Mario's Egg Hunt Peril - C3 Demo Available!

Hello again! I am proud to announce that I have a demo for my hack in time for C3! This demo will contain two worlds, and should give you guys a good idea of what the gameplay will be like. The demo contains 12 exits, and 1 secret exit. I'll have to say, I am super proud of what I have done, and I am really happy to share my works to all of you. I really am hopeful you guys will enjoy it. I've worked hard on this, and I hope I have met the standards.
I'd like to apologize that World 2's Castle wasn't even started and abruptly stops there. I wanted to get this demo out in-time.

Download C3 Demo

This game features collectathon-like gameplay, where the player is tasked to collect a specific amount of eggs to proceed to the next level. The levels are non-linear, and the can be traversed in any order to collect eggs. There is no time limit at all, so you can take your time. Although, be warned as the levels are short in size, they are little to no checkpoints. (Due to technical reasons. If the player respawned, I don't think the game can remember what eggs were collected before the player hit the checkpoint.)

And here is the overworld I am super proud of!

I hope you guys enjoy it. The ZIP file has the credits and a read me for you all to read. Any issues you guys spot, please let me know on this thread.

I will gladly accept criticism!
Eggcellent demo! Collecting the eggs was never an annoyance. They were very well placed for the beginning worlds. Can't wait for the full release.

Now onto the minor issues I discovered while playing the demo:
1) There's no midway point before the boss. Sure, the level & boss weren't difficult, but it would be nice if you added one before every boss. People will be thankful for this in later worlds when the eggs are trickier to get.
2) The palette of eggs coins in the silhouette water section could use some work.

Hi.
I don't see any reason why this post didn't get more attention until now.

I played the demo and I really like the idea. Also the Overworld and graphics look pretty good, that's also important for a good hack imo.
Music also matches to every level !

but there are also some things that I'd like to criticize:

First of all the difficulty didnt really change form World 1 to 2 - I hope you planned to make the upcoming worlds harder.
Also the Secret Exit was a bit annoying to find - the red koopas didn't fly in a synchronous way after I passed the spot one time.
And last I am sure that if the hack keeps going like that (even though it's a good idea) people might get bored really fast - I would suggest some levels with a different way of finding eggs (for example a Level with 5 eggs but they are hard to find, or a riding level (Lava skulls, skullkart or a flying platform) - surely you shouldn't miss any egg when playing this level ;-)

But in total you're doing great and I would like to see more in the future !
I just finished your demo and...
...it was okay, I guess?

There were a lot of minor bugs/issues that didn't influence the gameplay but still bothered me enough. Small Palette bugs and non-existent Events on the Overworld.

The Leveldesign was... acceptable? It felt very repetitive even though the locations changed from plains to forest to beach etc.

The Levels are very short too and contain only 3 main aspects.
- Collect 30 eggs
- Pass the blocks
- End

You could be able to spice this up varying the amount of eggs needed.
Maybe you could each level consist out of two different areas in which you have to find 60 eggs in total.

The Graphics are very nice! Especially the Backgrounds from 1-3 and 2-5.
The Overworld too is overall pretty good. The choice of the color on the hill where 1-3 and 1-4 are located is... weird? But nothing to really complain about. There is a lot of decoration all over the place making in look very nice and lively.

Concluding: 6.75/10 Points or something like that.

Apart from a few mistakes I've pointed out to you in private, I do believe that this is one of the few outstanding hacks on the site right now. The concept is very simple yet very well executed and I personally love collect-a-thon hacks, so good choice right there.

The idea of having just a normal level somewhere in the world brings more variety into gameplay. I hope you do more like this but with other objectives to achieve, perhaps having one special type of egg in every world that if you collect them all, a special level unlocks?

It's a very cute hack and great for beginners. I'd recommend this hack to anyone who wants to have an enjoyable, fun experience when playing videogames. Keep it up, man.
This is one of the best hacks I've ever played. It definitely left me hungry for more and I hope it gets completed.
One of the best things about this is the aesthetics. The music is really great (I stood in place for a minute just so I could listen to that castle theme remix) and the graphics are simply amazing. It didn't deviate from the more detailed style it uses. I also like the HDMA effects used, they're subtle but nice.
There are three things which struck me as odd. The first is one is probably unfixable, and it's how the game halts when it loads in music on the overworld. It's due to how AddmusicK handles things, so this is really just a minor nitpick. Aside from that, the HDMA gradient on the overworld affects the save prompt. There's probably a way to fix that (maybe by disabling the gradient when it's up). In the beginning of the castle, only half of an egg disappeared. I looked in Lunar Magic and eggs seem to just be coins. I don't think that might be the cause of the problem, but it really depends on how they're handled. I doubt it's an HDMA issue, seeing as HDMA gradients only affect the backdrop color register.
Overall, this is an awesome hack. Keep up the good work!
I was quite skeptical about the non-linear levels in this hack at first, but they turned to be quite relaxing.

Also, the aesthetics are nice, I think would play the final version #smw{:TUP:}

Current project: working on a personal website and a portfolio.
Man I'm in love with the aesthetics and that overworld. I like how it has lots of detail and yet it doesn't feel overwhelming. Something tells me it has to do with the calm, waveless water parts in it. Also great job with the colors, overall. They're spot on!
