| Tip: Bad things to do in the title demo: Enter a door or a pipe, activate a P-switch or a star, complete the level, hit a message block, or die. These will either glitch the music, or force the player into an endlessly looping title level until they reset the game. |

| Review by A-l-e-x-99 | (sigh) What was wrong with this hack? I think it might be easier for me to point out what WASN'T wrong with it!
* The lack of status bar, P-Switch, Star, death, and "level clear" music made this hack feel really bland and featureless.
* Some music was obnoxious, annoying, and TOO LOUD!!!
* I had to fight a few bosses with slowdown because they were too hard!
* Repetitive themes.
* Clashing music (especially on the beach levels, which had desert music).
* Bad background for the beach levels; should've instead had a desert background.
* Two bosses were plagiarized from Brutal Mario. Two of the WORST bosses at that!!! Why couldn't we instead have the Kirby fight that acted like Super Mario World 2's final boss fight!?!
* The final castle seemed plagiarized from New Super Mario Bros.'s final castle.
* Unnecessary wavy effect for the cloud world and the desert world, as well as some level backgrounds. It made me seasick!!! There's a reason why that "HDMA toolkit" hasn't caught on.
* Some later levels had a black line on the right side of the screen for some odd reason.
* Occasional glitched Charging Chuck graphics.
* Lava cave levels in the final world had a clashing background: bright pink on a dark cave.
* No apparent option to skip cutscenes.
* "Toad Start" text looked just a bit creepy.
* The sky world was too easy due to the increased jump height.
Sorry, but I'm afraid I'm gonna have to give this one a 5/10. | | Posted by: A-l-e-x-99 - 2010-09-29 06:37:46 PM |

| Review by DragonLX | I remember watching a video of this hack some time ago on Youtube and was fascinated with it so I had high expectations for this hack, but the level design was dissapointing and that killed most of the appeal Toad's World had; It bored me and I stopped playing in the middle of the hack, but I played long enough to give a decent review.
The levels were a tad repeatitive and lacked variety, in the sense of 'this feels like one very long level'. As far as graphics go they were top-notch. The use of multiple backgrounds and gradients give a very profesional look. I absolutely loved the graphics you used for the first castle and Spooky Road. Also, the overworld looked very nice but the lacks of events was a bit dissapointing. The music used in this hack is of excellent quality, but sometimes it didn't 'fit' the levels. For example in the first castle a ritual-esque music plays and didn't feel 'right' for a castle. Another thing that seems odd to me is that there is no music for the end of level sequence, after pressing a p-switch and while dying, and it removed some of the appeal of the hack because it felt... dead (I can't really explain it better). Finally, the ASM: awesome. From the HDMA effects to the custom bosses; amazing.
All in all Toad's World is a decent hack. It has amazing graphics and music, but a mediocre level design, and level design is what makes or breaks a hack. | | Posted by: DragonLX - 2010-09-26 04:56:00 PM |

| Review by nnn | Well i have to say that i was suprised with this hack. I really like the graphic style of it, and also i was surprised by the ASM stuff you used (some staff were taken for Brutal Mario). I like the plot, however at least there aren't any good conclusion of the story. On the other hand i was a little dissapointed with the level design. It reminds me the old hack of ghettoyouth "Bowser's Return" (which has great graphic style but bland level design). I found the level design in this hack a little repetitive and the sense of jump here, jump there...in some levels. Also some levels are too short, and the goal point question sphere isn't good to finish the levels. You could try to use the level ender block instead to make the end of the levels better.
I found good the levels that use ASM stuff beacuse you put in those something different and the graphic style make your levels looks better.
Level Design: 7/10 Good, but not great. Try to change some of your level design style.
OW: 9/10. I like it a lot.
Music: 10/10. Good choice of musics.
Graphics: 10/10. Amazing!
Plot: 7/10. Good, sweet, but i want to listen more...
Stuff: 9/10
Replay Value: 7/10
Overall= 8,40 rounded to 8/10. Also i voted for featured this hack for all good things it has. | | Posted by: nnn - 2010-09-24 06:51:07 PM |

