Ganymede - Some music credit (or, how Kevin ported 30% of the entire soundtrack)

Standard

Wow, Impressive.
Here is some more of the still-nameless Level 06. Still very much a work in progress, but I like how it's going so far. Designing natural themes is actually a lot of fun.

In spite of the cheerful nature of this level, it is a watershed moment for the man on the boat. Up until now, and in spite of the obstacles and dangers he has faced, the island has proven to be the refuge he thought he wanted when he left home. The sad sacks have been a nuisance, the bullies a menace and the weeping shadows a legitimate threat. They continue to be so.

But, lurking underneath the scenery, creeping up behind the no-good nabobs which frequently populate it, there is one enemy which the man never even considered, never even gave a moment's thought to, until the moment his descent behind his own eyelids came to an end. This enemy hides behind no one face, wears no one skin, and fears not one move in the man's repertoire.

What chance does one man stand against doubt?

I got promoted at work in January, and though I make more money these days, there's less time for this old thing. I still take every opportunity I can.

Chapter Two: Land of No Shame
This has to be, in my opinion, one of the more interesting hacks as of late; mainly because of the way it presents itself so artistically. Every idea put forth just seems so unique and different.
Sad to hear that you won't be able to work on this as often anymore, but I do hope to see it eventually finished. Really looking forward to what more you have planned!
Thanks! You might like to try the demo, it contains everything I have finished up to what I'm doing now. And, I should be clear in that I remain faithfully devoted to this project, and that my current circumstances limit the rate of my progress, but never progress itself. Even before my job situation changed, I might spend a whole month on a level, working daily.

Chapter Two: Land of No Shame
I will be submitting Ganymede, Episode 1 - First Night a Free Man as a full hack release. This first chapter of the story will feature all of the content from the official demo release, fully updated, with a new prologue and access to the first level of Episode 2 (which is the one I'm working on presently. Other secrets and bonuses can be expected, as well.

now it's complete full hack?
What I want to do is complete the maps, have all the levels plotted out, and once there's no risk of breaking the rom, I can release the entire hack in episodes, where you can continue future episodes without starting over. The amount of content, and level of polish, merits consideration for submission, in my opinion.

Chapter Two: Land of No Shame
I've been working on version 3 of the map. And in the process of doing so, I completely broke the rom. It's hardly the first time, nor will it be the last. This is why you back your shit up religiously, my friends. It's why I have over 100 deprecated roms going back four years. This will be a temporary inconvenience at worst, and when I made version 2 of the map, I also destroyed the rom that time.

Anywho, here's what it looks like at the moment. I'm experimenting with terrain textures (the grassy areas have gone through at least six iterations so far). The left side of the map has not had much revamping work done so far.

ALSO! I have entirely revamped the original post in this thread, in which you will find more details about the plot, the background of the hack itself, and the music which has inspired all you see here.

The snow behind the waterfall at the top left looks kind of out of place, but aside from that it looks great
your simplistic human mind cannot possibly comprehend the complexities of my thoughts
I agree, it is not very attractive. Eventually, I'll come up with something to replace it. Thank you for your kind words.

Chapter Two: Land of No Shame

The main map is in good shape now, and I've finalized the layout and paths. Note the branching T-shaped path in the northeast quadrant. The level here is going to be a good one, and the exit you take determines your whole gameplay experience. Either direction is a commitment to one half of the game. Going west takes you up some very indifferent peaks and down into the twisted snarl of the Glades of Uncertainty. Going east sends you straight into the heart of a furious volcano, out, and then back in again. Both paths converge at two points, and once you complete one, you can attempt the other (or try for the boat right then and there).

Chapter Two: Land of No Shame
That's probably the most impressive overworld I've ever seen. It's nuts how natural that looks!

I can heap praise on it all day, but I would like to say a few critical things: the dark side of cliffs look great, especially next to their lighter sides, but on the west side of cliffs it looks a little flat.
The snowy area and the rugged area right next to it also don't seem to mesh together well, because the rugged area is so dark in outline and the snow is too light in comparison.

If you don't mind, could you post a screenshot of the exgfx you drew?

Other Submissions of mine!
Thanks so much! I will surely take the feedback into consideration, because it's hardly a done deal.

Most of the graphics are in three files presently. Eventually, I will use all six (every level will have a unique tile once I am sure I have the placement the way I want it).

If you go to the OP, or my C3 thread, you can try the sampler and explore the map (and the semi-finished submaps I did not show off).

I've been following this project for quite some time and I have to say that even only with your words you can see the love and care you're putting into this. I REALLY like the aesthetics, they are very consistent throughout. I will try the C3 sampler to give you some feedback #tb{:j}.
I would love to know what you think! Thanks for the kind words!

I've been on a break for the last two weeks, because I got Breath of the Wild for my birthday and it has sucked up most of my free time. That doesn't mean I don't think about this game every day. In fact, there is a system I have in my head, which will involve making choices at key points, thereby determining the course you take through the map.

hay

Breath of the Wild is still stealing a lot of my waking life. But, I have gotten back to work. I'm currently setting up the intro, which I have been avoiding for a very long time. There's not much to show off but here's what I got.

I've also done a lot of story writing, as there needs to be something more to glue this game together than simply the game itself. Originally, the game was going to have three endings. I've decided that there will now be four, in total. The two primary outcomes are that the man either will LEAVE the island or STAY on the island. Each of these two outcomes has a good and a bad variant.

Maybe it's just me but in the first world I found the 3rd and 4th levels visual awkward to play, mostly the former so here is an example.

The Stellar Reach
One of the first things I did is jump on the star mushrooms only to find out you fall through it (supposed to be a foreground object?)
Correcting this habit was a bit difficult and while it was done the mushrooms honestly look like they're part of the stage half the time.

Because the main character jumps poorly (spin jump notwithstanding) it kind of limits the yoshi-esque mount's usefulness BUT that could be intentional.
From my limited experience I like it and the music is well done. The Cape-Sword is a nice concept too.

I'm so glad you got to play it, and thank you very much for the feedback.

In regards to The Stellar Reach, I do find myself agreeing with you that they look too much like they should be solid platforms. I'm going to consider finding a new look for them. Or maybe I'll just make them solid. Stay tuned.

I'd also like to know your issue with Dunke's Wetworks being visually-awkward, always helps to know what sort of things I'm blind to.

:)

Maybe it's just a nitpick but it's tileset related.

It didn't give me problems anywhere close to Stellar Reach but it's not very visually discernible. It could stay the same way, it is a nitpick, but Stellar Reach is a different story. #smrpg{sad}

Now that I remember what's the music that plays in "Back of my Eyelids?"
