[Soundtrack] The Classic Sonic Porting Project - Let's get back to it!

These sounds are really good and close for SNES instruments.

I've got the Sonic 1, 2 & 3 SFX and instruments ripped to WAV and the sustain (loop points) can be configured, and maybe these tracks could be made with the original samples and tempo and stuff.

most definitely give me some of this archive to convert with snesbrr. or do it yourself.

also I wish you'd given more feedback on hydrocity, but I pretty much know what's wrong with it
(I should stop neglecting this so I don't keep bumping it)
1. please use the link button next time. It's at the top of a post window and looks like a green underlined A.
2. Both links give me a "Video not found" error. Reupload them or simply store the SPC on your My Files section and link it.

EDIT: the post I was responding to is gone now. Thanks very much.
Uhh, hello, anyone here? I`ll just post this, if you guys dont mind.

So, yeah... my submissions here DEFINITELY werent good. So I decided to work my SPCs to the ground up, including techniques and samples I have acquired until now, and making them sound MUCH better. Hopefully this is good enough now! lol

Sorry for having neglected this thread for far too long. Anyway, I should probably weigh in on some of the ports I'm seeing on here.

SONIC 3 & KNUCKLES - SPECIAL STAGE by TheInsanity115
The instruments you chose work surprisingly well in this song. It kinda reminds me of McVaffe's Latin Sphere OCRemix of the song. Some bits sound a bit off in timing though, particularly at around 0:40 and
0:59.

SONIC 3 & KNUCKLES - LAUNCH BASE ZONE ACT 1 by Theultimate12
This one sounds very good, except for at the pitch slide sections, which sound nothing like the original song.

SONIC 3D BLAST - GENE GADGET ZONE ACT 1 by Theultimate12
The only thing I'd change about this is the sawtooth sample, which sounds like the General MIDI sawtooth and doesn't fit as well as some other sawtooth sample might. I can't think of a good alternative though since I generally do unsampled ports.

SONIC 3D BLAST - RUSTY RUIN ZONE ACT 1 by Theultimate12
This is the weakest of theultimate's 3 ports. First of all, SEVERAL notes are off. This version is missing the triplets of the original. While triplets aren't the easiest things to work with in SMW music porting, they're very important to the sound of this song. In addition, the clarinet and oboe sections that start at 0:32 sound like they're playing off-key. The samples themselves aren't bad at all, but either the transcribing of those parts to .txt is off or the samples aren't properly tuned.
Quintesson Judge: Silence, or you will be held in contempt of this court!
Hot Rod: I have nothing but contempt for this court!
- Transformers the Movie (1986)
oh what this is still a thing? nice.

anyway I think I did a Sonic 3 stage clear but I don't have access to my pc right now so I'll get that to you guys in like a week or so

@Gamma V: can you update the fp please? I'm sure people don't want to scroll through the entire thread to find one minute thing. and also please add it to the list when you submit new stuff to the music section

@Ultima: something is very wrong with the way you compress or store rar files. i was able to extract this one but all of the spcs just give me a loud tick and nothing else (might be because I'm on android with ES File Explorer and Modo right now but see the statement about not being able to get to my pc right now)

(E: yeah it's my Android equipment being bad)

another thing: i don't have any of my mmls anymore. this was the case since about December actually, right before i finished building my pc my laptop decided to start a startup repair boot loop, so i had to wipe it. so don't ask me for anything from before then since it's all gone. sorry

EDIT: so i just downloaded all of gamma's new ports pending on the music section.

Doomsday- Some channels sound strong, while others sound very weak. I may try to Frankenstein something together out of yours and Gloomy Star's once I'm home in a week

Glowing Orbs- I can't hear the bass very well, so make it louder. Don't use that slap bases sample in that way (the ones that aren't actually the bass), either. Doesn't sound great. The lead you used is very typical to what I've seen you use a lot, and I'd like some more variety. The high pitched flute sample sounds quite nice, though. Overall, the MML sounds correct but I don't like how you did the instrumentation.

Gumball Machine- See the general synopsis for Glowing Orbs.

Marble Garden 2- Mostly quite strong. Good job here. Sorta wish the Marble Garden 1 ports used this sort of style.

Mushroom Hill 2- Lead is strong, but again I can't hear the bass very well, and it needs more echo overall.

