VLDC11 - Discussion and Questions

Hello,

since my english isn't the best I need to ask one question in here.
I didn't understand the part with the recoloring.
Am I allowed to change the colors of tiles with yychr so the tile uses the last colors of one palette instead of the first part of this palette ?

For example I would change color 02 to 08.

You are not. That's what we meant when we said no recolors. I'm sorry, that rule has been a little confusing for some people.

You can still change palettes used on the map16 page and make custom level palettes.

Ah I see, thank you for explaining :-)

Is there a reason why custom music is limited to up to 4 tracks?

It's not that you can use more anyways because you are restricted to 4 levels.

I assume you're talking about "merging" tiles. A "merged" tile is when you take one tile, such as the candle in the background of the vanilla castle, and put it over top another tile in your graphics files to make one new tile composed of two otherwise vanilla parts. It's commonly seen with dirt fill tiles, where people would put things like bones and other things into dirt for decoration.

You are still allowed to do everything else you mentioned in your post.

I'm sorry if it's a silly question, but my english is kinda bad and I'm new to all this, is it still ok to overlay Tiles using Layer 1 and Layer 2, since you can get this effect with tile in the ground also like that >.<
Might I suggest changing the rules to say that this contest is specifically meant to display what Lunar Magic itself can do?
I say this because there appear to be people confused about what can and can't be used program wise, and maybe we should specify that you can ONLY use LM.

Yeah, you can still do that. You just can't combine two tiles into one using a graphics editor.

Except that's not true? How would you mix and arrange tilesets if you can't use a graphics editor or add custom music with a tool?

Lunar Magic is the primary focus of the contest of course but there are allowances for certain other tools based on the ruleset that's been defined. Only OLDC restricted all outside tool usage.

As well as editing palettes, map16, ExAnimation settings and Super GFX Bypass.

Speaking of limitations, I'd suggest a contest allowing limitless usage of LM, however forbidding usage of any other tools. LMLDC, maybe?

the time of entry (500 SMW seconds) is counted without deaths and without failures in puzzles, right?
The player should be able to beat the whole level start to finish in 500 seconds with time to spare if they do everything correctly and don't die. The rule is mostly to prevent people from trying to get around the rules by making it 500 seconds to get to the midpoint and use the fact the game refreshes the timer upon death to make the second half another 500 seconds.

not to minijudge but i really wanna highlight this point. if you (the author) finish your level with like 50 seconds left on the clock, it's too long. you should be able to finish it with like... 150-200 seconds left on the clock. always account for how it'll take longer for other people to play your stuff.
So I just played every entry and looked at everything with the all seeing eye of a moderator, and I gotta say, the majority of them (save for a few) are what I expect from first day contest submissions.

Probably a dumb question: is fan-judging available to do?

Because I'm kinda in the mood to give it a try, maybe #tb{^V^} (later though, not now)

yep, you can do fanjudging / level critiquing and i'd actually encourage people to do it. it helps others get feedback & it's a fun thing to do
I opened up a thread to fanjudge levels and it didn't get nuked so yeah, should be fine.
I tried using the Layer 3 BGs and it messes up the status bar palette and causes massive cutoff at the top of the screen. Can't insert the Sprite Status Bar patch since ASM isn't allowed.
Okay, so I've been playing through the levels submitted in the Rules & Submissions thread. I've got to say, I don't agree with the two time restriction rules. Somebody submitted a puzzle level which requires thinking. Those types of levels need an unlimited or a high time limit so the player can observe what is being presented. Having to worry about the clock is not ideal in these scenarios, because not everyone is a puzzle master. You can't expect people to solve them quickly without screwing up sometimes.

This rule applies to levels than can be beaten in less than 500 seconds if you do everything correctly. As long as it's allowed, you can use the ability of forcing the time limit to reset once you enter the level. Is doing so legal?

That would be fine. Though wouldn't that be considered bypassing the 500 seconds rule? The puzzle level I played didn't bother resetting the timer when a pipe or door was entered. I'm assuming it is either disallowed or the author was unsure as to whether it was acceptable.

Hi.
I think it should be clarified in the rules as for whether forcing the time limit to reset once upon entering the level is allowed, even when the level is itself passable in less than 500 seconds.

I've gone ahead and clarified it. You are not allowed to reset the timer when switching sublevels by using the Time Bypass settings.

I'll admit this was a bit of an oversight on my part. We'd considered the Sprite Status Bar passed up on it. After the contest launched, I was then informed of the Layer 3 SMW backgrounds and figured we could allow them. I realize now that these obviously conflict. I'm hesitant to put out a new base rom that includes the sprite status bar if only because I don't want to mess up people who are already working on their levels. But if there's enough demand I think we can do it.
