Looks fun but rather challenging. You could almost say it's...

Dangerously cheesy.
@Tob: God those urchins look adorable... Will you submit them to the site or will you keep the glory? jk :P

I'm trying to get back into smw hacking, relearning a bunch of stuff and experimenting. I've done some levels, one of which I really liked and was supossed to show a video of it, but GOD zsnes and snes9x footage look AWFUL on YT, so instead I chose a level with no secondary levels to show it as an image.

Cave level

So uh, what do you think?

BTW, would someone recommend me a not so used cave theme for it? Right now I'm using DK Land Voices of the Temple, but it feels a little... off.

First: Thanks for the positive feedback on the urchin gfx

Second: here is a link to download them. I will update this post if it gets rejected or accepted

EDIT: New-ish level, CHEESE BRIDGE AREA

I really like this ones aesthetics. As Gregor said, this looks pretty challenging but overall fun nonetheless.

I want to show my Level 1-3 (autoscrool) of my hack:

Video_level_1-3

Ignore the pipe tiles at the beginning of the level. I just put it to be a shortcut to the end of the level, because I'm testing Overworld Events.
This is what happens when you let me learn and use HDMA

Pretty cool but your gradients are the wrong way around! It looks much more realistic when the lighter part is at the bottom and the darker part is at the top.

Oh yeah, I'm not even consistent with my own gradients.
Thanks for pointing that out

I actually really like the unnatural look of the gradient in this image. I can't really describe why though.
Maybe it would work with a surreal kind of level. Not sure if that's the right word to describe it...
I doubt that's what you were going for though lol.
I'll make a layout eventually...

Thanks though :P
I think it's maybe the shade that gives off this weird feeling.
I made a level for my "Totally Vanilla" SMW hack.

@RussianMan: Well it gives me RTDL vibes, which is a good thing.

Lately I've been working on the Abstract Zone for SMW2, to see which level I want to use as the title screen level. Here's the first level Weird.

Everything is see-through, along with neat A E S T H E T I C S .
BANANA SLAMMA.

Here it is at a bigger size

I have been working on this hack for some time now, albeit very slowly. I am finally getting the overworld to a point where I rather like it (Some of the submaps I still need to do, as I don't like how they came out).
I used ExAmiation to make the SMB3 palm trees dance on the beach.
I am rather proud of it, to be honest, even if there are still some small issues to be taken care of.

Small note: I am using some custom graphical assets from SMTKO (the Stonehenge-like one, and some others unseen, such as the volcano) I hope the authors do not mind as the hack seems to be long dead, sadly.
I think I recall the authors stating you are free to use assets from the hack, but regardless, you should contact the authors to see if they are fine with it before using anything from a hack on the website, despite age.

Also, that looks quite nice, very green, but very nice. Maybe spammed the roses a bit much though.
Your layout has been removed.

I like it, looks maybe hard and frustrating at some points but I can see myself enjoying this kind of level design.

That is a very nice looking overworld you have there, maybe add more textures to the clouds and add some shades of orange / yellow in the lava ? Maybe even exanimate some lava bubbles to make it lively.

Oh, and you should fix the slight cutoff near the waterfall, some inland tiles don't connect.

But man that's a very consitent OW, I'm impressed.
I really like the use of SMB3's OW GFX in SMW - I personally think they go really well together. You also did nicely with the shapes and variety. Something about the water bothers me though, you might want to play with its palette a little more and use other colors closer to blue.

Beach only? Should totally try animating the flowers and hills as well!

>clouds
Yeah, the cloud I whipped up very quickly as a proof-of concept for myself (this whole overworld is still using the 4 main palettes so I can still use the 'event fading' effect), I'm not sure I like the shape either. But thats a good suggestion, it does look a little bland as is.
>lava colors
sure, I'll have to figure something out. I'm always terrible at picking out reddish colors, I can never seem to get the right mix of red and orange that makes sense for whatever I'm doing.
>lava bubbles
damn thats a good idea, I never thought of that. Thanks!

oops.

I can't believe I never noticed that, thanks for pointing it out.
Not sure if I like this, but its better then the shitty perspective shenanigans before.

Yeah, maybe its a bit too blue? Eh. I made a minor change in the pic above, I think it looks much better with some ligher bluey colors in there.

Thanks for all the comments! It's nice to have some outside opinions to consider with these things.

Furthermore, here is an actual level screenshot:

That BG takes up four entire palettes #ab{;_;}

You know how to use LM's gradient function ? Just pick a bright red and bright yellow then make a gradient between them, it usually works for me :

Oh, I see. Well, I fixed too then, heheh.
@Nivvius: Great overworld! The landshapes are nice, it's well decorated and just pleasing to look at. I agree with Spy's suggestions, though, the lava looks too plain at the moment. And yes, the edited water color looks a lot better. The level also seems good from what I can see, the background works fairly well with the SMB1 foreground imo.

Felt like doing some vanilla-ish stuff, uses the classic "water level for everything but mario" glitch. Might turn this into a mini-hack if I have enough interesting level ideas. Not sure if I should do something different with the aesthetics or keep them close to SMW, though, most of my hacks have pretty much the same visuals so I might try a more "custom" GFX style for this.
