ExGFX Contest: Inquiry

Link Thread Closed
We're hosting an ExGFX contest some time soon (but it isn't locked on a date yet, just "soon"), but I'd like to hear a few suggestions from our userbase. Here's the previous contest for some information.

ExGFX Contest is a biannual contest (or so I'd think) which requires users to draw tilesets depending on the given theme. I think this is a good idea to "expand on something that we're missing" (like more tilesets for uncommon themes for example?).

Assuming we're not changing the type of this contest, the rules could stay the same, althought there might be a few tweaks.

Here are some ideas:
- If we're not trying anything new, the Background/Foreground ExGFX Contest would happen again.
- A Sprite ExGFX Contest, where users will reskin one (all would be too time consuming) sprite tileset into... something else?
- An Overworld ExGFX Contest, where users will draw a custom overworld that may or may not work with the vanilla overworld.

I don't know for how long I'll keep this thread up... maybe one week? Anyway, Discuss!
I guess the last one would help with the making of the inevitable OW contest for the inevitable release of the VLDC9 collaboration hack. So I guess I'd preffer the last one.
I play forum games and draw furries. I'm mostly active on Discord and Twitter.

I wouldn't mind being a judge if you're looking for one.

For the sprite stuff you could impose a certain theme and put on a limit (say one page) where you have to make snow-based enemies for example.
You could do something with color limits or weird background modes like mode 0.
A character drawing contest?

I was also thinking of some sort of contest where you have to SMW-ify a tileset from another game, say Super Metroid. Don't know how well that would work though.

I don't think forcing people to draw in a style different from their own would be much fun tbh. Also the ExGFX Contest is very creativity-intensive, so making everyone do a single style kinda kills the creativity aspect.

OW ExGFX Contest sounds interesting but that would require assembling an OW just for it, which might be way too much effort investment.

Sprite ExGFX Contest would be nice though. I like doing sprites and it'd be a great opportunity for some practice on actually drawing them, instead of redrawing them.
Man, I'm not good making Sprites and i have little knowledge about making OW GFX, and looks like it's gonna be a lot of work... but I would like to try them, no one never knows how good they are in some things until they try.
Made you look. Now Breath Manualy.

I'm totally seconding this. But what about the actual sprites? Could contestants redraw vanilla sprites (kinda like Hinalyte said), or maybe they could pick custom sprites from the site's section (or both if we end up drawing more than one)? Or do they just draw sprites that match the theme, without any need to make them work in game? The latter would be less tedious, but I think what matters the most about a sprite is its appearance in game, to see if the animations are smooth enough, if they loop properly, if they fit the sprite's behaviour, etc...

I personally prefer the idea of redrawing a sprite (custom or not) based on a specific theme. I said A sprite but I'm not sure about that. A contestant could either redraw several vanilla sprites, since a large part of them is basically 2 walking frames, or redraw one (or more if they're crazy) complex custom sprite with a bunch of frames. I think both should be left possible, but then a judge should remember to note the actual appearance of a sprite, not its asm quality... At that point I start to wonder if redrawing custom sprites should be allowed, but I wanna see what you guys have to say first.

Yes?? I think it's a pretty good idea too, but would you rather draw one as a sprite, or as one big drawing? I'm not sure myself..

This is pretty much what I think of an OW contest as well. Putting a good OW together isn't as simple as with a level (as of with a sprite, well it'd be all premade already so all what you'd have to do is drawing frames that match the original ones).
@Overworld contest: Making new graphics while still having it work with the original maps is really annoying to do. Making new, good looking maps would be too much work too, so I'd prefer making overworld graphics and making a sample map that won't be judged to show how they are be used. It wouldn't be annoying and would allow some creativity.

You could do something with color limits.
What about a layer 3 background contest?
I recommended this before. I still think it's a nice idea.

Couldn't it be included in a normal ExGFX contest?

Anyway, I'm all for having a Sprite ExGFX contest, being that I do this sort of thing all the time. Though, if an overworld ExGFX contest has to happen, don't restrict us by doing a select theme or having us do all 7 maps.

I would love to see an ExGFX contest based around sprite graphics. Ideally with a theme. So you'd say, have to make enemies match a specific theme. Like, make a bunch of graphics to fit enemies in a ghost house level. Or a beach level. Or a snow level. That kind of thing.

As for Mario's Nightmare Quest? Well, it's currently on Fusion Gameworks, ROM Hacking.net or the GCN at the moment.
@layer 3 contest, last contest we had the possibility to draw layer 3 graphics if we wanted to. I know you guys meant a contest focusing entirely on layer 3, but idk, personally I think the fact that we can already use it in the "main" contest is enough.

tfw I was about to post here then my internet decided not to work

Looks like people aren't in favor of the Overworld ExGFX Contest idea, and some people wanting to try out the Sprite ExGFX Contest. We'll see what happens in the upcoming contest!

Judging/Judges will be decided when this inquiry is done.

It sounds restrictive, but it's not like I'm against this idea. I just want something more "free" to draw.

This would be nice to see, but I'd think it's going to take a lot of time for most of the frames. If this were to happen, I'd like to think how this will be judged.

Too restrictive from just the colors themselves, but it might be worth a try, since I believe there can be great submissions given how "limited" layer 3 graphics are.

Keep those suggestions coming!
Layer 3 is limiting, but if you know how to work around the limitations, then you can have some pretty good stuff. Bonus points if you're using a sprite status bar of some sort.

What about it's the opposite, instead you say SMW-fy Super Metroid, you Super Metroidify SMW? It's kinda a good idea to me tbh

Closing this by tomorrow. If there's anything that you'd like to say/suggest, do it now!

I actually am a big fan of this idea... though, I think there should be a mix of 8 games that we choose from, and we can only choose two. Here's my suggestions:

Super Mario World (obviously)
Super Metroid
Donkey Kong Country (1/2/3)
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Castlevania 4
Metal Slug
Yoshi's Island
8-bit

Say I want to try to Yoshi's Island-ify Donkey Kong Country's cave graphics, or 8-bitify Super Metroid graphics... Of course, we can have an entirely different contest; it doesn't matter to me.
