Does the SNES have a soft reset feature?

I was playing around with my SNES Classic. I discovered that holding L + R + Start + Select seems to reset the game. I first discovered this while playtesting my hack. I tried holding L + R + Start + Select on a bunch of other games on my SNES Classic, and the game would almost always reset, whether it's Super Mario World, which was released in 1991 or Mega Man and Bass, which was released in 1998. Secret of Mana 2 instead brings up a sound test! I was incredibly surprised that I found Secret of Mana 2's sound test COMPLETELY ON ACCIDENT! The English patch translates the sound test, too! I love video game music and sound tests! Secret of Mana 2 also has a great soundtrack!

I did a quick peek into the Super Mario World ROM Map to see if there's anything involving pressing L + R + Start + Select, but I couldn't find anything.

Is this an SNES Classic thing or did I just discover a super secret SNES feature about 20 years after I first touched an SNES?

I don't have a real snes to test it, but if you hacked your SNES classic, then it might have just added the feature in, like the ability to return to the menu with select+down on hakchi

Otherwise, It's kind of the most common SR combo imaginable, it's not that surprising to see it work
you can do it with sd2snes if you enable it. otherwise no
The soft reset feature is on all of the SNES Classic games by default.
I'm pretty sure that some SNES games had a soft-reset feature coded into them, but I don't think it was L + R + Start + Select (I think that combo only became popular around the DS or maybe GBA era). I do recall something like A + B + X + Y + Start + Select or similar existing in some games. Don't quite remember which games, though.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
Well, then why does Secret of Mana 2 bring up a Sound Test when you press L + R + Start + Select? If this L + R + Start + Select thing is a SNES Classic thing, then does that mean that Secret of Mana 2's Sound Test can ONLY be accessed on a SNES Classic?

I believe the L + R + Start + Select sound test thing for Secret of Mana 2 was added in as part of the fan-translation. It's very much possible to access on real hardware/emulator because it's coded into the game itself, whereas the SNES Classic's L + R + Start + Select soft reset is coded into the system.

Secret of Mana is one such SNES game that has L + R + Start + Select mapped to soft reset.
Here's an incomplete list of SNES games where L + R + Start + Select soft resets:
  • Stunt Race FX (only works after selecting a car)
  • Kirby's Dream Course (doesn't work until the title screen appears)
  • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
  • Kirby Super Star
  • Kirby's Dream Land 3

In addition to the list above, several Squaresoft games have this programmed in. Secret of Mana might be the first released SNES game to have this feature mapped to L + R + Start + Select. Final Fantasy IV lacks it.

Several games in the Game Boy family of handhelds have soft reset mapped to A + B + Start + Select. The (3)DS family uses the same combo as the SNES.
