SMB - The Wicked Star Story [SS]

Super Mario Bros.
The Wicked Star Story

Information
Super Mario Bros. - The Wicked Star Story is the project I've been working on ever since I first became interested in this ROM modification scene.

I had originally intended to have a demo prepared for SMWC3 May 2009, but I was unable to get a product finished in time. With luck, though, I should have something ready soon.

For the time being, I wanted to go ahead and show the progress I've made so far with some of the earlier levels. Several months ago, I decided to reboot my hack completely by starting with a clean, fresh ROM and getting better organization from the start. I think if you compare what I have below with what my project used to look like, there are some pretty clear differences.

Credits
I've been trying hard to keep track of all of the people who have assisted me with this project, but I am sure that I am forgetting several people. If your name is not on the list below and you know it should be, please send me a PM so we can get that fixed. I could not have done this without any of the following people.

..., Anikiti, AtomicShroom, BD132, Bio, Bloodstar, Blue Rabbit, Boingboingsplat, Broozer, BusterBeetle, Buu-Huu, Carol, Davros, Delmaru, Dispari Scuro, Dotsarecool, edit1754, Ersanio, FPI, Ghettoyouth, heisanevilgenius, Icegoom, Iceguy, Ice Man, InvisibleCoinBlock, Jimmy52905, Kaeru, Karasz, KilloZapit, Kyoseron, Mattrizzle, MidiGuy, mikeyk, MiOr, Nameless, Pac, Romi, Roy, Schwa, Shigeru Miyamoto, smkdan, SNN, Soul2Limbo, Supertails, SWR, Techokami, WhiteYoshiEgg

The Game
Super Mario Bros. - The Wicked Star Story is a game based largely around the games Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, and 3, with elements of the later games thrown in for fun. I've tried my best to combine good level design with appealing graphics and fun gameplay, along with a story that will unravel as the adventure continues.

The Mario Bros. wake up one morning and receive a letter from Princess Peach. Yoshi Island is under attack by an army of Shy Guys. At the same time, Goombas and Koopa Troopas are roaming Toad Road in the Mushroom Kingdom. Once again, Peach calls on the Mario Bros. to save the day. Meanwhile, something is wrong with the night sky - it just doesn't look right anymore. Could these strange incidents all be connected somehow? Only time will tell...

If I moderated your hack, there was apparently a 90 percent chance it was rejected.
Andy, these screenshots are very interesting. The first pictures give me a totally SMAS-mood, and the little heart near the "Peach" signature is cute. :3 Also, it seems, this hack has a real story, with lots of NPCs and little extension storys. The graphics are fantastic, I like the SMAS-FG and SMW2-BG matching. That fonts on the title screen are pretty good, too! So, I'm really interested about your hack, keep it up, hope there will be a demo or something. :)
The graphics are awesome, and I like the story. I hope you'll finish the demo soon, I can't wait to try it!
C3 stop the 8th

This booth has a wealthy collection of screenshots. They seem ready to play. I would try the IPS patch now, but the sign says that no demo is available. I only wish that my own SMW hacking project had this much progress, but I will not work on my project because I have too many other SMW hacks to play. My C3 bag already holds a few new demos, and I still need to explore about half of the convention floor.

I guess that "The Wicked Star Story" is a SMW hack. The graphics look more like "Super Mario All-Stars", but I can see a slight variant of the SMW status bar, and that world map looks like SMW. The one screenshot shows a spring. Will Luigi carry that spring to a better place, like Luigi does in SMW, but not SMAS?

I played SMAS, but there is a shortage of SMAS hacks, so I guess that hacks like "The Wicked Star Story" are the best available.

Now I turn for the other half of the convention floor...

You have some very glossy graphics here and the level design seems nice. Can't wait for the demo!
I haven't been following this hack very closely until now, but it looks great. I'm really liking the consistent SMAS style, and the overworld looks especially nice. Looking forward to a demo!
Not bad Andy. These graphics give the feel of a SMB4.

From the looks of it, It seems you're going for a classic SMB feel, mixed with interactivity via ASM, and new age GFX to accomodate the hack.

Keep at it man. It's looking like a classic throwback.
Thanks for the positive feedback guys. I welcome constructive criticism, too. I'm really trying to make this as good as possible.

It's definitely an SMW hack, but I've tried to change certain things that I never liked about SMW. Hopefully, this will be a good mix between SMB1-3, SMW, and SM64. And Luigi WILL reach that spring, somehow.

That's high praise coming from you. I appreciate it.

You have pretty much summed up my goals for this project. If that feeling is coming across through the screenshots, then hopefully I'm doing my job right.

The hack looks good Andy!
cool

looks like a great hack
The hack looks very nice, to be honest. I am sure I will play it once it gets released.
My blog. I could post stuff now and then

My Assembly for the SNES tutorial (it's actually finished now!)
Incredible, it all looks so different, but so Mario at the same time... I love it! I think I'm gonna really like this one ;) Keep up the good work!
Wow, the thing I like about this hack is there seems to be so much more going on around the regular "Mario goes to levels" setting. I can only name a few hacks that have done it well, let alone at all. I'll keep my eye on this.

BTW, your overworld is AWEsome.
