The Uncertain Fate of Adobe Flash

Adobe Flash may be old, but with 3 years remaining in it's lifespan, Adobe Flash is about to die. Flash developers will now switch to HTML5 instead. It's more powerful and faster than the browser plugins we use. According to the recent post from the Chromium blog:

HTML is faster, safer, and more power efficient than Flash and works across desktop and mobile. Three years ago, over 80% of Chrome daily desktop users visited sites with Flash. Today only 17% of users visit sites with Flash and we’re continuing to see a downward trend as sites move to HTML.

But don't panic, Adobe has to say about this:

Several industries and businesses have been built around Flash technology – including gaming, education and video – and we remain committed to supporting Flash through 2020, as customers and partners put their migration plans into place. Adobe will continue to support Flash on a number of major OSs and browsers that currently support Flash content through the planned EOL. This will include issuing regular security patches, maintaining OS and browser compatibility and adding features and capabilities as needed. We remain fully committed to working with partners, including Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Mozilla to maintain the security and compatibility of Flash content.

What do you guys think about this? Discuss.
It's about time, really. No reason to keep maintaining and supporting antiquated and insecure technology when there are better alternatives by now. It's of course a bit sad for the loads of content that already exists for flash, since a lot of it probably won't be migrated to HTML and will thus become unusable, but still the time to move away from Flash has definitely come.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
I feel like this marks the end of an era, sort of. Well, I guess HTML5 was the start of this "end". It's a good thing, really. Flash has become obsolete with time, web plugins like it and Java are not really needed anymore and this puts some pressure on some companies to finally move to better technologies.

I'm happily waiting for the day that I can uninstall the program from my computer without having to worry about potentially having issues with any website. I did that a good while ago but sometimes I'd still have a site or two complain about it.
Windows 8.x and Windows 10 include embedded versions of Adobe Flash and cannot be removed...at least not yet.

RIP, IKEA PAX Planer. I'm glad I was able to order my furniture before the end of 2020, because who knows how many years it'll take them to finally migrate to HTML5. I've checked yesterday, and the planning website was completely unusable, expecting you to still run Flash.

I'm sad. I understand why they shut it down, but .. all those old flash games and crap I used to play when I was younger!

One of these days I'll have to figure out how to use BlueMaxima's Flashpoint.

Believe it or not, a Chinese railroad that uses Flash has gone haywire!
It would be totally hilarious that if deactivating Flash would cause all the trains in the city of Dalian in northern China to stop working.

This is actually very fascinating because China is known to "borrow" software and make their own tweaks to make it compliant with the Chinese government so seeing that they were running flash proper and not a government accepted version is kind of amazing.
