Glad to see some further progress on this! Everything is looking excellent, as usual, though I feel the need to agree with Purple Rex on how strange the floating pipe in the top left corner of the submap looks. And yeah, a message box shouting something like "Only those with the silver P-switch shall proceed to the right" or some other sort of indication would come in handy after the cave part.

As for the glitch at 4:00, I myself am not too sure as to what causes it to happen, but I wonder if you're using those brick blocks in .bin format? If so, that may be the root of it all, and I would suggest you switch to .asm instead. I may be completely wrong, though - just making a wild guess because I remember having the same issue with .bin brick blocks in the past, and when I switched to .asm, everything seemed to work fine.

As long as the P-Switch is pressed, the ?-block will give a coin and Mario stays on the platform. Perhaps, I will put it 1 to the left nevertheless.

Hm, I don't think I will do that. This is part of the challenge plus there's a checkpoint not far back. Also there's really only one place where that happened all the times I tested the level, though with a high chance there.

No, he isn't. That's why there's a reset pipe which also resets the time now. If the player is all the way to the right, he still is able to make it back to the reset pipe. Maybe I'll consider Broozer's idea to place a message though.

Yeah, I forgot to remove the pipe. It will eventually be placed somewhere else. Stupidly enough, I have to enter and exit this subworld via pipe (or star) because I use other ExGFX here, even though I would rather enter and exit it via linking paths. #w{:<}

Yup, I didn't place the pipe somewhere else where it belongs, so it should be ignored. As for the message, thanks for the suggestion. Maybe I will do that despite the player can always reset and come back.

No, the bricks are .asm blocks. Also, it's actually the ?-block which glitches. I think it's either caused by a patch or by custom blocks, but I am not too sure. It didn't glitch before (like in the second demo for example).

It's about damn time I revive this thread from the undergrounds and give you some insight into non-secret world 5 levels, my newest level included.




This is a really old pic which shows this ice world. Ignore the top left pipe, it's been removed ages ago.







The first level Frosty Fields. It features line-guided stuff like chains and platforms and generally is an athletic type of level. It has an undergound part to it (the foreground is self-drawn and animated). More platforms, munchers and piranha plants are waiting.
At the end of this level, snow sets in (which is a cluster sprite).

Fire and Ice is the second level which has a secret exit. Most sprites shoot fire here. I also made use of the Sumo Bros for the first time in this hack as well.

Reznor's Icebergs features a block that shatters when no sprites are on screen. You will face some enemies, Monties included, which you need to kill in order to move on in this iceberg level. A fire flower is of great help, also because you can gather some frozen coins or dragon coins, which is true for many levels in this world. The FG is self-drawn and animated. Eventually, Reznors appear in a custom mini boss fight.

Last but not least, the most recent level, Balloons and Clouds. As you might know, I'm trying to implement as many original sprites as possible the original SMW has to offer (besides custom sprites). This time, I made use of the P-balloon and the cloud that has no time limit. There's a bunch to explore in this level and it also has a secret exit. As you might notice, the snowflakes are getting thicker as you progress in this world.

Also, the castle #5 will be the last level I need to build.
Note that the music in each level might be subject to change. Some advise would be of help. I'll keep you updated whenever I have something worthy to show.

Unfortunately I forgot to make footage of the overworld, but I can show you a picture I guess:





I'm currently working on the ice castle, then I need to make some bugfixes and musical changes before I can release the demo. It will contain full five world with 43 exits (plus some secret levels which don't add to the exit count).
Why do I release yet another demo? Because the release of demo 2 was ages ago and so much has changed since then, it's unbelievable. Furthermore, the last world will probably take me yet another few ages before the hack is finally complete and I really don't want you to miss the experience of playing what has now been done.

Here comes the Ice Castle from world 5, the last level before the demo will be released. It's been done to 96%, there's only a small cutscene and the overworld events/settings missing. But as for the cutscene, I cannot create it before the weekend next week, when I'll come to my parents' home. The cutscene tool won't work on my current PC, but on my old one.
Stay tuned for the demo, it won't be too much longer. But there's no way it'll be released in 2017. I assume late January/earlyish February but we will see.
In the meantime I've updated/refreshed/polished several more minor things in the hack so I'm really happy with the progress lately.




Here's the first screenshot, so as you can see I've made use of the giant wooden spikes pretty late in the hack. The level is called "Crushed Ice" and suns (as I call the hotheads) like to dwell around crushers. Surely I also made use of frozen blocks in this whole world.




There's an underwater section here as well. After the wooden log smashers, you'll find the blue, narrower but faster smashers as well.





Then there's a part of this level, where you have to kill all suns on the screen to pass and activate an onimous switch...





...in order to activate the very fast smashers. Things will get pretty tough here and there are also some ice blocks which shatter when touched (not shown in the pic, they have slightly different GFX).





