Jigsaw's Test

Greetings SMWC users. We want to play a game. No, our game is not what your used to. There is no princess to
save, no big boss that needs to be defeated, no seven random objects that need to be obtained. No...your only
goal is to make it out of this room....alive. Do you have a strong enough will to live? No matter what you
choose to say, there is only one way to prove it. The clock is ticking....so make your choice.

After a few months of helping eachother out, Kc and I decided to put our talents together and create a short demo of our future team hack. Now, just because this demo is one level doesn't make it any less impressive. This hack is totally unique...and it will offer an experience that neither Kc or I have found in a SMW hack. Don't believe me? Give it a try....I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised:)

Here are some screens to show off the first few seconds of the game:

And here's the file:

Jigsaw's Test.zip

Also, there are two "exits" in this hack. I won't say more than that though...as it could ruin the surprise.

Also, we both ask that you please remember...this hack was a joint effort. Where one person was weak, the other one could make up for it. We have no problem of you recognizing our individual talents. But please...we worked very hard on this, and we appreciate all recognition:D
Finally, we are able to release it hehe, it was sooo much fun making this hack with Foursword4, and I think we did a good job, I'm glad we was able to finish this by C3, and can't wait to start work on the next thing. ;)

Holy hell, this game owns!

It took me some time to figure it out, but that just increased the fun-factor.

This is probably the most unique SMW hack EVER made =o

I can't wait till the final release =D
Hehe... this small 1-level demo is quite tricky... and somehow, I found it really spooky. The custom music that you guys added in the level is really... scary. I also liked all the gimmicks of this hack, and the things that you need to get in order to go further the level. This is definitely awesome. Great job on this, Foursword4 and Kc!
Very nice, and very unique! I figured it out with 50 seconds left. :)
I've removed my NoFades patch until I can find the brightness code for Star Road warps.
Took me a LOT of thinking. and one time of dying >_>. but this was so much fun. I can't wait for more. C3 is starting off AMAZING :)

Foursword, I beat this in ten minutes... (savestates) I thought there would be more because you said it was only the beginning. You got me with the "Exit" sign... When you fall into the pit though, I found a bug:
Keep running left and right until you get enough momentum. Run/Jump into the tape recorder. The screen will scroll up.

Also, that knife was mean, man... I saw what I had to do, though...
Ultimately Great! I love this. This is pure original material that you don't find in any ordinary hack. Keep up the great work... I'll be watching, and waiting.
this looks real nice. And your OW graphics are fantastic. I like how you give dark and light shades for the cliff sides
Fantastic is my say. Please, continue on this hack. There SHOULD be blood! LOL
Your layout has been removed.
Amazing! Would be good various challenges in this hack.
Now I leave my IPS patches of my hacks for everyone play and edit as you want to.

Bramble Invasion & Surreliatus

Oooooh, this looks REALLY nice. I can't wait to play it when I come home.
Took me a while to figure out, I even fell for the fake "exit" first. That level was very clever. I think you guys might win. :)
Breaking this down into categories:

Story: I loved the Saw movies, and this hack follows the same idea. As I told Kc and foursword4 prior to this, they have nailed Jigsaw's personality perfect, which is rarely done in hacks. It really makes you "feel" like Jigsaw has actually confined you.

Graphics: All beautifully done, especially the pictures in the little "cutscenes" and the text. The pictures resemble objects (such as a hammer and a knife, which look nearly IDENTICAL to their real life counterparts), the the text is made from "blood".

Music: One track, but that track alone is enough to sum up the feelings of the level. Plus, if you've seen the Saw movies, you'll get the reference.

Design: It all comes down to this. I must say, this is one of the most unique SMW experiences I have ever seen. Unlike most hack, the trials in this game are actually trials. If you don't follow the clues laid out before you properly, you will suffer. If you get greedy, you will suffer. There is so much to do wrong while playing, yet even if you die, you'll want to keep trying .. and even when you DO mess up, you get more mad at yourself because you overlooked the answer.

All in all, this is a beautiful experience. It's something I thought I would never see in SMW hacking.
Ah yes, this was quite a fun little hack, but I did notice a few small bugs.

1. After opening the large door, the middle of it, where one would normally expect to enter, is actually halfway between the two points where you can enter. Not actually a bug, but slightly annoying. I suggest reworking this so the center of door is where you enter.

2. If you enter the left half of said door, you end up in the wrong room. I suspect the door was placed over the border between two screens. I strongly suggest moving the door one block to the right.

3. Time does not stop flowing during cutscenes, which can lead to this:

I'd suggest using the Holy Water block in custom blocks and just setting it to act like empty space (block 25) instead of water.

4. This game was clearly not meant for Luigi. Here's how I know:
-a. Luigi is ugly on the map screen

-b. Unlike Mario, Luigi starts the level out small
-c. This means he can enter the small door right away, taking him...

-d. Entering it again solves the next puzzle for you too.
-e. Finally, and most obvious, Luigi can't get past this part:

I suggest you either fix Luigi's mapscreen colours and make him start out big like Mario, or use the "disable 2-player games" patch. Considering the storyline, the latter would make more sense.

I have to say, the concept is impressive, very origional. I'll try this out later tonight! Saw themed Mario, who would have thought lol.
I'm sure I can say this on mine, as well as Kc's behalf, but we are very ecstatic that the community likes this hack. Even with the short amount of time that we had to make this, we truly did our best to make it as enjoyable as possible.

@Count Crotchula: That isn't a bug...that's part of the pit.

@Aiko: You can thank Kc for that light effect. He put a lot of work into it...and I must say, it looks amazing!

@SNN: Wow, our first review! We're really glad that you liked it. It's nice to see how people who have never watched a Saw movie react, but it's even better to see how a fan of the series thinks of it. We hope we can please you, as well as everyone else with our next chapter:)

@Netto Takashi: Most of the bugs you mentioned never happened when we tested it...which I find rather odd. We left the timer running in cutscenes on purpose...why would time stop anyway? It just adds to the suspense. This is shown in one of the notes. We didn't think of 2 player...since it's not that big of a problem...but I suppose we can fix it after C3 when we upload it to the site.

@Everyone else: We appreciate all of your comments^^

Looking at the ROM in Lunar Magic, the door is placed just on the right side of the border between screens, NOT half on one side and half on the other. Seeing this, I have no idea how this glitch occured. o_O It did, though. I swear it did.

If Mario's really close to the edge of the screen, it will take him to whichever exit that screen is set to.
Wow, I have been away most of yesterday and just got back today, and I'm so happy to see many people enjoyed this new SMW experience that me and Foursword4 worked hard on, I look forward to start work on the the next part/parts with Foursword4, and hope you guys enjoy them.
