| Tip: When determining a time limit, remember that players won't be as familiar with the level as you are. If you normally complete the level with the timer around 100, others might run out of time on their first try. |

| Review by Khnum666 | Graphics - 3/5
Okay so it was Vanilla, I don't mind that. I mainly search for hacks with good design, not fancy graphics and steroid-injected features. It's always a plus though. The only annoyance was the Hurt Blocks in Lemmy's Castle. It seemed odd to have them above lava. Why not just leave the lava there for insta-kill or replace both with spikes for damage?
Also the silhouetted enemies was really frustrating but didn't mark you down.
Custom Stuff - 0/5
The Hurt Blocks really served no purpose and could have easily been replicated with spikes.
Music - 5/5
I can't mark down for original SMW music.
Palettes - 2/5
The main problem I had with this hack was the palettes. They were mostly awful. Red Sun Valley really stood out as the shining example. of a good palette.
Story - 5/10
Yer basic Peach is kidnapped blah blah blah storyline.
Fun - 3/10
The hack consisted mainly of several screens of similar concepts pasted 3-4 times. Not very fun and most of the levels were lacking in coins and ?-Boxes. You don't just have to use them for Power-Ups you know.
Overworld - 5/10
Very bland, boring and squarey. Perspective + palette errors (rocks). Still, it was a functional overworld and that's half the marks.
Level Design - 5/15
Very sloppy and boring. It began to pick up after the second castle and the next few levels were actually quite good but then it just plummeted again. Also I was able to get stuck in quite a few places on the scrolling levels. That's not fair to the player. Try to work in an alternate escape route to avoid unforeseeable deaths for the player.
Replay Value - 0/3
I would not play this again as there is no incentive to go back to look for secrets, bonuses etc.
Difficulty - 4/7
This is the curve, not how difficult the hack is. It was very inconsistent in difficulty. Almost as inconsistent as I am with my tenses. The Boo's house and Bullet Hills were entirely unfair and the difficulty spiked for no reason.
Remaining Points: 10/25
+5 - You managed to keep me playing to the end despite the errors.
+3 - No glitched graphics I could see.
+2 - Passable grammar.
tl;dr
FINAL GRADE - 42/100
Barely passable. 4/10. Needs better level design, palettes and difficulty curve. | | Posted by: Khnum666 - 2010-10-10 09:48:03 PM |

| Review by exit1337 | Unfortunately you did not fix all the errors Systemkrash pointed out in the removal log, but there are not enough mistakes to deny this one again.
The level design was very linear but you at least had many different ideas in your levels and there is variety in them, especially when you changed the palletes in order to create different atmospheres. Speaking of which, the majority of the palettes were fine, some very good and some were meh-ish, but you failed at some palettes, too, making them "eye-soaring" as it is often applicably called.
There were a countable number of mistakes, like for example a wrong tile or a Dragon Coin on a subscreen boundary (in the level before the confrontation) which you should have fixed, but all in all this shall be accepted as you clearly put enough effort into it.
You might want to use custom music/blocks/sprites and so on, and you should use more non-linear, different ways, bonus rooms in your levels, so that the whole hack gets more appeal for players. A new story would be cool, too.
I was unsure between rating this 3 or 4, but the fact that you did not fix up all errors Systemkrash pointed out, this gets a 3.
Last advice: You might want to look into our Palettes Thread to see a lot of great palettes for different atmospheres. | Posted by: exit1337 - 2010-10-08 07:24:48 AM |
