I am fighting through the first SMW+ game, and it's mind-bendingly difficult (although I'm not the best Mario player ever).

I know, right? I still don't get how people dig up such old threads. It seems to be a trend.

And Slash Man sounded like a newbie the time of that post too.
Unless there is a newer "Hardest SMW Hacks?" thread, it's better to post here than to start a new one.
So the sudden bump is acceptable?

Sigh. I don't get bumping at all here. But oh well.

~

When I was a noob, Brutal Mario killed me. Now I laugh at myself when I remember those times.
Item abuse 2...
Living on the E... oh wait, you said it had to be a good hack. If I was allowed to name that, then there would be no point continuing the thread because no one has seen anything harder than Living on the Edge.
Well, I'm only on world 4 in Rise to the Challenge and have not used a single savestate (progress is quite slow), and Hoarfrost Hike does not look like the fun kind of challenging to me, but Drive the Desert Bus owns them all (all the non-Kaizo ones at least) only because it takes 8 hours!
SMWCP. It's not hard per say but the jumps in difficulty throw you off so badly. It gets really bad come world 3/4.

I no longer get the bumping rules here. :/

Well, from what I can tell mods use to trash threads right away when they saw I bump, but now since some people have been saying some threads where closed when they posted things to the topic, mods have been looking for that. From what I can tell anyway.

SMWCP isn't that hard for me. The only things frustrated me in that hack were the special world levels and a few sections in Bowser's Castle. Some of the VIP series were really difficult and sometimes annoying and frustrating at times.
I've always been a fair fan of Kaizo Hacks, but frankly they get on my nerves. I do Let's Plays, and I've LPed both Kaizo 1 and 2 with overlayed commentary. Ohhh, boy did I get pissed off.
Kaizo is a breeze.
But Pit of 100 Trials or a Enigmatic Mario are hard. I find Enigmatic Mario Harder Though.
Since this seems to be on-topic, I might as well reply to the bump.

Well, in my opinion, here is countdown of the 5 hardest NON-kaizo levels:

#5 "Tricky Temple" from Second Reality Project 2
Reason: A lot of it involves careful note block jumps, and you have to keep momentum, because there is usually a hazard right above the noteblock, so if you bounce straight up, you die. It also does not help that you have to play the level small. However, it is a good example of a level that trains you to play Kaizo hacks without actually being a kaizoish level itself, and the annoying jumps become fun once you get the hang of them. The level tests a combination of speed, timing, patience, accuracy, and precision.

#4 "Are you blind" from Mushroom Kingdom Meltdown 2
Reason: This level not only tests your ability to jump precisely and accurtely, but it forces you to wait at a safe spot because the lights keep going on and off. Many times, you don't have a safe spot, so you have to remember what the screen looked like when the lights were on, making it a hardcore gaming challenge as well as a hardcore mental challenge. The worst obstacles are actually the sprites, since they move, so it is very difficult to avoid them when the lights go out.

#3 "Trent Reznor's Home" from Nine Inch Fireballs
Reason: I don't need to explain why my level is so hard, because a bunch of other users have already done so. In the part before the midpoint, there is a place where you have to dodge 4 Luigi-boos, then get past some bouncing Marios. For some stupid reason, I chose to enable layer priority for the ribbon decorations, so a ghost might be hiding behind one of them. Also, the bouncing Marios require precise timing to get by. Inside the castle, the 4 doors are imbalanced, because door 1 is much harder than the other doors. Door 1 involves precise swimming, followed by some precise spin-jumping, and finally, some precise cloud-riding. Not to mention I was quite careless when creating the hitboxes for some of the lava tiles.

Alright, now we are getting into the top 2.

#2 "Rupture in Reality" from An SMWCentral Production
Reason: First of all, it was made by Raocow, and the difficulty was meant to match his insanely high skill level. Not only do you have to worry about fish that constantly try to kill you, but there is also a layer 2 scroll to confuse you even more. That scroll can also screw you over many times if you go the wrong way, which is basically a way of punishing players who have never seen the level before and don't know what to do. Finally, at the end of the level, if you go left, YOU WARP BACK TO THE FRIGGIN START! Now a lot of people say that Raocow does not know much about level design, but I will take the other side and say that Rupture in Reality is actually a very well-designed level. It was highly creative, and must have taken a lot of effort to build. Despite its difficulty, it is one of the neatest levels I have come across.

#1 "Sizzling Spires" from An SMWCentral Production
Reason: There are two main parts that seem to cause trouble. The block snake part requires really precise timing and movement in a couple areas. I actually felt like two of the flames should have been moved one tile right to make that portion significantly easier. And then there is the submarine part. It is enough that there is a lot to dodge, but it makes things worse when the hitbox is so confusing. Furthermore, I heard rumors that the creator used rewinds when playtesting, thus making Raocow the only proper playtester so far (unless I am mistaken).

So there you have it, I named what I think would be the 5 hardest non-kaizo levels. However, doing #2-#5 with rewinds will make the job really easy. Only Sizzling Spires is difficult even with rewinds.

I didn't think Sinister Dungeon in SMWCP is hard. It was actually pretty easy and I didn't think the "reverse keys" part was hard. I often beat this level by a method like "leap, stay, leap, stay, turn around/walk". It's always useful to jump a lot in this level.

Yeah, Rupture In Reality is sometimes a pain to beat. Raocow made it a little too hard I guess. The horizontal scrolling part was a little confusing and it was also a pain too.

Oh, yeah, Sizzling Spires is a pain in the ass without savestates/rewinds. I used some rewinds in some places. I didn't seem to beat it without them. I could do the submarine part savestateless because here you just need to dodge a lot of walls and firebars. The main part is hell-a difficult. I must watch Raocow's LP of SMWCP. I want to check if it's possible savestateless. :P

um well savestate-less, I'd say raocow's What The Hell series is a nice challenge, and it's actually really creative with it's difficulty, so it's not like just spammed everything everywhere

or you could always go with Kusottare World if you didn't want to have fun or something
I edited my previous post, please see it now. I removed Sinister Dungeon from the list. Apparently, I was trying to play that level late at night, and that was not a wise idea. It requires a great mental capacity, which is limited when you are past your bedtime. Sinister Dungeon is definitely not hard by any means. I modified the list, and also added a bit of content.

Timed reversed controls with conveyor blocks that are over pits of lava and a glitch with the reversed effect can cause your game to freeze if you get a Flower during it?

Then again, you tooted your own horn by listing a level you made on that list.
I did also think that Rupture in Reality from ASMWCP was pretty insane. It did confuse me a little, especially those annoying fishes that keep getting in my way. It took like 2 hours to pass that level. Also, some of the VIP series' levels can be hard w/o savestates.