Little sneak peak on the boss. It's based on a sprite from a famous SNES game, but graphically altered by myself. Can you guess the game?


So this boss will trigger a cutscene which I've yet to make.

Looks pretty challenging. Even though its not super icy looking with its visuals I still get a cold and chilly vibe from it which is good.

I can't guess where the edited sprite is from as my knowledge is pretty limited with SNES games. (outside the classics)

Looking forward to seeing more and to playing the demo when it is ready.
Took me some time to finish this castle, as I've been getting into Pokemon speedruns again and have very little spare time for my SMW hack anyway. Also I had to get back on my old computer to implement a cutscene which is why there was some time in which I couldn't work on this at all. I've tweaked some scenes a little bit, but now I'm quite happy with the result. Maybe I'll go and add some bats in the first room, but then this should be done.

Glad to announce the happy 10th birthday (more like birthmonth) of Taomb and the hack is still alive.

Finally. Over 10 years down the drain since I started working on this hack and now it's high time I released it...


DEMO 3


This hack features five complete worlds with 45 exits to check out
* New levels
* New overworld
* New music
* New story which is not complete in this demo
* A LOT of custom (self-drawn) graphics
* Many custom effects/sprites/blocks


Expect a mysterious adventure through tropical islands, dubious fields, haunted forests and icy areas.
Please keep in mind that the first two worlds are really old, though some parts of levels have been revamped. The great quality of this hack definitely lies within later worlds, so don't quit too soon!
This hack starts out really easy, but gets harder and harder as you progress. World 4 and 5 do get challenging.

This hack has been completely made using Lunar Magic 1.63, Block Tool Super Deluxe and SpriteTool (among others), so there are much more limits than what you can do nowadays with newer versions.




Last fun fact: I've made use of 210 ExGFX files (80-14C, FFA,FFC-F) within this demo.

I found cutoff in the level "Coral Pond":

You used a ground-dwelling Monty Mole instead of a ledge-dwelling Monty Mole.

EDIT: Fixed typo.



Yeah that was pointed out ages ago, but honestly I completely forgot about this. Yep, it's right the wrong Monties are used here, but they don't really create cutoffness. In fact, the "correct" Monty type would leave a wrong tile in the dirt. I need to look into the graphics file and rearrange stuff.

Hello everyone,

it's been another 5 years.

In the meantime a lot has been improved on this, we are well into the late stage of, yes I cannot believe it either, completing this game. 5 worlds are already complete, as you might know from Demo 3, world 6 will be the last. And we are almost done, it's only one singular level to go: Bowser's Castle. (And yes The End level with credits and stuff, too.)

So I guess it's time to keep you updated on World 6:


Bowser's submap is inside a volcano and this map changes a little bit as you progress.



This is the first level, Darkness Falls, which features a silhouette level, just some demonic red eyes here and there and you can only see the background which is a little animated. This hack starts out really easy, but things do get difficult in this world.


There's also an underground section to this level featuring some custom ninjis and I made use of SMW's Disco sprite which yeah, unfortunately can cause a little sprite lagg since the SNES needs to do a rather big amount of calculation.


Moving on into the third ghost house of the game, What the fish?, we see Torpedo Teds for the first time which Mario needs to ride over lava. I made use of different speeds of Boo rings, too.


There is a layer 2 section with a Porcu Puffer and some more Ghost House enemies, which can get a little difficult as well. There are unshown parts of this level which I want to stay a secret, though.

Speaking of secrets, there is more to this world than meets the eye and the player has to go back as well, to move on with the story and the game itself. I don't want to give everything away though, but it is very special.


Inspired by my all-time favorite hack, TSRPR by FPI, this level has its own Yoshi Flight called "A Final Flight". Yes the bird (you interact the most with) is a redrawn Yoshi, is also sometimes a different sprite, lol, and you get to ride him inevtiably for the first time. Since we obtained one of the artifacts already, we can overcome the big lava sea. This is getting very difficult...


.. but we are almost there! In front of Bowser's Castle! At long last.

It's only Bowser's Castle to do now, but don't expect progress too soon. That's gonna ba a lot of work, I need to draw a huge amount of GFX to complete the story and create the boss fights themselves. But so far so good. Almost!

I have a feeling that must have been a bit frustrating to ignore all the new possibilities that happened since then...

In March, it'll be 16 years :p
And I'll definitely not be done until then.

But yeah, it's become difficult still using to the old tools and versions. I haven't been able to update to GPS/Pixi/UberASM/whatever, but I am glad I can use the newest Lunar Magic and AddmusicK and that everything still works well.

Edit: I'm gonna add a SMB3 disco sprite or anything related like a Boo ring or something to the Yoshi Flight level and give it different flame GFX for some extra variety.
