One after noon while mario was out for a walk, he stumbles on a secret tunnel going into the ground, one that he has never seen before. Mario decides not to go alone, so he goes home to ask Luigi if he wants to come with him into the tunnel and Luigi quickly agrees.
Meanwhile, Yoshi overhears the two brothers talking and decides he wants to follow them. He decides to get a head start, so he goes to the tunnel and wanders inside, unforunately he gets caught in a trap.

| Review by Soul2Limbo | Hmmm.... now this was an interesting hack.
~GAMEPLAY~
A lot of good stuff here. To start, this hack contains some very, VERY sneaky puzzles (this is a good thing). The castle level at the end contained a cool switcharoo element that made the level very enjoyable, and your use of the layers for your custom boss was quite epic. I also appreciate your use of layers once again in the Fog Hills level which added a unique take on level design. Another strong point about the gameplay is the alternate route to the castle that contains several levels which are also fun to play. If I had to knock off a point somewhere, it would be for the frustrating puzzle-level known as Midnight High (no offense, but this level is EVIL). For example, even if I tried to reset the level by going through the pipe, the coins I collected would be gone forever - meaning the P-Switch I hit would be pointless since the coins that turn into blocks to get to the top are gone... forever. The Castle Courtyard was also annoying since it's really a trial and error level... but whatever. Oh yeah, there's an endless bonus game level to the left of the pipe on the overworld... wtf? Those few minor bugs aside, I would give your level design a 9/10... mainly because the boss battle is actually pretty difficult for a first boss, and the levels on the alternate path felt like they may belong in a later world (solely based on difficulty).
~GRAPHICS~
My favorite part in any hack... and this hack delivers some very cool gimmicks. The most notable graphic I liked in this hack was located in the Fog Hills board. As I mentioned earlier, you made a superb use of layer 2 to create a very effective fog effect that brought the level to life. I also like your custom sunset BG as well as the GFX in Yoshi's Flatlands and the Castle Courtyard. The secret temple had a sleek green palette that fit the level nicely. You used the SMW Redrawn GFX in places where there were no custom GFX, so it was a "refreshing" hack overall in the GFX/ExGFX department. I felt that the title screen was a little lacking, and that the overworld could use some more detail. Overall, I'd say the graphics deserve a 9/10.
~MUSIC~
I hate the original SMW soundtrack. I've heard it so many times that it makes me want to take a shot of whiskey every time I hear it just so my ears can relax... I'm not saying the music is bad, it's just OVERUSED & ABUSED. However, the music does seem to fit the the hack so it actually helps the hack flow smoothly. Some custom music though would really give this hack some extra points, because several selections from that custom music section would fit this hack perfectly. Eh, I always give the original SMW music a 7/10, but I'll score higher if you release your next demo with new music.
~STORY~
Your story is fitting for the hack you're developing... kinda mysterious & I like that. Cutscenes in the hack really brought the levels together, so the story to this hack is fun to play along to. Nothing else to say... 10/10
~REPLAY VALUE~
Yes, this hack has got a lot of substance to its design, and it takes several play-throughs to really appreciate the work put into this hack. The replay value is good, but not as good as it could be when you release more content for us to play... 8/10 (I know the difficult puzzles will turn some people away from the hack)
~~OVERALL~~
This hack was very entertaining and contains some very well thought out level design & graphical elements. The cutscenes also added a little spice to the hack. After averaging your score, it comes out to an 8.6, and rounding up that gives you a 9/10.
Keep up the good work & I look forward to the next release! | | Posted by: Soul2Limbo - 2009-02-15 09:29:09 PM |

| Review by Mastermind | First off: Pretty good work you did do with this!
Graphics: The first thing you recognise when you begin to play this hack is, that all the graphics are altered (even the sprites of mario and yoshi). I really loved that style and was pleased to see that there were no graphical glitches neither in the levels nor in the also altered overworld.
Leveldesign: At the beginning you might think, that it is a beginner friendly and totally easy hack, but you're wrong. For instance there is this extremely high mountain level you have to climb up and always carry springboards and p-switches with you, which you will need later on and if you make a mistake you have to begin at the bottom again.
Music: There's no custom music in it, but since this hack is, as I think, all about graphics it doesn't really matter.
Story: You took the effort to include an interesting plot not about princess-kidnapping which I really appreciate.
Originality: There are two points I'd like to mention here. First is the self-made bossfight which is hard and, as you mentioned in the description, really unique. The second thing is the castle, in which you always have to switch from an ice- to a lava-world to proceed (eg. lava turns to water through which you have to swim or solid ice blocks turn to destructible normal blocks).
All in all this is a really fine hack with a couple of good ideas and a fascinating graphic style. So I rate it 10 of 10 points and it's a pity that this hack is only a (relatively short) demo! | | Posted by: Mastermind - 2008-12-23 11:28:07 AM |
