I am tired of Hard Hacks and Levels

Link Thread Closed

You can get past this and other parts without savestates if you manage to time your jumps right, even though most of them aren't too obvious at first.
Pretty sure it has always been like that in at least several kaizo hacks so far, except if they actually need tools.

The original kaizo was meant to be beaten without tools, but it was majorly misunderstood.

To use a more modern term, I like to assume Kaizo: Light is a tool-less hack genre. Lots of kaizo makers don't think that way though, and going tool-less in a hack that assumes you wouldn't can be a hell of a ride. I mean heck, even some self entitled "possible without tools" kaizo hacks can throw some bs at you sometimes (see my title...)
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?

No, Kaizo hacks are made to be played as they are without tools. You're thinking of Kaizo Hard and Pit hacks.

Does anyone other than Panga and the dude playing in the edited Asshole Mario videos ever play them savestateless?
I also sometimes use the term 'exaggerated platform hell' to describe Kaizo hard.

There's an entire community dedicated to playing kaizo and kaizo hacks without savestates, and tons of people have done it. Linkdead for example has beaten Medusa's Lair without savestates.

Unless you mean kaizo hard or pit, in which case no.
I don't even find kaizo levels hard anymore (that is, if they are well designed. If it's just spike mazes then they're stupid). They're just a different type of difficulty, usually short bursts of precision or figuring out setups quickly. At least that's my kaizo level design philosophy.

The hardest levels are endurance levels. See Bits and Pieces, where each level's midway takes 400 SMW seconds to reach and is basically sprite spam (but still possible with months of effort, sweat, and blood).

I also find boring levels hard. When I play a boring level, my focus goes places, and I find myself running into goombas for no reason.

JUMP is mostly fair difficulty, I agree. There are a few questionable parts but everything else is so well made that it's just awesome.

I was very afraid of kaizo back then as well, and I refused to play them without using savestates. But once I tried not using any savestates at all, and I found that this made you learn the obstacles. Then, everything doesn't seem that hard after all. The average kaizo level in Korosu Mario World takes me 10 minutes, and the average kaizo level in the original takes me 40 minutes. Not too long.
I finally finished the original Kaizo level 1 and Yellow Switch palace without saved states today. I have to say though it took a hundred or so tries.

I'm still standing by my opinion that Kaizo hacks both Light and Hard AREN'T meant to be played without saved states because the LEARNING PROCESS still consists of plenty of repetition by dividing each level into subsections, repeating them until you get the timing right and then attempting the full run when you finally have them all down.

This learning process still uses saved states and turbo to cut down all the filler dying animation, pressing confirm, waiting for the start up screen...

If you learned every level with 5 lives and have your momentum broken every game over, good for you but you have to ask yourself if all that time and effort spent is worth it. There's so much more content out there for you to consume.

Well, a lot of kaizo hacks that are meant to be played without savestates have infinite lives and sometimes fast restart systems to prevent that.

And I can see why you'd feel like it isn't worth it but a lot of people (me included) enjoy learning kaizo hacks without savestates. You usually make constantly progress even if it's just getting more consistent at the beginning part of the level. Eventually getting to the next checkpoint already makes it worth it for me.

My God all this time I thought you were supposed to do it with only 5 lives... I guess none of the earlier ones I downloaded had the 99/infinite life patch. fml. #w{:<}

Not all self entitled savestateless kaizo hacks have infinite lives, but there are some. That's a good advantage.

Or some could just use worldpeace's retry patch/generator/whatever that lets you retry whatever section you're in when you die.
Every recent Kaizo: Light hack that encourages a tool-less run has absolutely no excuse to not use quick retry and infinite [or a lot of] lives.

I made the mistake in Banzai of setting the lives to 99, but I should have made it infinite. 99 lives can run out so quickly in a tool less run.

The only advantage I could see with having a limited 5 lives is the original kaizo novelty of every single life being absolutely precious, but even then, it just becomes a nuisance. Most speedrunners cheat infinite lives when speedrunning the original kaizo.

Dude, you probably just need to turn the radio and sit in silence. And before that, head to the tutorial here. Also, Google will be your best friend at searching for better level design and difficulty as it should be. I'm pretty bad at making levels. (I was working on my VLDC entry, but I have no idea to do it right now or not.)

I like hard but I don't like being punished for failing.

The problem often comes when there's no difficulty curve; it starts out super difficult or suddenly becomes super difficult without any warning.

I have no use for Kaizo or pit hacks. Watching others play them is pretty entertaining, playing them myself is like doing homework.

Difficult games are for people who have already tired of normal levels, it is normal for this to occur with the most experienced players, I also play to have fun, but every now and again a KAISO goes well
