Super Mute Word: Episode 2 - "New Levels"

Standard

So I decided to make a new thread for my hack "Super Mute World" in order to keep things organized. I wanted to wait till I had more progress from the new ROM to show off before I made any updates and now that I've made quite a bit of progress I figured it's about time to show off what I have so far. For those who are seeing this hack for the first time, Super Mute World is a sequel to Super Mario World: The After Years. and has been in development for a long time now. I made a lot of progress on it originally but I decided to restart the hack due to it becoming very disorganized making it difficult to work on and loss of inspiration which lead to me making a new ROM as well as taking the hack in a new direction.

More Information

World Progress

World 1 - Construction Land (Levels Completed 9/10)
World 2A - Canyon/Desert (Levels Completed 5/8)
World 2B - Water (Levels Completed 7/9)
World 3 - Oriental/Haunted (Levels Completed 7/12)
World 4 - The Underworld (Levels Completed 3/6)
World 5A - Toy Lands (Levels Completed 2/9)
World 5B - Casino Lands (Levels Completed 2/8)
World 6 - Volcanic Mines (Levels Completed 2/10)
World 7 - Alice's Space Station

Level Completion 38/79 (Estimated amount.)

Will fill these in as soon as I figure out how far I'm into each world. Also keeping the themes of the final world and the special world a secret for now.

Plans for the hack. (Old & New)

1. The hack will be around the same length of the prequel except there's a lot of optional content this time around making the hack more non linear. Also the levels will have more exploration to them and bonuses added in though not as explore based compared to the old ROM. (Also a good amount of the levels from the old ROM will be transferred or remade in the new ROM.)

2. The world's have gone back to the usual format though there are two worlds that have split paths. (The dialogue might also change depending on which world you completed first.) Also there are a few optional worlds as well as world's that can be accessed early though you might not to able to get far without doing certain events first.

3. The Super Metroid Health Patch will be used just like in the previous hack. This time around there might be some enemies that take more or less then the default damage which is 20 but there will be reserve tanks in the hack allowing you to take more damage as well. (Best of luck finding them!)

4. After receiving feedback/complaints about the prequel having too much dialogue and cut scenes I decided I will be dialing it down in this hack. There still may be some lengthy cut scenes for the important parts of the hack but you won't be overloaded.

Here are some more smaller details.

Yoshi will be a normal thing in the hack though he'll only be available in the level he's placed in as he can't be taken from level to level. He also won't always be required for the levels he's in. Yoshi/Dragon coins will also be more rewarding in the hack instead of just giving you a 1up. (Shall reveal as soon as it's implemented in the hack.) There also will be a recurring gimmick in the hack that's apart of the gameplay which I'll be showing off as soon as I get to a level that involves it.

With that large post out of the way it is time to show some screen shots and videos. I'll reveal the story as soon as I revise it some more.

1 - 1: Construction Zone (Video)

1-2: Broken Bridge Way

2-1: Carrot Lift Canyons (Video)

2-4: Bullet Bill Dunes (Video)

Well, this is all I have to show for now. I'll have more progress to show soon as the hack is progressing well at the moment. In the mean time comments and feedback are always appreciated as I'm interested in hearing your thoughts!

You've heard my opinions before, but I'm quite liking how everything looks so far. You always have this way of combining tilesets, which works effectively when they're the same style.

@Daizo Dee Von: Thanks a lot! Glad you think so as I try my hardest to combine tile sets without them clashing too much with one another.

I have a new level to show off that I finished not to long ago. This level is the third level of World 2A - Canyon/Desert and is the last level before transitioning into the desert part of the world. (Though it isn't exactly canyon themed as it's a cave level.) Anyways, here are some screen shots and a video.

2-3: Cave of the Dead (Video)

The level revolves around not only undead enemies but bones as well. There are a variety of undead enemies in this level (Not including press) as well as obstacles. It isn't too difficult of a level but it is somewhat tricky as there's plenty of obstacles that can lead to your death if your not careful. This is also around the point where the difficulty of the hack begins increasing just a little but not too much. Not really sure what else to say about the level as it's kind of straight forward and not too complex. I do recommend watching the level video to get a feel of how the level plays. (That and I'm not that good at taking screenshots haha.)

