Super Mario Bros: The Early Years - A slightly SMB1-like hack - Beta now available!

Standard

We're getting closer! Here's 9-6!

Phew! It stinks down here!

Nasty as it is, it's not the sewage that will kill you down here. It's the BOSS BASS!

Just 2 levels to go!

Pretty creative idea to have a mutant sized fish to try and eat you in a sewer.

Really liking the different ways you bring variety into your hacks.
@Kastylinos: Do you mean darken it more or change the hue a bit? I can do either.

@1UPDudes: Thanks.

I managed to get TWO levels done in one day, and the sun hasn't even gone down at the time of posting this! Here's 9-7!

Time to breach the final castle's outer defenses! That means dodging lots of bullets and Bullet Bros.

The Fire Bros. from 9-2 are back!

NICE DOGGIES!!

Nice levels you have for World 9 Gamma V! #smw{:TUP:}
I think it contrasts well enough, but I'll see what the beta testers have to say. Yep, the beta's out, but first, I have to show off the final level.

9-8

This isn't going to be easy, but if it was, what kind of final level would it be?

Thwomps and fire-spitting statues may be the least of your worries as you progress.

Yes, Boss Bass can swim in lava. This lava rises and falls, making the situation even more chaotic.

We should be getting close now. The Thwomps and statues are being backed up by additional fireballs coming from off-camera. Oh...and there are gold statues that try to pounce on you.

This is the same Bowser from Mario is Missing Done Right, but some of his projectiles are different.

Head over here for the beta.

9-5: Looks like a pretty decent level.
9-6: Boss Bass...blech. I like the design of this one otherwise, though.
9-7: This also looks pretty cool. Nice throwback to 8-3 in SMB1 (except much better than 8-3).
9-8: More Boss Bass...more blech! This looks okay, though it seems rather mundane for a final level.

Now that you've finished it, would you like me to run through the beta, or perhaps play the hack blind instead whenever I LP it?

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
@Kastylinos: You're not the first to notice that. I fixed it.

@imamelia: It'd be cool to see you do it blind, but you can test if you want.

Here are some of my thoughts on what I've played so far:
Good Points
* I like the consistency with the amount of levels in each world.
* The level themes get more varied compared to your previous hacks, which is a good sign.
* The custom bosses are easy like most Mario games.
* Some of the levels have neat gimmicks (e.g. The balloon gliding one), which are honestly probably the best levels in the hack.
* The hack isn't too difficult, so it's a good hack to take a break from the harder hacks.
* The power-up system & invisible midpoint system are pretty nice.
* Autosaves after each level.
Bad Points
* The star system is broken in the sense that you can use your stars on secret exits you've already gotten. The worst part is, the stars don't seem to respawn when reentering a level.
* Some of the music you have chosen is unsampled when there are sampled versions of the song available. Unsampled versions tend to lack the energy of the original songs, so I highly recommend using sampled versions whenever possible.
* The midpoint points should be before the boss rather than making the player have to replay the second half again.
* On autoscroll levels sometimes you die midway through the victory animation. I recommend moving the goal to a separate room.

That's all for now. It's a pretty good hack overall.

Hi.
@Wind Fish:
Thanks. I decided to remove the auto-scroll from 7-2, which was the only level that had it and a normal goal. I still moved the goal to a separate sublevel though because I made the Lakitus respawn.

Why go through all the trouble of inserting sampled music when you can just insert the unsampled version and be done with it?

Since AddMusicK became the default AddMusic program, sampled music is just as easy to insert as the unsampled songs/ports.

You've got admit that most sampled versions of songs sound way better.

Hi.
Sampled music is absolutely not just as easy to insert as unsampled (even if it is still easier than it was with Addmusic 4.05), and though it may be more accurate to the original track, that doesn't mean it's more fitting for a SMW hack.

I don't do any additional steps when inserting sampled music, so it pretty much the same as inserting unsampled music. As for saying sampled songs not fitting SMW hacks, you could argue that any song that isn't Mario doesn't fit most SMW hacks. Hacks generally have different rules when it comes to what resources you can use. A good 90% of hacks hosted here have graphics, blocks, ASM, music, and other stuff that would not be considered fitting or consistent by normal means.

At the end of the day, it was just a suggestion. Gamma V can take it or leave it as its her hack.

Hi.
I've liked her progress with this hack thoroughly. I think unsampled music still sounds okay, even if there are sampled versions of them. Unsampled ports seem more SMW-y. You don't have to copy all enclosed samples to the "samples" folder then.
