I've always wanted a tool I could get really creative with, and SMW Hacking is pretty much perfect for me. Not to mention it's very user-friendly and the great community.
That and getting praise / positive feedback. It feels great.

hahahahhaa

I like seeing people LP my stuff. Seeing people having fun with what I created gives a nice euphoric feeling.

I like smwhacking because it gives you a small perspective on how gaming development works and it gives you a chance to meet awesome people where you can gain more knowledge on a feature or a op-code you never knew existed! If it weren't for my courage to strive on this site and make Mario hacks, i wouldn't be learning code at all! now im learning c# and c++!

To be 100% frank: Lunar Magic's user friendliness.

There are lots of things I don't like about Lunar Magic (closed source cough cough), but I cannot deny just how many people it's brought into SMW hacking who would've been discouraged by all the tedious work associated with most game hacking. Me included.

I don't know about development, because usually you don't have an entire game with graphics and music already made for you, but SMW hacking does teach you (if you do it properly) a lot about designing games. Interesting stuff, in my opinion.
Watching Let's Play videos of hacks. For some reason I enjoy this more than playing hacks myself.

As far as creating my own hack goes, like others have said it's a combination of the creativity and looking back over your own completed levels with satisfaction.

Marios Adventure in the Dreamworld - My first hack.

The excitement when I have enough content to start a WIP thread. It didn't happen often, but when it did, I was super excited. But then the hack always gets cancelled shortly after.

I also love to fine-tune everything I do. Most hack attempts I did started with a remake of the second level I ever made (the first being a vertical doomship level with line-guides, not exactly level 1 material) and stopped after that. I don't care, I just love retouching that one level over and over.

I dunno what's the feeling of completing a hack, but it must be awesome. Getting this satisfaction is the only reason why I keep hacking.

I'm gonna get there one day. Sure, this site will probably be dead by that time, but heh, it's DONE!
Being able to find ways to help people and finding ways to be completely satisfied whenever I finish something that I started.

Staying up-to-date with the latest tools and asm patches.
Not sure if this has been said yet or anything, but the thing I like about it is the fact that it's SSSSOOOOO easy to do and almost anything in it can be edited! And even if you're not experienced it can still be fun and easy for you because even editing only levels is a piece of cake. ;)

Also, it's a pre-made enine so you don't have to worry about coding in all the player features and whatnot. -_-;
