| Tip: The "No More Sprite Tile Limits" patch does NOT increase the limit for the amount of sprites onscreen at once. |

Hello. I was wondering if I could ask this, but with which programs should I make an editor? I think I need Game Maker, but I am not completely sure. I will not say which game the editor is for, but it will probably be liked by many people when it is done (editor). Also, is there a programming language that I need to know when making an editor (good examples that I would like to base this off of are Lunar Magic, Golden Sun: The Lost Age editor, Advance Map, etc.). Please help me, I would appreciate it.
Have a nice day.
EDIT: Also, I would like to start the editor with a few simple sections (it will be a universal editor for the one game, if that makes sense). First, I would like to start with a palette editor, and a text editor. After that, I will work on a graphics editor.
Thank someone (or some people) in advance.
Have a nice day.

As easy to use as Game Maker is, I'm about 99% sure you won't be able to make a ROM editor with it.
If you're still serious about making an editor, I would recommend you learn about the ROM, like how the ROM is organized, what each address contains, etc. Then, once you know enough to change a game through hex editing or ASM hacking, you could learn a programming language like C++ and make a program that simplifies the process of making these changes. This likely belongs more to ROM hacking or even Programming, since Game Creation is more for creating original games rather than changing existing ones.

Oh, thank you. I had a good feeling that Game Maker would not work like that, but apparently, the Golden Sun editor was made with it, so I just wanted to check some things. Anyway, thank you. I will have to learn about C++ then.
Have a nice day.

Thank you, but now I am confused... One person says to use Game Maker, and another says to use C++... I will just keep trying everything until I make a good editor that works. Thanks. By the way, can anybody else suggest either of these?
Have a nice day.

Originally posted by me in another threadOnce, I tried to make an SMW level editor in gamemaker. However, when I tried to make it read the graphics from the ROM, it became so slow you wouldn't belive it.
I replied by translating it to C++, which made it MUCH faster.
tl;dr: Use C++ (assuming you don't want it to take an hour to load a level).

If you make a game engine with Game Maker, you could make a level editor with it.

Oh neat, thank you. Wait, a game engine? Is that a game itself? If it is, then would I be able to copy the HEX data of the game and put it in Game Maker? I would really like to know, since I would like to be able to help other people who are trying to hack this game as well.
Anyway, have a nice day.

Ok this is getting confusing for me, so I'll just summarize up my own thoughts.
1) You should only use gamemaker when you want to develop your own game (NOT rom files. Just pure games for PC).
2) You should use another programming language (like C++/C#/whichever supports an GUI), if you want to make a ROM editor.
3) If you want to edit a PC game, this is another story which I don't know of.
I assume you wanted thought 2.

Yep. I did want thought two. However, I only posted a topic in this section because someone over on the Golden Sun hacking community said that the Golden Sun editor was made with Game Maker, or else I would not have even posted in here. Anyway, I do want to make a ROM editor. I only have a little bit of data collected right now, so I would not mind if I only have a text editor for now. I am planning on using C++, is it easy to learn?
Anyway, please have a nice day.

For a ROM editor you must use C#/C++, but if you want you can make a game in Game Maker, and include an editor with that.
