Description: A vanilla hack i started to work on from November 2009. I've been slowly working on it but it's coming out great in my opinion. For those vanilla hack lovers out there, give this a try.

I just hope your eyes don't get seared for looking at golden cave's palletes.

-PLOT-
Pretty simple, Mario gets challenged by Bowser to an epic final battle, but first, you must help Mario to go through 3(?) worlds full of danger and whatnot.

Let me begin by saying that this demo is good, and that you've done some neat work.

The story here is simple, and even though it can be described as a bit cliche, it doesn't take away any of hack's pros. I think that you could put some more emphasis on the plot and try to expand it a bit; How about a message block with some more info regarding the story, or even messages from Bowser himself? It would help player to feel that the plot wasn't made "just to be there", but that it actually has a big purpose ;)

Level design was very good, I like the fact that there are multiple ways to get around the level (by that I mean that you can take the path at the bottom, at the top etc.), thus giving this one a pretty stron non-linear feel, which is always a plus in my book. The hack was fun, by being a little tough at the same time. None of the levels felt repetitive, each one having something else to offer, whether it is to be a new gimmick or palette. Which brings us to...

Graphics. As far as I can tell they were good. I love the decorations made with walk-through ledges in most of the levels; I think they are my favourite style of decorating vanilla levels. The palettes in the Golden Cave weren't that bad, actually, and they didn't give me any kind of huge headache (maybe a small one... =P). Oh, and I'd like to point out that before every level there is a minor problem with a colour of M in "MARIO START!". This is a minor and frequent glitch, which can be quickly helped by downloading and applying the "SMW-Fix" patch by MrCheeze, which can be downloaded in the 'Patches' section of this site. This hack is purely vanilla, so music also was in-game, and as far as I can tell, every level or its part had a fitting tune.

Overworld wasn't bad, and I liked overall simplicity of it. As you are planning to have only 3 worlds, you're not gonna use the main OW map, are you? If not, that's the shame, because while having only submaps is definitely pretty nice, a big map has its benefits too, main one being its size. But what have you done with the submaps as of now, I do like. Maybe I would recommend putting something else in the valley in the cave (2nd submap) than just a row of identical blocks.

Overall, I liked this demo. It was fun, albeit a bit short. Hope to see the final version/next demo be as fun as this one! Overall grade: 7/10. Nice work, keep it up!
