Tip: Press F2 on the level editor to see sub-screen boundaries. This will help you avoid glitching Dragon Coins by putting them on the sub-screen boundaries.

Can anyone give me some tips on how to make a decent overworld because my one looks plain and scattered?

One major tip!
Try to make everything look naturall.
Ow and don't screw up by doing everything too fast, Be patient!
Use the empty space along the right side to build pieces and plan out your paths before you permanently change anything. Keep in mind that level tiles are 16x16 and not 8x8, so you may not be able to put levels exactly where you want to (and thus you need to fiddle with your layer 2 design to compensate).

Also, you can make event tiles in 8x8 mode if the ones given don't include something you want/need.

Last bit of advice: plan on spending a loooooooooooong time working on it. Took me two days to do mine, and I'm only using one submap.
