Why is it that most hacks have to have custom graphics these days? Why are there hardly any vanilla hacks?

Because people get tired of seeing the same original gfx over 9000 a lot of times, and it's more appealing if the custom graphics are good.

Well, hacks don't have to have custom graphics. In fact, sometimes, if a vanilla hack is made just right, it can be really impressive considering its limited resources. However, most people are getting tired of the original SMW tilesets, and would like to see some new eye candy, like what KapuBen said. And since a lot of people want it that way, more people focus on getting new graphics for their hacks. Plus, since SMW hacking has become more and more advanced, the standards for a hack have been increased. However, sometimes people they focus too much on it. Just remember that it's the level design that counts the most.

Personally, I like Vanilla hacks a lot because (a) it really forces you to be creative and (b) you discover neat things within the SMW engine that few others may know. I know I've used some very oddball things in some of my levels . . .

For Dinomar: I wasn't talking about few vanilla hacks beaing around, I was talking about how There arent that many new ones out that are more than a demo (I've already played super challenge world). Thank you, I already knew about hacks section though. I,m just saying that there arent really any new vanilla hacks that are long like super challenge world, like having 120 exits.

I agree with you, many people seem to lose the essence of sticking to the orginal SMW engine and start using lots of new stuff...
If you want a very good vanilla hack, then I would suggest The Unworld, which has 93 exits. But even the Unworld, which is claimed to be vanilla, has altered graphics from the original Super Mario World and includes a custom death block...
If you want completely 500% vanilla though, try The New Mario World. This is completely vanilla, and it has no graphical change, custom stuff, or new enemies whatsoever. It's a complete hack spanning 96 exits, I would highly recommend it. It's also quite hard on the later levels as well.

I don't care whether a hack is vanilla or has a bunch of custom stuff, as long as it's fun to play. (Custom music does really appeal to me, though...)

It's also one of the hardest hacks I've ever played.

I actually did play it. I wish there were more hacks ike that, it was another reason I started this thread. It'd be cool if it was longer though, say 40 more levels of challenging fun. That'd take me a good deal of time to beat.

I play RttC if I'm: Bored, gone insane (Wait, that describes me most of the time ), or want to listen to the music. My favorite vanilla hack, however, would be The Unworld. It's a short game with only 33 exits needed to be found (According to Dottedboy, at least, but I can't play a game without going back to finding some secrets before finishing it), but if you're looking to 100% it, it has 93 exits in total. And the secret exits are pretty well hidden.

Typically, people can pull off a lot more creative and impressive projects with a good mixture of the many resources available on this site. With just the mere SMW base alone, there's really only so much you can do. Still, if people are able to still pull off decent level design without all the fancy extras, that's great to see. Personally, I gravitate toward hacks that use more custom features, albeit, ones that use them wisely, creatively, and sensibly, and not just for kicks.

It mostly due to the accessibility and immediate aesthetic appeal of custom GFX. There's something a bit tired and tried about the original SMW graphics, and inserting new ones is a very easy and simple way to solve what some see as a problem. Sometimes the creator of the hack just prefers the look of different graphics, sometimes they add them in because they feel like it's almost a necessity. So, it's partially because it can allow for more room for aesthetic experimentation, and partially because it's a self-perpetuated custom within the hacking community.
I worked without ExGFX until I found that my levels weren't as nice-looking as they could be. Too flat with the old SMW graphics.

Yeah, it would be funny if people started getting tired of exgfx and reverted back to smw graphics. I like both regular and exgfx, but it depends on how they're used to appeal to the player. I guess I just want something that makes me feel like I'm playing smw 3, the hacked sequil to smw 1 with the origional graphics.

The thing is, some people are just elitist and think that any hack that doesn't have any ExGFX or custom music is just another boring SMW edit.
Now, there's nothing wrong with wanting to see this stuff in a hack, but what annoys me is when people try to dictate what others use and don't use in their game. Really, as long as we're doing what we want within the rules and guidelines of this site, isn't that enough? I thought we were supposed to hack SMW to have fun, not to please a bunch of elitists who want nothing remotely Mario World-ish in a hack.

Couldn't agree more.