| Review by Q-bee | (Attention 1: This review contains spoilers.)
(Attention 2: This is my first review ever, people may not agree with my opinion. Also they don't have to.)
(Attention 3: This review was edited due to the hack updates.)
Your hack contains lots of wonderful stuff, but on the other hand, it has various weak points, too. Let's point all out:
Graphics:9/10 (+)
-I loved Toad's graphics, and all the ripped and custom graphics. You did a very well use of them in some stripe images and multilayer scrolling BG's, but in some levels I haven't liked the way you used them. Examples are some mixes that doesn't fit with the style of your hack. Example: one time you're using SMWRedrawn pipes, and other time, the original SMW ones.
Also, munchers' palettes look ugly in levels like the first one, "Green Fields 1".
Floating munchers were fixed. Thank goodness.
ASM:8/10
-There are various things that pick up anybody that plays your hack, especially HDMA gradients and effects, and various stuff that enhanced the gameplay a lot, like the Pause Menu, etc. But I particularly don't like the white gradients inside "Castles 1 & 2", and the wave effect on the cloud submap.
Music:5/10
-Major part of the music was nicely ported. I can say they're perfect, and the sample replacements on some enhanced them amazingly. The other half seems sloppy.
And in general, the musics are way too short in some levels. This annoyed me constantly.
Level design:4/10
-The major part of levels are too short, and sometimes they become repetitive.
And various levels can be easily broken by flying with a cape. Yes, there's a level that provides a cape to the player! But I don't know if that was intentional, because the flying Toad GFX was drawn, too.
What made me really crazy was the fact of some levels seem to be like remakes from other games, for example, there's one part of "Castle #6" very similar to NSMB's "W1-Fortress", and 70% of your "Last Castle" remembers NSMB's "W8-Bowser's Castle". They're like SMW's blatant level edits. I know that you just tried to use them just as a base, but they're extremely similar.
And also, "Old Factory" has cutoff in the start.
But at least, all your levels are good enough for new/less experienced SMW players.
And I just loved "Hive of Lava", it's the level with best music with the most beautiful graphics of the hack.
Oh, yeah, you fixed the exits of "Snow Fields 2", and the castles and fortresses midway points were removed, to prevent malfunctions.
Overworld:4/10
-I know the overworld has its cool effects, but in some parts, you can't know or remember if you have already unlocked certain paths to keep moving.
And the level "Spooky Road" appear on the map as a ghost house, but it's not a ghost "house" level. For me that doesn't make any sense.
Well, at least you fixed the tile of "Secret Palace" level.
Plot:4/10 (+)
-It's a very simple plot, but it has its contents. Well, now it contains a conclusion, also simple, but makes the story more worthy. Now the player have a "reward" in the end, which is that conclusion.
Replay Value:7/10 (+)
-All custom things pick up the player to play your hack various times, even me, that haven't liked it too much. It addicts the player!
Overall:41/70 -> 5.8/10.0 -> 6/10 (+)
-I expected better. Yeah, it's a very good hack, but I'm not satisfied. But I think this hack is a must play for players that are new to SMW playing and hacking, due to the difficulty curve and all good things pointed here. | Posted by: Q-bee - 2010-09-24 12:56:26 PM |

| Review by Nintendude88 | Music 8.5/10- The music in this hack is well done! There are a couple of music tracks that I never heard in any other hack. I also liked how some music tracks used custom samples. However, there are a couple
of tracks that seemed to go offbeat though.
Graphics 10/10-I liked how Toad looked, and the Backgrounds/Foregrounds are amazing. It looked like I was playing
a DS game in a way. I liked how HDMA is used in this hack.
Overworld 10/10-I like the overworld design and that some sub-overworlds uses HDMA. Everything else is designed well.
Level Design- 8/10 This is where it could have been better. The levels weren't hard but the designs some of the levels made them
seem straightforward. However, I liked how each boss battle was unique even though there were two bosses that I
have seen before...
Overall, this is a good hack but things could have been better. In my opinion, it seemed straightforward but it's not bad to
play. Kudos to you Ice Man (and others who helped) for making this!
