Super Mario 64 DS

Does anyone else love this remake as much as I do?

I love that it has more stars, more playable characters, new multiplayer modes, better controls, nicer looking Koopas, new levels, a revamped story, better graphics, & other things. It's the remake everyone wanted & more.

Hi.
I think it is better than SM64 in terms of content and one of the best remakes Nintendo has done but not quite there. For 2004, it felt pretty good to have an actual 3D game on a handheld but I don't think the controls are better. They were probably the worst part of this remake. Touch controls were horrible and the D-pad for a 3D game isn't as good as an analog stick (especially since you need a Y button to run). Some people also don't like how they washed out some of the colors of hte game and NSMB-ified some of the enemies and Dorrie (i know NSMB came out 2 years after) and the story isn't "revamped", just slightly altered to fit the 3 new characters. Nothing too big.

The remake was ahead of it's time. On the 3DS it would have been perfect; featuring actual analog controls, a good use of the 3D screen and actually improved graphics.
I only ever played a teeny bit of the beginning of the game because I lost my copy of the game. I do remember not liking the controls at all.

Look at it this way, you don't need three hands to play the remake. #tb{:p}

Yeah, it blew my mind considering the portable before was the GBA.

The Super Mario 3D series also requires you to hold the run button. So the controls are simalar when playing it on a 3DS, which is not a bad thing.

As for the enemy designs, those are top notch. People don't have a clue what they're talking about.

The story is different enough that I'd say it's revamped. I mean, you don't even start off as Mario.

Well even if you are joking, the only complaint I had with SM64's controls is its camera but that's what it gets for being an early 3D platformer

I don't recall not starting as Mario but it's been years and years since I last touched the game so it's very possible I am misremembering

You start as the Yoshboy and unlock Mario a little bit in.

When the game was announced I totally jizzed myself over the ability to play as yoshi in a 3D game. The one thing that totally kills this game for me is that you HAVE to be mario to fight bowser the first time. Yoshi is straight up the best character, he's unique, and can just transform into the other 3 characters. I fucking hate that I have to run into that one room to switch to mario just to progress the game.

I'm not sure how many people know this, but in the multiplayer battle thing, wario has this special move where he can grab another character and swing them around and toss them. I don't think it's possible to do that in single-player.

Also the minigames were awesome, even though NSMB did them better, and added multiplayer to them

Yeah the 3DS alleviates the sore thumb problem a bit.

But the thing about Galaxy 1, 2, 3D Land and World is that the camera is almost always fixed at certain angles, you never had to actually control it. Mario 64 and Sunshine (mostly sunshine) had a free camera, so you needed a way to move it around most of the time. Second stick helped a lot in Sunshine. So having to slow down to adjust the camera was kind of annoying.

I guess it depends on whether you like the N64 controller or not.

I know, right? You no longer get teased with a Yoshi at the top of the castle. Now he's basically the main character. I do agree that the switching character system sucks, you may as just find the caps whenever possible.

The N64 didn't have a second stick either. You had to use the C buttons. Though I will admit that it is faster than using the touch screen.

I just said that in my post. In order to fight bowser all 3 times you have to go into the character change room and become mario, it just doesn't let you enter the level otherwise.

Hi.
The remake was alright, though I was pretty excited for it when it came out. I got it for Christmas from a Ds bundle. Loved it. Better controls? Frustrating, the camera would screw you over, and you're just trying to work the D pad movement trying not to fall off a ledge.

Graphics, colors seemed dull, in the original, they were brighter, I do like the model improvements.

Gameplay was great, I did dislike going to that one room to switch characters to get one specific star, and looking for those bunnies was annoying, the hats are a cool idea, but I think anyone should've been able to wear them, not just Yoshi.

Loved being Yoshi and Luigi, being able to walk on water with Luigi and roast some enemies with Yoshi's fire move. This game would keep me busy for a while, and loved that there were mini games.
I really liked this game as it was my first encounter with SM64.

First 3D Mario I played was Sunshine so when I got my hands on this I thought it was amazing by old DS standards.

Really enjoyed it.

also the graphics were pixelated worse than the n64 and the controls were fucced over a lot tbh. It should have hit the 3ds, not the DS imho.

I thought it was on the 3DS?
I probably would have found it literally unplayable since it was made with the joystick in mind. The special stages in Sonic Advance 2 require the player to quickly collect rings scattered on a 3D field using only the D-pad, and it tends to cramp my thumb real quick, so I likely would not be able to get far in Super Mario 64 DS. I don't see myself being able to do any missions that require any sort of speed or precision.

The 3DS kinda fixes the controls nowadays. The graphics & colours were toned down a lot in the remake to give it a more realistic feel.

Nobody likes the door switching or rabbits. Even in the original game catching the rabbit sucked.

Yeah I mainly stuck to Yoshi, but I enjoyed playing as the other characters when I had to use them.

I'm glad a lot of people actually like the remake. I was kinda scared that nobody would.

Yeah, it's a solid remake that surprisingly still holds up today.

You gobble.

The 3D models were still a big improvement. I'd say it was a good launch title for the DS. It was certainly better than most of the launch titles available for the DS at the time, so waiting for the 3DS would have been a bad move on Nintendo's part.

Hi.
This was back when I didn't even realize 3D Mario games were a thing, so I was just all the more amazed to see this. So much so that I completely ignored the potential issues with the controls. It led me to become so adaptive to much more unusual control schemes in future games such as Kid Icarus Uprising, where I heard nothing but complaints about the controls being too finicky before I played it and yet, I found them as comfortable as I find anything else.

Comparing the graphics to the original, what exactly is the issue here? This game came up with the NSMB style before NSMB even came out, with many of NSMB's assets coming from this game itself. I would also always favour pixelated graphics over the smudgy-looking textures the N64 tended to have. Guess that's what I get for growing up with a PlayStation...

There is just far too much content packed into this remake to even bring up the question of which is better. Extra levels, 30 more stars, more playable characters, a multiplayer and minigame mode, I can't believe anyone would miss out on all of this entirely due to a control scheme which just needs a bit of patience at the very least to get the hang of.

Oh, and my boy Yosh is in it. Man, they really need to make a 3D Yoshi game...

Em, its not that it shares similar designs to NSMB but instead the fact that they made alot of the characters models more generic and lifeless. A good way of understanding what I mean is if you look at the situation of the most recent paper mario games.

Also thats not really the issue with the textures its more so that when redoing them they made some really dull compared to the vibrant n64 ones.(Not all of them though!)

More doesn't always mean better and in this case I really dont think those extra stars add anything good to the game. They seem like padding and the game was already a perfect length, it would be like adding more to portal 1.

The minigames were neat but done better in NSMB.

Overall the remake is just a whole lot less charming and worst.