Well, I decided that I'm going to try to keep this thread updated at least once a week as so far that seems to be working out well for me. I have another new level to show off that I finished not too long ago. This level is one of the optional levels in the hack that doesn't necessarily fall into any world and can be played early throughout the game. It is a challenging level however...

Secret Level - Flaming Factory (Video)

Section 2

There are a lot of fire based enemies in this level. The first section of the level involves reflecting fire balls and a Sumo Bro's lighting generator. There's also kind of a fired based version of the Mega Mole which is faster and can't be jumped on due to being effected by the heat. (Finally figured out how to change it's palette.) The second section of the level is where things get a bit more dangerous as you're deeper into the flaming factory. There's even more lava involved in this section as well as fire pillars that rise out of them. Fire bars are also introduced in this and are placed in tricky spots. Overall the level is a good challenge though it isn't too difficult. It can mainly be just overwhelming as there's a lot to deal with. Anyways, this is all I have to show for now. As usual comments and feedback are always appreciated!

Kinda surprised this isn't getting as much comments at the last thread did. Must be that good.

Anyway, for actual feedback (or the best I can) is that in Flaming Factory, from the images, there are some objects with black outlines, and some do not. It isn't that big of a deal, since everything looks like objects you can stand on anyway, but it's very noticeable in the first set, middle top image.

Other than that though, I can't really suggest anything else other than what I suggested in the video a while ago.

I played the prequel, this isn't even out yet...

This is looking pretty good Evilguy. I should try out the prequel.

(Very late Replies I know... D= )

@Daizo Dee Von: Well, I get what you're saying but there's a lot of tile sets that do that. (Maybe too many to count.) Plus that's how it was in the original game I ripped it from.

@Lightvayne: Thanks! If you ever do decide to try out the prequel some day I'll just say it isn't perfect. I was still learning things around the time so there may be some questionable design choices here and there. (It mostly has a good reputation for the most part though.)

Well, it's kind of been a month since the last update...but this time I have a legitimate excuse! I haven't been feeling the greatest and also within the time of not updating I also managed to get a job. So yeah I've just been getting used to my schedule as well as finding time to update this thread. (Not use to not having free-time haha.) Personal stuff aside this hack has been progressing smoothly and a little faster than usual as I still have quite a bit of inspiration. As of now all the main levels for World 1, World 2A and 2B are completed so now I've moved onto working on levels for World 3....which so far has been the most difficult world to work on but it's still progressing. (Usually save the secret levels for later.) Anyways, I'll be showing not one but two levels off this time both from World 2A.

2-2: Windy Dry Valley

Well, just by the name of the level you can probably guess that the level revolves around wind as well as dry bones. In fact it's seeming like most of the levels in this world revolve around dry bones...Anyways, there are two wind based obstacles you'll be dealing with in this level. One is the wind that comes out of the pipes which pushes you upwards slowly and the other is the small tornadoes that give you a boost. The small tornadoes aren't always friendly however as sometimes they may be trying to screw you over so it's kind of important you pay attention to your surroundings. Overall the level is a bit tricky but not that difficult as it's only the second level of World 2.

2-5: The Lost Pyramid (Video)

There isn't all too much to explain in the first section of the level as the main level begins on section 2 of the level. There are the usual desert obstacles such pokeys and quicksand which isn't too harmful at this part of the level. There are also walking ninji's that like to hope out of turn blocks which can kind of get the jump on you if you're not prepared.

Section 2

So here is how it looks inside the pyramid where the main portion of the level takes place. Here there are even more obstacles to deal with such as piranha plants, quite a bit of line guides and harmful quicksand which have sand crocs from Cave Story waiting to jump out at you if you jump in it. (Will be making a warning sign for that.) There's also something I forgot to mention in the first post but there is a gimmick to this hack that is reoccurring which involves collecting red keys placed throughout the level. (Shown in the top right screen shot.) These are collectable though so you won't have to worry about item babysitting and the levels also won't involve too much backtracking. There will also be different ways to collect the keys such as mini puzzles or even kills rooms. (Or defeating mini bosses like shown in the middle screen shot on the bottom row.) Levels with the red keys don't have Yoshi Coins as they are actually reskins of Yoshi Coins.

Well, anyways that is all I have to show for now. In the next update we will be moving on to showing progress from World 2B which is water themed. So yeah I'll try to keep this thread updated every Sunday. In the meantime comments and feedback are always appreciated. (Really they are!)
