SUPER MARIO BROS. - THE WICKED STAR STORY

Story
-----
For centuries, the stars over the Mushroom World have granted powers to heroes in times of needs.
Generations ago, there was a star that became corrupt and cruel, and it chose to grant its powers only to those as evil as itself.
Loathed by its fellow stars, the Wicked Star was cast out of the heavens, forever exiled from its kind.
On earth, the Wicked Star caused much trouble and destruction. The rulers of the world decided to ally with one another to capture the Wicked Star. Using magical rings, they bound the Wicked Star within a temple buried far beneath the earth, sealing it away for good...or so they thought.

Screenshots

Shown here is the World 1 "welcome message" that details the situation on Yoshi Island. Note: I wanted to make the first Mushroom power-up in the game a little special.

Shy-Guys feature prominently in the first world, and I've always preferred classic Piranha Plants.

This is the highest point in the first level ("Strawberry Woods"), accessible only by taking an alternate path. I stole the Star Coin from Icegoom's New Super Mario Bros. Remake, since I never really liked the Yoshi Coin. Plus, the star fits in more with my game's theme, and this doesn't take place in Dinosaur Land.

Here is a cave underneath Strawberry Woods that is full of giant toadstool platforms - just like with the first mushroom in the game, this is the earliest point in the game in which the player can obtain a Fire Flower, so, again, I wanted to highlight it a bit.

Here, Mario journeys through the Raspberry Hills, but finds them infested with legions of Goombas, Tweeters and Shy Guys (shown below getting whomped).

Shown above is one side of the lake at the top of Kappa Mountain on Yoshi Island.

The goal at last!

Yoshi's sister Yoshette appeals to the Mario Bros. for help in getting her eggs back. This is one of the game's sub-plots and is also the reason for Yoshi's involvement in this quest.

Yoshi is free! He agrees to team up with the Mario Bros. to get his sister's eggs back and to stop Bowser from obtaining the Wicked Star.

In Blackberry Cave, Mario and Yoshi face Shy-Guys, Snifits, Goombas, and Piranha Plants.

Here's a fairly simple puzzle in an out-of-the way corner of a valley above Blackberry Cave. There's a Star Coin up here, too!

Deeper in the cave, the passage narrows.

After emerging from Blackberry Cave, Mario and Yoshi head downhill to the shores of Blueberry Bay.

Blueberry Way is a shortcut to Berry Castle.

Mario faces a Porcu-Puffer and lots of Blurps in a secret grotto.

Berry Castle has been cursed! It has been magically transformed by Kamek into a death-trap overrun by enemies.

Luigi prepares to climb the tower in Berry Castle.

This Shy-Guy mans a Bill Blaster and is shown here taking a shot at Luigi.

Morton Koopa Jr. taunts the Mario Bros.

Pictured here is the showdown with Morton Koopa Jr. at the top of Berry Castle. Note that Morton's palette has been changed so that he more closely matches his color scheme in the game's official artwork (in SMW, he was green). Also, Morton is a little tougher to beat this time around.

Yoshi Island - the first world in SMB:TWSS.

Micro-Paragoombas!
So, in short, I'm not really making any radical changes to the graphics because I really like the classic SNES look. Any comments or suggestions are welcome.

Wow, I must say it looks like you've done an eggcellent job on this hack!
(it's apparently egg day so...yea...)
I see no Mistakes, or Graphical Glitches... which is great!
Definelty Liking the Idea of Yoshi's sister.. It really adds to the story
lol @ the Bulletbill Shyguy! That's awesome :3

Everything in the hack was working just right. I did find the secret exit in the first level (don't ask me how I did it!) it lead me to an unfinished level so that means I can't get to the fortress right. I don't see anything glitchy at the moment so well done so far!

Wow - thanks for all the compliments so far. I am really glad to know that there is nothing major that stands out as "wrong." Seriously, though, any constructive criticism is definitely welcome.
Caped Mario - I do have to ask how you got up to the key perch. Were you able to do it in-game, or did you edit in a Feather to help you up there? ;) If you can do it in-game, I need to probably change something, because I don't want people to be able to get to the key without a Feather. Yeah, that level is unfinished as of right now, but I want to make sure it is inaccessible until after World 4.

Alright then I'll tell you. I used a special Cape Cheat. It's how I get through many of those really hard levels! I noticed that there was no feather and I was pretty suspicious of the ceiling!
No-one must know my special cape cheat but me it ruins a hacks playability!!

So...if anyone has a good idea for a name for Yoshi's sister other than "Yossi," I'm definitely open to suggestions. Nothing dumb, though - it should be in keeping with the "Marioverse."

