| Review by plane852 | It's been just over a year since I last visited this site, but now that I've had more time to play ROM hacks, I figured I'd submit my first review. I'm just going down the list, starting with this one.
Hack: "Super" Amazing World

Detailed Review
Story: When I play ROM hacks, I look for a story behind all the worlds and levels. It really adds substance to the game, and makes it more than just a whole bunch of levels I have to beat to finish the game. This hack lacked any hint of a story, unfortunately. If you ever get around to finishing this hack in the future, I'd recommend adding one to add value to your game. Rating: 0/10
Overworld: I normally only glance over an overworld when I play, so if there were any small glitches with pixels or minor path problems, I wouldn't notice. Two things I didn't much care for, though: the cave door smack dab in the middle of a cliff, I wasn't a huge fan of. Your color scheme for the cave overworld also seemed a bit out of place. Although there's probably not much you can do with the door, I'd recommend changing your cave colors to something a bit more suitable. Rating: 7/10
Music: The music for your levels were very fitting, at least I thought so. Your selection for the switch palaces didn't quite sit well with me, however. Your overworld music started off on the wrong foot, as I didn't exactly feel the tunes fit well with the initial screen or the cave area. The area with the castle, however, fit the mood perfectly. Rating: 5/10
Level Design: Yow. What do I say here? There were quite a few things I had a problem with regarding level design, so I'll just tackle them separately.
1) Sticky Walls: A very interesting gimmick to your first level. Not so much for the second level. Even less so with the third level. I don't mind the use of a gimmick for one level, but making an entire world based around it makes a gimmick more frustrating than memorable.
2) Difficulty Curve: The difficulty, assuming you played the levels in the order I did, was almost erratic. Sticky Hills 1 was fairly easy. The Yellow Switch Palace was a puzzle level (sort of, at least), which was also easy...except that the extremely small fences to jump on were nearly impossible to grab a hold of. I spent at least 2 minutes trying to get up that part. Sticky Hills 2 was almost as easy as your first level, minus the little plants spitting fireballs (sorry, not big on enemy names) placed in the most inconvenient spots. And finally, your castle, which took the difficulty and sent it through the roof. I would suggest taming that level in order to match the easiness of the other two levels, or vice versa.
3) Lack of Power-ups: Maybe I just stink at playing SMW, but the amount of save states I used in this hack was crazy. I kept realizing that I wouldn't be using them so much if there was actually a mushroom or a fire flower somewhere in the game. I didn't find one.
The overall design of levels was well done, but the overall difficulty curve and overuse of the wall jump, as well as the total lack of power-ups, has me reducing your score. Rating: 4/10
Other: The Mouser battle I found to be a pleasant surprise. Although he did most of the work killing himself, and not me. Points: +3
Final Word: Overall, a lot of potential with this hack. There were quite a lot of things I enjoyed, such as some of your music selections, but the big one, the level design, is what I think needs a bit of work.
My overall score is the total of the scores of four elements: story, overworld, music, and level design. Any other notable things, I add bonus points to. The total score is out of 40 points.

Story - 0/10
No story given.
Graphics - 5/10
Vanilla with not too great palettes. I really didn't like most of the palettes in this hack, especially the Sticky Cave area. The castle was missing its flame generator sprite.
Music - 4/10
I really love SMB3 music but the choices seemed really out of place and unsuited to the areas such as the intro and the cave area. Also I couldn't get passed the intro in BSNES and it seems the music was the problem as it was mute which is odd considering I could load my save and play most of the levels afterwards.
Overworld - 4/10
I thought it was the strong point of the hack until I had a scroll around. It's well designed and looks good at a glance except it is actually littered with perspective errors and cutoff. Also why does Mario keep walking on the level tiles?
Gameplay - 6/10
Mediocre at best in my opinion. The wall jump ability seemed good at first but then you started limiting the walls it could be used on and that often resulted in my death. The Sticky Secret and the Mouser's Castle(except the boss) were by far, a lot harder than the rest of the other levels and I felt the difficulty was ramped up far too high for World 1, especially since there were no power-ups at all in this hack. The Sticky Secret may be defended by saying it's a secret optional level but you actually needed to beat it to win.
Design - 7/10
I thought the levels were well made and I had fun playing them and getting the Dragon Coins and Secret Exits but it was inconsistency that brought the score down. From easy->hard in one level isn't really a good thing for World 1. I really wanted this hack to do good but it seems to fall short at every opportunity. I just waited out the Mouser fight and he killed himself. Also the slopes were really messed up in Sticky Cave.
Replay Value - 3/10
Getting the Dragon Coins and Secret exits are the only incentives to play again. +1 for each.
Extra Points:
+1 for SMB3 music
+1 for bonus rooms
+1 for clever puzzle palaces
Total: 32/70 or 4.6/10
Rating: 5/10

