Why I Despise ROM Patches (RANT AGAINST THE PATCHING FANBASE, YOU ALL RUINED ROM HACKING)

I love ROM hacks. They're a great way to dive into the creativity of another user without having to buy another game that you don't use any other way (Super Mario Maker, LittleBIGPlanet, WarioWare DIY...).
However, when it comes to Super Mario games, I have a problem with how they're normally distributed: patches.
Patches are a way to play ROM hacks "legally" by patching them to games you've got.
However, notice how I said "legally", with the quotation marks. Sure, that's the intended way to use them, but there's still the fact that most people aren't gonna buy a Super Nintendo, a copy of Mario World, and a bulky ROM copier just to play the Second Reality Project. Most people, if they have to put up with patches, will just download them from places like Emuparadise and LoveROMs. So there's no real point in patches unless you're one of the 2% of people willing to shell out $100 for Kaizo.

This, however, is only a minor issue. The real problem is everything else.
There are so many types of patches that I don't even know all of them. IPS, BPS, Xdelta, Xdelta3...the list goes on! You're gonna need so many programs, on top of the space that you need to reserve for the SMW ROM and all the patches, that you're better off buying an SDXC, which kinda takes away the whole 'free' aspect.

THEN you need to download the patch, copy the ROM, open the right program, OOPS! you opened the Xdelta program, close out of that one, open up Lunar IPS, click the patch... zzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZzzzzzZZzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ...
OOPSIES! All you will ever be able to find is an unheadered ROM, so have fun with your craption! (crap and corruption)
Oh wait, here's a program the converts unheadered SFC ROMs into headered SMC ROMs, but not the other way around!
Dang it, BSNES only works with unheadered ROMS! Time to go get a different emulator!
SNES9X...too mainstream.
ZSNES...no sound.
Super Everdrive...check the first paragraph.

Welp, you'll never get to play Kitiku Mario!

So yeah, patches aren't good. Other places, like Sonic Retro, know patches aren't good, so they just straight-up use the ROMs for Genesis hacks
Did I mention that I make comics?

It doesn't matter what you think, you can't change the website. ROM distributing in general is illegal, and this website isn't known for it. If ROMs were distributed here, then Nintendo might take the website down. Getting a ROM is bad enough, sharing a modified one is worse. But with the modified game as a patch, it's your decision to patch and play it. Meaning it makes it... less illegal.

if you despise patches how did you start loving romhacks

No, it doesn't.

Yes, those exist, but exactly nobody uses anything except IPS and BPS, and Floating IPS handles both of those.

Oh no, it wastes 20 megabytes.

That was a valid complaint ~15 years ago. If a significant fraction of your computer storage consists of SNES ROMs and their patches, either your computer is 15 years old or you've got more duplicates than non-duplicates, both of which are problems even with plain ROMs.

Floating IPS doesn't need you to copy anything. Lunar does, but we dropped that one long ago.

sure, if you want to open wrong program, why not

Not needed with BPS patches, which is nearly all of them around here. You'll need to care if you find an IPS lying around somewhere, but that's rare.

Latest one does accept headers.

no. bad superdoom1, go to bed.

If you want that conclusion, or any other, argue based on the current situation, rather than mix-and-match of all issues we've ever resolved and a few that never even existed.

As I mentioned, Sonic Retro straight-up uses a link to the ROMs. (This is the only reason I find myself coming back to Pana more often than Kitiku Mario.)

A grand total of 8 seconds were wasted in choosing the wrong tool. Exactly 8 of those seconds could've been employed into associating the patch file with their correct tool.

The over 50 thousand people who managed to patch it no problem must've been gifted.

I'm not sure I should be taking this post seriously, but nonetheless risking having the site shut down someday just so people can save 8 extra seconds is #tb{:?}

I've never heard of Xdelta and Xdelta 3.

Alcaro practically corrected your info, even if he replied in a rather hostile manner.

I don't think it's very much our fault if you rely on emulation by mobile, which I believe isn't really a convenient way of doing emulation.

1. And? People play Vectrex, use Windows XP, find Super Nintendo Classic Editions...
2. That's still 20 megabytes. It adds up, considering games like Minecrap, Shovel Knight, and Portal are on a lot of computers along with those romhacks. Suddenly, you wanna get a complete collection of every Nintendo game made before the new millennium and you only have a few gigs left on your computer.
3. I haven't ever used Floating IPS. The thumbnail doesn't match with Lunar Magic. (Call me an idiot all you want; I got A-B Honor Roll at my school last year. I'm just like that.)
4. Everybody clicks the wrong thing every once-in-a-while.
5. I already took a one-year-long break from Mario romhacks because of Mario Maker once BPS became mainstream. Only recently have I returned.
6. Higan is just BSNES?
7. ???

1. Covered.
2. If Notch didn't play the obscure Infiniminer, we wouldn't have Minecrap.
3. I'm not saying it's not easy, I'm saying it's less convenient.
4. ...Nintendo doesn't shut down sites, they shut down games. Let the fans who got the ROMs upload them to other places. It's like Hydra; cut off one head, two more take its place.
5. I would like to answer this one through the lyrics from a song in Alvin Chipwrecked.

What do you mean? I didn't even get my copy of Brutal Mario from here; I got it from Emuparadise, where you DON'T have to patch it!

why you complaining about legal then idk what ur saying about patches if you just download the roms anyway
Did you guys know I'm a seer? I can see exactly how this thread is going to go.

Instead of waiting a little bit and letting everyone talk in circles before closing it, I'm just gonna close this now while it's painfully obvious to anyone who has read superdoom1's replies that nothing is going to come of it.