For Yoshi's sister's name... I've thought of a few but, trying to keep the Mario theme narrowed it to 4. I sort of like all of them, but it's your choice.
Yosha (Yoshi -i, +a for a feminine ring)
Yoshihime (Princess Yoshi)
Moshi (Ms. Yoshi, compressed, sort of like Boshi from SMRPG, Blue + Yoshi)
Yoshette (sort of like Bombette)

I just played through, and I didn't find any bugs. May I ask what TWSS stands for? You have nice level design, but you didn't end up using much custom music. I like how you made shy guys a recurring enemy in the hack, instead of just being in a level or 2 occasionally. As far as ExGFX goes, I think you could have used some more ExGFX BGs, and maybe you could use the SMB3 1-2 FG for the levels with the green FG.
Edit: How could I forget this? If you ask me, the Star Coin GFX kinda clash with all the less-detailed GFX. :/ Try to make your own, or I could send you one I made, if you like.

Thanks Kyoseron - I'd have to say that unless something else spectacular comes along, Yoshette is it. I like that a lot. Thanks so much!
Boing - I appreciate your observations. As of right now, my hack is going to be called "Super Mario Bros: The Wicked Star Story." As far as ExGFX goes, I will definitely be implementing more in both the existing levels and future levels - I haven't done any custom BG's yet, so it definitely needs something like that. Thanks for the specific suggestions as to what might work. I will definitely look into it.
I agree about the Star Coin GFX - I've changed them a few times, but I actually never liked what I was able to pull off. It does definitely pop out compared to the other graphics. It's a relatively small area to work with, and I haven't pinned down my pixelated shading yet. (I was pretty pround of myself for being able to make those Micro-Paragoombas! So I definitely have a lot of room to improve my graphics editing.) If you have a Star Coin, I would love to see what you were able to do with it. Thanks for offering!

Pros
After playing this demo, I have to say that this isn't your ordinary hack. Levels were long, non-linear, and fun. I hope to see more of this, because I like what I'm seeing.
Cons
There's a small problem with difficulty. By the third level I was already sweating, I think this was due to the abundance of enemies, but I was playing with the keyboard, so maybe it's not a big problem.

Hmmm, I found the difficulty fine. Eh, I'm pretty good with the keyboard so...
If you couldn't tell, I was also a beta tester.

Looks excellent, except for the fact that that submap is too crowded. Aside from that, it is very good.
Hacks with no ExGFX (except for that classic pirahna plant) definitely make up for it in level design; this looks like no exception. From what I've heard, it is non-linear, and that is a plus that I cannot express the greatness of. From what I've also heard, the levels are both long and fun. This will keep people playing and playing for a long time.
By the way, I think Ms. Yoshi is a good name for the sister Yoshi, it's simple and doesn't represent anything someone may not know.
@Caped Mario: Crushawake knows it. Too late.

It might very well be the keyboard thing. I've only been playtesting using a controller, so that obviously makes it easier, unless you're a keyboard pro.
How many people here use a keyboard only vs. a controller? Just curious.
And thanks for the continuing compliments. I was really worried that I was going to have major errors that I had completely overlooked.
Right now, I am waiting to hear back from my beta testers to see if there are any errors/glitches to iron out. Then, I'll fix those things and work on a few more levels and put out a wide-release demo.

I think the level design was very solid. Not repetitive at all and kept things fresh. Looking forward to more of that. A criticism I have is that there weren't a wide variety of enemies in my opinion. Shyguy and snifit donimated it, if I remember right.
Also, I'm using a pad here (PSX). I didn't have a hard time completing this.

Thanks! While I did want Shy Guys to be the main enemy for Yoshi Island, I could definitely vary the enemies more. I will keep that in mind.
Thanks for playing!

I added the beginning of my game's background story to the first post.

Here's something that I was toying with today... I'm not sure if I will keep these guys, but until a real Buster Beetle custom sprite comes along, I thought this was pretty cool.

So.... if it isn't an actual buster beetle sprite, was it?? blue koopa?

I made "new" graphics for the Koopa Troopas in all their various forms. Basically, I just drew a black outline around each sprite to give it a more cartoony look that is more in keeping with several other sprites from SMW, as well as the general look that I am aiming for with the graphics in my game. I think, overall, they look better and fit in better with the game's graphics (both in my game and the original SMW), but that's just me. Any other opinions or suggestions would be great.

And, yes, Buster Beetle (two posts up) was a graphic-swapped Blue Beach Koopa.
