Description: I present to you a different kind of SMW hack.

Recently I came across the Donkey Kong Country Competition Cartridge and played it for the first time. I really liked the different way they approached the game, and it got me thinking about what it would look like if this format were applied to SMW. So I decided to go ahead and make it happen and this is the result.

If you are not familiar with the DKC Competition Cartridge, here is some background information:
http://www.snescentral.com/article.php?id=0910

Essentially this hack is a hand-picked arrangement of the original SMW stages with the objective to score as many points as possible in the allotted time. The scoring system has been revamped to more resemble the system used in the DKC Competition Cartridge. It's a fresh take on the game we all know and love.

Hope you guys enjoy and thanks for playing!

Whoa, this hack... has sure a lot of potential. A great concept, which is well executed. It makes SMW more arcade'ish, therefore more challenge and replayability. Thanks to the time limit, another score system and levels which are upcoming next - without the use of the world map.

I won't judge sound, graphic and level design because these aspects are solely based on SMW.

Some people will say gameplay is enhanced, someone else will say it's just different. One thing is sure - there's no place for casual. If people are bored with original SMW, because how much have replayed this game or levels are just too easy, they definitely should take a look at this.

I mentioned before it has a lot of potential, so it could be improved. Maybe too bad highscore is not shown... but c'mon, it's not hard to save your best score in text file, isn't it?
Another thing, which should be changed is probably how this hack represents after the time is out - ending up in 'bonus level' is the least impressive aspect of this hack. I hope that next version will be released with some improvements, if possible.

I personally recommend it to everyone; if you try it, you surely won't play it less than 3-5 times!

This is a very interesting hack!

I like the idea of the time limit and score. It gives a good sense of competition. It's also the most creative way to use the original levels I've seen to date.

If, however, you continued working on this, I would recommend a two-player mode. It would increase the level of competition, and you could see whether or not you were winning.

Overall, I rate this 8.5/10. Definitely worth playing. I would recommend this hack to almost anyone.

This is certainly one creative use of the original SMW levels. In this hack you are given 6 minutes to score as many points as possible. You score different values depending on what actions you do. Collecting Coins gives you one point each, killing an enemy, collecting a Yoshi Coin or a Power-up gives you 10 points and getting a 1UP from either a Green Mushroom or 100 Coins gives you 50 points. You can also get bonus points depending on how high you hit the goal tape. I'm not sure what the values are but I think I got 300 points for 40 Stars. Activating Secret Exits also earn you points too. After the time runs out you are teleported to what looks like the Bonus Game level where you can see the score you achieved. Going down the pipe in front of you will take you back to the title screen where you can then try again to see if you can beat your score.
This would definitely be an excellent hack for speed-runners whether it be TAS or non-TAS. It could also be useful for speed-run or score contests.

All in all, this is an original concept executed very well. I recommend everyone gives this a go!

this was an interesting idea. you don't see people doing too much with the original SMW levels other than translations really. so i gave this a download and man was it a short experience. i'm sure i missed more levels/areas but with the time allotted it was hard to get far. there's lots of thinking you gotta do. do you rack up points in one area? or do you run through all areas to reach the end? it's all about strategy. the ending is pretty anit-climactic though. just a pipe that restarts the game again. at least that's all i got out of it. this was a well executed original idea i've never seen attempted before. so i give you props for doing something different. this is a great download for people who want to make videos of hack playthroughs/tool assisted speedruns. i definitely recommend it. :)
