| Review by ChaoticFox | Where to begin...
I was very impressed with this hack! Short, but sweet with a fresh taste of new graphics. There were parts that "wowed" me in this hack, and parts that you might consider fixing. For one thing, the level design was great! A couple flaws that I found in it though were in the "Goomba Road(?)" level and the "Jungle Fever" level. In the level to the left of YOSHI'S HOUSE, the bonus cave zone had a problem with the Wiggler. Apparently, the Wiggler gets stuck on the left corner of that row of ? blocks he walks on, going round and round in a circle that leads to nowhere. In the "Jungle Fever" level, at the part where you need the spring, you can actually just take it up to where you can see the Chain Chomp, and use it there, and just skip over that whole temple region. Maybe you can change the property of the top row to lava, or something. It'll give the player the message that they aren't supposed to be there.
Some things that impressed me with this hack was the use of ExGFX. Although you stayed away from custom backgrounds in the earlier levels, the graphics got better and better as you progressed through the game. I also noticed that you used a background from "Demo World" in your "Jungle Fever" level. You're use of custom sprites was the real part that made the whole game feel right. The best part about the hack was the gimicks that you included into the levels, like racing against Koopa D. Quick (something you would see in Mario's newer 3D adventures) or putting a spin on the Iggy battle by changing the graphics of the Mouser sprite. (That's right; I noticed!) What kind of threw me off was the fact that you neglected to change some of the messages in the levels. (Like Yoshi's rescue message, or the completion of Castle #1.) I also saw that you used FoSoYa's Screen Scrolling Pipes. I honestly have no idea how those things work, so if you would be kind of enough to inform me of how the tiles should be arranged, that would be great!
All in all, this is one of the funnest hacks I have ever played, and I'm looking forward to the next demo! | | Posted by: ChaoticFox - 2008-12-22 04:41:57 PM |

| Review by andy_k_250 | | Well, I just finished moderating this hack and I can honestly say that I was pretty impressed. Though the current title leaves a bit to be desired, the rest of this hack really delivers. In general, it's nice to look at, which is always good. Palettes go really well together, and none of the graphics really clash with one another. Many of the graphcis appear to be original or rarely used, so it is a breath of fresh air. Meanwhile, the levels have a classic feel to them while also feeling fresh. Use of enemies seems appropriate for each level's theme and varies from level to level. There are lots of nice touches here and there too, like the race with Koopa The Quick or the first Koopaling battle. The only thing I would watch for in the future is keeping an eye on enemy-induced slowdown. Apart from that, this is one to watch - keep up the good work! | Posted by: andy_k_250 - 2008-12-21 11:10:30 PM |