| Review by Master101jie | Overworld: 4/5 The overworld looks very good but there are a couple minor issues. First off, in the cave Mario keeps on walking on the level instead of facing forward and stopping. The palette in the cave looks a little ugly and the music doesn't fit very well. There is also a ghost by itself in the ocean to the far right (barely noticeable though).
Levels: 12/15 The levels had pretty good level design. There were some difficult parts and nothing was really 'boring'. There were a few glitches with the wall jump walls though. The bonus rooms were easy to die in and kind of pointless.
Custom Stuff: 4/5 I can easily tell that you used Super Mario Bros. 3 All-Stars music. It was an okay selection for the most part, but I much would have rather you used some other music to make it more interesting. The wall jumping blocks looked very good and were very fun to mess around with! As mentioned before, there were some minor glitches with them at some points. The mouser battle was good and custom bosses are great fun.
Other Notes: In some of the levels you can go over the viewable screen and still control Mario off-screen. I'm guessing that you used vertical scroll only when running, flying, climbing, etc. You should have used the Free scroll at will (from a player's viewpoint).

| Review by mikey1105 | Map: love the world map and it's decoration. You seem to know how to make a map. 9/10
Levels: The levels were nicely designed but I think you may have been a little mean with the time on the yellow challenge. In the yellow challenge using very small climbing nets is very bad so I would think about taking that out... Score: 8/10
Custom Content: (Music): I like the SMB3 custom music but I think you went a little overboard. The P-Switch music replacement was very neat and something I like seeing 8/10 (GFX) There wasn't very much custom GFX. Most of the stuff was just a small edit (Turn/flip) of the original tile. 6/10 (Sprites) I like the mouser sprite, even though I have seen it before and all you did was get different GFX for it. That was the only custom sprite I noticed... 5/10
To improve: If I wanted to improve this I would take out the really small climbing tiles in the yellow challenge, or just make them a bit bigger. I would also Increase the time by maybe about 50 sec, but that is just a small suggestion.
Overall rating: 8/10! B. I like this hack! If you want me to do this on camera I would be honored. Just send me a PM. | | Posted by: mikey1105 - 2009-12-19 03:55:13 AM |

| Review by thewizard | Overworld: 4/5 It was nice to see something different and customized, but Mario always kept walking while standing on the level tiles, it happened on every level tile for me. The overworld music wasn't that good, it didn't really fit.
Difficulty: 17/20 It was very fun and nothing was too hard. I didn't need save states until the castle, THAT was hard. I thought it was interesting how the title screen was the castle. All the levels were fun and difficult enough to keep me interested, I loved trying to get to the secrets, it took a little thinking, it wasn't too simple.
Custom Stuff: 12/15 Loved Mouser. The custom tiles and bonus levels were very fun and challenging, I only didn't give you a 15/15 because of the music. The music was alright but it could have been better.
Levels: 9/10 Very fun levels, interesting and hard because I never once got a mushroom or anything so it kept it very interesting and gave it a challenge. I died a LOT in the cave but I kept getting so many extra lives I ended up leaving with more than I started with, and I've got a weak spot for getting a ton of extra lives, it's my favorite part.
