Dumb Super Mario World Fun (Working Title)

Standard

Preface: Boy, it sure has been a while, huh? Several years, in fact! I used to be big into the SMW scene here, but never amounted to any significant project, really. Big dreams, little practicality, little drive. Then college happened, and... long story short, I saw someone stream a pretty good SMW hack and it sorta inspired me to start again.

Aim: Well, I don't really have it in me to make some big-picture, story-oriented SMW hack (not that there's anything wrong with those!), so I'm just making a SMW hack that is meant to be played and enjoyed. Nothing too complex (for the player, at least; the patches I've used... phew!), just good-ol' SMW. Not quite Vanilla, but you'll see.

Progress: I've had a few working versions and I'm currently at what I'd call DSMWF v0.5.0. I've installed some major patches and constructed the Overworld, gotten a list of levels with some ideas for mechanics and gimmicks... I'm at the level-building stage now.

OW: The Main Overworld map looks like this, and my submaps like this. If a level looks to go nowhere, I've removed some of the secret warps and stuff for now, but nothing crucial. The core graphics are StantheMackiar's alternate Overworld GFX. I've also spliced in CaptainFoxx and Mogu94's SMAS SMB3 Overworld Layer 1 tiles and Pikerchu13's Overworld tiles, as well as GammaV's Mountains and Pines and WhiteYoshiEgg's Clouds BG GFX.

Also, I'm using Thomas's Overworld Yoshi Coin Tile Locks patch, so some levels are just bonus stages meant to give the player more to play and more coins to collect.

The entire map is split into a "Wishbone Progression" scheme. You need Yoshi Coins to pass the lock at Level 114 in the "Bonus World" in the lower-left submap, which takes you to the final world on the lower-right. But after Level 5 on the Main OW, the path splits into two. Each path has three worlds, and the worlds are expected to remain equal in difficulty to the other path (so, i.e., the second world on path 1 is just as hard as the second world on path 2). That said, I don't plan on super-high difficulty, as I want this to be accessible.

Notes: At this point, I'm only concerned I've put too few levels in, but I don't think I want to crowd the Overworld any more. The submaps have 6 to 7 mainline levels, with 1 or 2 bonus stages beyond that.

Good to be back, y'all! Have a great day! :)

Hey! I really like what you've shown so far. The overworld looks great and you made some really nice choices with the graphics. I don't think having too few levels in the overworld should be a worry. After all you can always go back and add more if you want. It just takes some rearranging. Also, hacks with a medium amount of levels are definitely more accessible than those that use most of SMW's available levels and exits. It makes for less of a commitment. Looking forward to what you have in store for the levels!
This is one of my favorite overworlds so far, but I would recommend thinking a better title, since the current form is not pleasant to watch.
That is an awesome overworld! Hopefully one day my overworlds can be that intricate and pretty.

Is the treasure ship actually going to be a treasure ship? If not, I want you to change the graphic so it doesn't have the kanji for "treasure" on it. Otherwise, the overworld looks awesome!
Kinda in hibernation for a while. I hope to be back in full swing soon.
