Pokémon Prism Hack Author Gets a Cease and Desist

Exactly like what happened with Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes, a new development team picked up Pokémon Prism and started finishing it.

That's the good thing about ROM hacks and such of old games. Because old games for NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy, etc. were coded in ASM, if you have the ROM, you have the source code. Just open the ROM up in a hex editor and you can see everything the developer has done.

Click the character on the right side of my layout to visit my Discord server and discuss and play and look at and get updates and sneak peeks of the games and other things I'm making.

The authors of these 2 My Little Pony fan games have removed their games from the Internet.
Rise of the Clockwork Stallions has been updated! Download My Little Pony: Rise of the Clockwork Stallions DX: Director's Cut and My Little Pony: Magic Shards now! Spread this link!

This pretty much goes for all games - old and new. The only difference being that ASM on modern architectures is a good bit more complex, and the code usually generated by compilers rather than written by hand (with some exceptions). Well, I guess this isn't quite the same as "source code", but you can basically change it all the same, which a lot of people (mostly modders) actually do.

Nevertheless, good to read it's being picked up. Hope this one won't get any legal issues.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!

Which is exactly why if they intend to make a 'hack' of a derivative work they may as well build it from scratch.

It's not that hard to create Pokemon-like mechs with turn-based attacks since there is zero physics involved. The challenging part would be data storage. If they had built this from the ground up they would've been able to simply redraw new monsters, switch item names and lore and such to be able to escape copyright and they probably would've even been able to make money out of it.

It's meant to be a continuation of the former work though, which was meant to be a tribute work first and foremost.

Disgusting.

For the love of god, not everything about gamedev has to be about making money.
This was about the developers making a tribute to a franchise they cherish, not just some random game they're making for a quick buck.

Creating an rpg from the ground up isn't 'making a quick buck'.
Even if it's just RPGMaker games.
A lot of work goes into tile placement, event queues and art. A shit ton of work on talking heads, profile pictures and even item icons.
Making a quick buck is creating a Flappy Bird or Match 3 Clone.

I know it sounds a little bit hypocritical being on a romhacking site but the thing with SMW is it has a unique physics that can't be recreated. Hacks are being built utilizing these unique mechanics you can't replicate in C++.

Pokemon on the other hand is a different story since they are a set of games that use the EXACT SAME turn based mechanics used in FFs, Dragonquest, Mother only with a bigger roster. In a way that also makes Pokemon a "clone" of the ffs.

You could say in that sense that using the same turn-based mechanic, Lisa and Undertale are commercial "clones" of ffs.

I would happily buy MM 2.5d or Megaman Rock Force even if I weren't playing as the blue bomber.

For the record, all of the things you mentioned can 100% be recreated perfectly in C++ (or any other language, really). But it's obviously pretty difficult to get things recreated perfectly, so a hack gives you a jump start on that by not requiring you to recode the entire engine.

Sure you can with the physics and enemy patterns but you have to admit it'll be near impossible to replicate the game as it is with all the exploits needed for Kaizo Light hacks for example since a lot of those are unintentional.

It'd be a lot of manual work to accurately port all of the code to C++ (or any higher level language than ASM), but it's still entirely possible on a technical level.
Other than slowdown, all bugs in SMW are logic errors that can be recreated in any language, even if you have to do it on purpose.

They still have the patents for the 10NES Lockout chip valid and it's still theirs. They apparently roasted somebody because of that[citation needed tho :/] (note: a rom hacker, not Tengen's rabbit chip dealie thing)

I was originally going to save my money to buy Sun and play Prism in the meantime , but now I have to buy Emerald second-hand from Ebay to waste my time and won't be able to afford Sun so Nintendo won't get my money. What a shame. I guess that's what you get for being too overzealous with your lawyers.
