| Description: | This is my second serious hack. I made this hack completely vanilla (with the exception of some Map16 editing) and I hope will be a fun rom hack to play. |

Detailed Review
Story: The story is pretty sweet and simple: Toad wants Mario to come back home because "there are monsters everywhere." The story, however, fails to continue from there. Although I could dock points for that, you can't do too much story in a 5-level hack, so I'll leave your score untouched. Rating: 7/10
Overworld: The overworld was changed in this hack, and again, there's not much you can do with 5 levels. However, the design was simple and yet visually appealing, paths didn't look out of place, and the scenery you used was appropriate. Excellent overworld. Rating: 9/10
Music: Vanilla music. However, there isn't a problem with this for me, as all your tunes fit the levels well (the platform level and "high in the sky" come to mind) Well done here. Rating: 9/10
Level Design: Quite easy, and the dragon coins were not hard to find, for the most part. The dragon coin in the castle with the rotating platform was a bit annoying to get, but that was the only real frustration with me. The design of the levels themselves was well done. Quite a bit of variety. Rating: 8/10
Other: Reznor was an interesting way to end the hack, instead of using one of the Koopa Kids. I wasn't expecting that ending, and I actually enjoyed it. Props to you for that. Points: +2
Favorite Level: Reznor Castle. By far. I love playing castle levels, and yours, although a tad bit easy, was well designed. Points: +2
Final Word: There's not a whole lot to work with regarding a five-level hack, but this particular mod has done a satisfactory job of meeting the standard of good level design, good music, and good overworld. The story is my only complaint, but again, not much to work with in 5 levels.
My overall score is the total of the scores of four elements: story, overworld, music, and level design. Any other notable things, I add bonus points to. The total score is out of 40 points.

Name: 5 Level Hack

Story - 4/10
It started off with Toad asking for help as monsters were attacking but that's all there is to it. No extra info and no outcome after beating the castle. A couple more messages from Toad and even a thank you at the end would've raised this score.
Graphics - 8/10
Nice use of Vanilla graphics but the palettes weren't changed and the last Thwomp was just floating in the air, it looked kind of weird.
Music - 10/10
Vanilla. Correct music used in the correct places.
Overworld - 7/10
Nothing wrong here but it was a bit bland. Some more decoration would have helped a player get into the game easier.
Gameplay - 8/10
The levels were fun but a bit short. The difficulty curve felt perfect. Started to get slightly difficult at "Bomb-omb Forest" and harder until the Castle which was so annyoingly yet fittingly difficult as the last level.
Design - 4/10
The design wasn't that bad although I disliked some things. The locations of the Dragon Coins were supposed to be challenging to find but some were just left out in the middle of the level. The Koopas in "Dino Isle" interacted weirdly with some dirt tiles. Also the title screen was unchanged and some levels could have used more time. Some levels had several repetitive jumps pasted a few times. Midway in "Chainsaw Hights" didn't work.
Replay Value - 5/10
No secret exits. Dragon coins. Enough for half marks.
Extra Points:
-4 for bad spellings/grammar
+1 for Reznor
Total: 43/70 or 6.1/10
Rating: 6/10
tl;dr
Somewhat mediocre hack that was fun to play but I probably won't go back to it again. Next time add some secret exits and maybe some custom stuff. I liked the design but next time some thorough testing will help.

| Review by Metalbenderjem | Hmm, this hack was okay. The levels seemed bland though, due to them lacking enemies at points, and sometimes just seeming empty/incomplete. If you changed the palettes to something more appealing, it could possibly help your hack overall. In parts of levels there showed great level design, but it would help if you were able to explore the level instead of going in one direction the entire level, then climbing a vine every now and then only to get a dragon coin... The levels were fun though.
Some good things about you’re hack was; that they showed good level design, were lag-free, and telling you’re gamer to find the dragon coins… (Do I sense a challenge?)
Overall the hack was a solid six. (6-10) | | Posted by: Metalbenderjem - 2008-12-20 02:22:57 AM |

| Review by Soul2Limbo | Short & sweet hack...
~~GRAPHICS~~ (7/10)
This hack utilizes the original SMW graphics and that is not a bad thing. While there are no new graphical elements to be found in your hack, at least it is glitch-free... and that's what saved you in this department. Also, your overworld was nicely put together. I like how you made your overworld simple and clean & you demonstrated that you can create oveworld events which is a step above most crappy hacks. Your graphics deserve a 7 I do believe.
~~GAMEPLAY~~ (7/10)
The levels were very fun to play and I enjoyed every level except for the castle at the end. Reznors Castle was quite difficult for a 1st castle, and the average beginner SMW player would get slaughtered by this level. However, the levels before the castle are just plain fun to barrel through. Each level had something new I've never seen before, but they were a bit lacking in the secret areas. The only glitch with the gameplay is that after completing the castle, you go up and off the map.... and you can't do a darn thing afterwards
~~MUSIC~~ (7/10)
I see you like the original SMW music. In my opinion, the SMW musical score deserves what is stated (7/10). Throw in some custom music for your next hack because people love to rip on hacks that don't use custom music. But I'm rating this bad boy on the music, and the original SMW music is good, except the music is way too freaking happy all the time and that's my only real problem with the SMW soundtrack.
~~STORY~~ (5/10)
You didn't actually develop a plot so it's difficult to give you a score here. At least you tell the player that this is a hack with some levels to play, and you alert the player at the end that they have completed the hack.
~~REPLAY VALUE~~ (7/10)
Since the hack is not too difficult and does not take long to complete, anyone could pick this hack up again and beat it for kicks. I believe that your fun level design will attract people back to this hack to beat it again, but they may quit before the castle... lol. Try to throw in a secret level or two next time...
---------
-SUMMARY-
---------
After averaging your total score, you receive a 6.8 out of 10 possible points. Rounding up you basically get a 7, and I believe this score accurately reflects the work put into this hack. The only true problems with the hack are the castle and the issue after completing the castle. Other than that your level design is good and I look forward to your next hack!! | | Posted by: Soul2Limbo - 2008-11-30 05:31:38 PM |

| Review by WiiKyle | I thought it was ok. The story was interesting enough but it just kinds stood there with no closure.
The levels were interesting except for a couple spots where the difficulty unnecessarily jumped for a bit.
Standard SMW graphics with not much change is not good.
The music again is standard which doesn't help nor really hurt the hack.
Some good things I can point out are that the hack is glitch-free except for after you beat the Castle, you'll keep walking upwards forever. This is easily fixable by putting a level right up above the castle or something. Some other good things could be the relatively balanced difficulty and the variety of the levels.
Overall, the hack was fun but pretty average otherwise. 5/10 | | Posted by: WiiKyle - 2008-11-19 03:21:48 PM |