Spring Yard 2017- The intro needs to be an octave up from where it is, I'd use a distortion guitar as the lead during the first half, and the music box sample needs to be an octave down. Otherwise very strong, likely due to the MIDI you used.

All I have to say.
On PC now so I can grab you guys the sonic 3 stage clear (even though it's bad)

And Ultima's RAR works on my PC! Which means I need better Android stuff!

I have kinda the same opinions as Gamma on those ports, except:

LBZ - The percussion seems kinda off to me. Not the timing, I'd just prefer to hear more fitting samples. Also the main lead around 15 seconds is technically correct, but I think it's pitched incorrectly (most remixes and midis also have this pitching). Also just a little too fast.

GGZ - The mixing sounds wrong, and I think the original had something closer to a finger bass.

RRZ - Just a little too fast, and I don't really like your sample choice.

Hmm, could you go into more detail on the percussion? Were you expecting more powerful percussion, or a bit more softer percussion? I actually think the intensity of the percussion fits well with the song here, since the song wasnt very powerful to begin with, but I'm curious as to why you think so. lol

Yeah, maybe its because I havent panned the SPC at all (and I lost the files I had to make this, so welp). And well, I did kinda want to match the intensity of the bass (since FM basses are mostly pretty hard and fat), but now that I found how to sample FM stuff, I can just try and do this again, but with different samples.

Would you suggest some better instruments for it, then? I have tried to get the "ruin-y" feel of the song, but I am not really sure which samples I should use, which is why the samples are probably pretty bad for it.

Also, about the tempo being fast by a tad, that's a problem with the program I use, and not exactly my fault. Apparently it doesnt really convert the tempo right, so that's why it sounds faster.

Hope I managed to answer most questions lol

I meant that I was looking for more powerful percussion, yeah. I think the original percussion was "pluckier", if that makes any kind of sense? Probably just Genesis sample compression lol

Well, it might not actually be the samples that are annoying me. I'm not actually sure. Maybe if you did a version with better notes and fixed the tempo it might not seem as bad. I'll still offer you some direction: try something "softer" and less 8-bit sounding.

kinda difficult to read lol. sorry.
BAM, EXPLOSION.

Original for reference.

Not finished, obviously. Does anyone know how to make the beginning part fade out like in the original? I could probably keep using the v command but I don't really like how that would have to work.
Tossing this here in case this project is alive/revives.
For the same reason as gloomy, Dropping this Sandopolis Act 2 Port.
It's not on the SMW music section yet, which is why the link is a MEGA link.
Meh, might as well post this too, just because. I dont really have the MML for this one tho, but I hope its okay! lol

The bass needs to be much louder. Use @17 and crank it up, or make all the rest of the channels quieter.
The lead needs to be an octave lower, too. Also, the sample you used could be better.
Lastly, add echo to the song with ASDR. I'm sure the current music tutorial teaches about it

(E) I messed around with it myself, and I think I improved it quite a bit. maybe I'll do this with the Sandopolis 1 port too. download

(E2) fixed dl link
Sonic 3 & Knuckles - Hydrocity Zone Act 2

I guess it's time to revive this thread to its full glory.

A couple notes on whatever channel is playing @0 are wrong at the beginning. The echo is also kind of distracting at times, and I think if you're going to do whatever effects you did you should use them on all the channels.

Good port tho
I've been working some more on the Underground port so uhhh have it or something

I know the bass is broken near the end, but the two channels use exactly the same data, except one starts an octave higher. Maybe that sample can't handle high octaves? (e) yeah i did an experiment and changed it to a sample I know works, it came out just fine. it's definitely the sample.

(e again) I made a whole new version of the song by messing around with samples. Grab it here although I don't really think I used the best samples for this version, so also get me some feedback too thx
here's something

I'm not sure why, but it seems there's a bit of a problem with this, so I won't release it to the music section rn; I can definitely release it at any time I want tho, since it's a actual usable MML!!! lol

lmao no feedback

Anyway, I noticed some of the octaves sound wrong at times and at around 25 seconds the notes on channels #4 and #5 should be lower (listen to my Sandopolis 2, which has the same segment, for the proper pitch). It's much better than the existing port though. No clue why it got removed.
