How do people feel about Yoshi Coins

Like the title said. I am curious to know what people think about these coins.

In the original SMW there was no way to track which levels you had all coins in.
However with ports/hacks we can now implement a counter for said coins.

My question is how people feel about Yoshi Coins.

Do you collect them?
Do you use them in your own hacks?
Do you feel that they can be replaced with more rewarding items?

Personally I like to use them and try to get the player to apply some knowledge of introduced mechanics in that level to then use that to get the coins.
They're okay, but I've often noticed that people tend to put them in places where it's not worth it to go for them, at least if they keep the original system (5 Yoshi coins per level, 1-Up for getting all 5, midway points don't save them). I'd prefer them either being repurposed to give you things other than extra lives or replaced with another collectible that does the same.

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.
when yoshi coins are actually worth something (as in unlocking new worlds/levels) i really like trying to collect them all. If they are just being thrown at you for a 1-Up i can't really care less about them. Hiding them at hard reachable places won't change anything if the award is just not worth it. They can be used to tell the player how far they got in the level though what is actually kinda neat.

I feel starcoins are better than dragon/yoshi coins, theyre pointless in SMW other than a 1-up
Do NOT take my responses for any sort of fact, I am as one would say a NOOB. I am by no means a "L33T Hax0r" and yes that WAS a reference to the hammerbros from partners in time.
I tended to put them either slightly out of the way, or when I had branching paths I'd put one on the harder one.

I had other collectables that were intended as actual rewards for difficult optional areas.
I changed them to make them better.

In my hack, I replaced them graphically with food items. Each bite gives the player 20 "coins" (I use the 100 coin roulette patch, so that is a big help), adds 20 seconds to the timer, and they still give 1UPs when you collect at least five (1UPs are vital to my hack's health system, so they're usually worth going after).

Some levels have more, or fewer, than five. Sometimes you feast, sometimes you go hungry. And in some levels, those rewards are a lot more important.

In short, I feel the same way about them as I do about anything else in this game. The vanilla game didn't make them very useful, but with all the ASM and tools at your disposal, you can make them as valuable as your imagination allows.

This all the way.

I personally feel they're alright for exploration and to get 1-ups, but you can also hide secrets behind them as I saw in some hacks, much like the 1-up checkpoints, or even repurpose them however you want.
Windowless ride, feeling alive
Are you alive or just breathing?
In Super Mario World, they're not tracked and an extra life is all you get if you get them all, so I don't bother collecting them.

If the game tracked collected Dragon Coins, which Yoshi Strange Quest does, I would collect them.

i normally get them as a challenge, or when the hack rewards you.
Sometimes for me its fun, but in specific hacks i dont do it.
I get the Yoshi coins because I can and like the user he said, for an extra challenge to improve my skills just a tiny bit more.
I’ve used items similar to Yoshi Coins in my latest hacks. I try to make the reward for collecting them worthwhile, so I hide them well.

As for collecting them in other hacks, depends on what the reward is. If it’s just another 1-up like in SMW, I won’t go out of my way to track them down. But if I do see them there then why not?

I feel in platformer games in general there should be some decent incentive to find collectibles.
I think they're fun to collect, and their hiddenness makes a good challenge, but only if they are rewarding in the long run.
please click this!
I only feel like they are worth collecting if they show up on the world map that you have gotten all 5 of them or that it unlocks certain things in the game.
I'm a completionist; I try to collect all the JOSHI COINS, especially if they unlock new levels and shit

but I can see how others think they're overall worthless if they offer no reward or are way too hard to get
I like yoshi coins. They're fun to grab even if they're worthless. Tho if i die and lose them im less likely to go off the beaten path to recollect them. But I like them! Yoshi's cute little smile and the sound it makes and the shininess of it.

e: it is weird designing with them sometimes just because of how worthless people see them as. Same as 1-ups. ideally they'd be a good enough reward on their own but people see them as valueless in most situations, which requires some other external incentive rather then the self-satisfaction of getting them.
ask me if i give a f*ck...
I think they can come in handy if the hack's hard enough to make an extra live worth the problem of finding them all, though collecting every YC in every level was kind of fun in the original SMW because they actually were so hard to miss, even if extra lives weren't so hard to get as in, say, SMB 3.
take a look at my youtube thingies
I like to put them on sub boundrys. you get extra lives, and as a bonus you get to leave half the coin on the screen for good memorys.

Ummm...

Anyway, in my levels, I put 3 one-ups. One in a star block, one in a hidden block, and one from the yoshi coins. Just my 3 cents.
In all honesty, I have no idea what I'm talking about.
