| Tip: Only use a few different kinds of enemies per level. Overdoing it can make your level feel disjointed and clunky. |

I didn't understand why the OW pipes/stars were behaving so erratically (read: not all working correctly) until I loaded a backup without any patches applied and everything worked fine. So, I wanted to ask this here.
I want to apply the classic fireball patch and the classic piranha plant patch (palette). First of all, are these two compatible? Is it possible that applying both of them caused the erratic pipe/star behavior? Second, should I apply the patches to a clean ROM or a only-slightly-modified ROM as opposed to a full hack, and then transfer all the data?

Well, I just know that every IPS patch MUST be inserted to a Clean ROM (I don't know about xkas patches).

You don't need a clean ROM all the time.
I applied IPS patches to my ROM I'm using, and it didn't break.
