating that I don't see myself playing this one. I'm NOT saying this hack is that bad, though, but it is really difficult to play.
The only thing I expect is that the boss is easier than in the first version, because OMFG what a hard battle! Geez...
