If you could use only 5 custom sprites, which 5 would you choose? Or, if you prefer, which sprites (any number) would you just have to include in every hack you ever made? Why would you choose those sprites? (And yes, you may choose generators or block-sprites like the donut lift.)

I'm not sure (it's very difficult to decide), but I think this would be my list:

1) Palenemy Lakitu

This is my all-time favorite sprite. It is useful because you can do so many things with it. Unless you want more than one in the same level that spawn different sprites, you can make it throw pretty much anything you want, AND you can even make it throw more than one sprite without having to change the .asm file!

2) YI Ball 'n' Chain

What can I say? This is just a cool sprite. It can even fit in almost all environments, too. (After all, it pretty much did in YI.) And since it is dynamic, you don't have to worry about its tilemap, unless you have sprites using the second half of SP4 that might conflict.

3) YI Arrow Lift

Another wonderful sprite by edit1754, this is. I've always liked platform sprites (line-guided platforms, the rotating gray platforms, etc.), and this is an excellent one.

4) Blooper

I don't know...this little guy just adds a bit of spice and variety to an underwater level. He can also be interesting to put in a non-underwater level, especially one that is kind of athletic-themed (like the x-3 stages of SMB1).

5) Hammer Bro

This sprite is a blast from the past, just a nice old classic. He throws stuff (any sprite that throws stuff is cool), and he is versatile.

Boy, though, it's definitely no easy task to decide on these. How about everybody else? If you were forced to use only 5 custom sprites for every future hack you made, which 5 would you choose?
That's a tough question, though I think I can come up with my own five:

1: Variable Width Font
Really, to anyone creating a hack with a strong plot, I see no reason why this is no essential. (Yes, it classifies as a custom sprite).

2: Roto-Disc
I've always been a huge fan of this "enemy", from Mario 3 until the time I saw it hit the custom sprites section. Not being able to spin jump on it mixed with the fact that it appears at the most inconvenient times makes it a deadly sprite.

3: Hammer Brothers
They're pretty generic, but I could see myself using them rather frequently in harder areas.

4: Screen Stopper (?)
I forget the exact name of it, but it was in STARSW.zip. Basically, it stops the screen, changes the music to boss music, and either ends the level or teleports you to a new screen once all of the enemies on the current one are dead. It would be very useful for boss fights and the like.

5: Newbie's Boss
I suppose the flexibility of this sprite makes it a definite choice for any boss fights I would want.
1.Custom newbie boss:
For the fact that you can do so much with it.

2.YI door(by edit):
It would be useful in every single castle, and even in small forts and ghost houses.

3.Pushable crate:
For the same reason I would choose the custom newbie boss

4.Custscene tool:
Very powerful for plots that you can't explain with a few message boxes.

5.lightning generator:
I suppose you could also do this with pallete ExAnimation, but that can be annoying sometimes, and doesn't work with some situations.

Technically, the cutscene tool is two sprites, which is the main reason I didn't list it. (After all, using the old method of making cutscenes would free up 40% of my sprite slots then.) I also considered the lightning generator, although I didn't think of the YI door. That sprite is cool, but when there are already normal doors (albeit much less cool), I don't know if I'd really want to use it if I only had 5 sprite slots available.

Sprites that are not enemies are always the coolest, so I'm starting to reconsider...I have to leave Palenemy Lakitu on there, though.
1 Cutscene tool.
Perfect for cutscenes
2 Newbie Boss
Even if i have problems with the graphics, you can do a lot of bosses with this guy.
3 Lightning Generator 2
I liek lightnings
4 Level Enders/Teleporters
They're perfect for bosses
5 Hammer Bro/Boomerang Bro/Fire Bro/Bullet Bro/Shell Bro/Torpedo Bro/Molotov Bro/Small Deadweight Bro/Sledge Bro/Deadweight Bro/Bone Bro/Sledge Boss
Is just a classic. The Hammer Bro, Boomerang Bro, Sledge Bro and Fire Bro are in my opinion the best sprites ever. The Bullet Bro, the Shell Bro, the Torpedo Bro, the Molotov Bro, The Deadweight Bros and the coming soon Bone Bro are just for adding more fun. You can do ALL the 7 koopalings using the Sledge Boss.

1. Hammer Brothers:
What would a Mario game be without this classic enemy? Personally, I like this Hammer Bro a lot better tnan the SMW ones.

2. YI Chomp Rock:
I've always liked this sprite from the original YI. It's a neat little thing to have that could be great for small puzzles and such.

3. Newbie Custom Boss:
They work SO much better than the boring old Koopa Kid bosses. Plus, there are so many creative ways to use it.

4. YI Bumpty:
Just a way to add a little variety to icy/snowy areas.

5. Sky pop/Marine pop:
I just love this sprite because it adds some creativity and uniqueness to your levels by letting you move freely around the level and shoot projectiles at enemies.
1 & 2. Boomerang Brothers

Yes, I love the Hammer Bro, but I've noticed his unrealiable jumping routine, plus the fact that his hammers can dissapear if they go offscreen makes him a more specific purpose sprite made for fight areas. The Boomerang Bro, his less common cousin, doesn't jump, almost never throws his weapons offscreen, and can be used in a vast amount of ways (including fights). He is simply better, in my opinion. Too bad it needs a boomerang sprite.

3. Newbie Custom Boss

Because the original bosses just don't cut for me anymore (and my ASM is not even close to full ASM bosses yet).

4. Door Generator

If you're going to have fights, you'll definently need this.

I'll reserve #5 for when I have better ASM skills, just incase I do anything good.
1. Custom Powerups

Yeah. It's basically 8 custom powerups in one sprite, by cleverly using the X position to determine the powerup flag/graphic tilemaps to set. The powerups could be hammers, boomerangs, bombs etc..

2 and 3. VWF
Even though it will probably be overused, it's a great tool for creating flexible and interactive cutscenes. Good for RPGs and the like.

4. Newbie Boss
Again, even though it's overused, it's a great sprite you should use to base your bosses off. With so many features, you can create a wide variety of bosses with it.

5. ???
No idea, really. Perhaps, for when I think about something? :P

Well yeah, those are the 4 sprites I would use. Normally though, if I was limited to 5 sprites, I'd make the X position (as well as the Y pos, extra bit etc.) determine what the sprite does. That way, you can easily create a bunch of sprites in a single sprite slot. For the 5th sprite, It'd probably be some misc stuff (pushable create, some generator) dependent on something.

Offtopic: If you could only apply 5 patches, what would they be?
Hmm, now, if you used the extra bit (the X/Y position might be a pain to work with in some sprites), that could open up more possibilities...and if you made the custom powerups into a patch, that wouldn't take up a sprite slot. I'm still trying to think of another platform sprite of some kind that could replace one of the others. I guess I could replace either the Blooper or the Hammer Bro with the Chomp Rock...

Now, if I were to apply only 5 patches?

1. No More Sprite Tile Limits: This really comes in handy.

2. Fix-All Patch by andy_k_250: Again, really comes in handy, not to mention that having this patch is almost like having two more sprite slots because of the Piranha Plant Fix. (Who really cares about the flopping Cheep-Cheep anyway?)

3. dsx.asm: I would have to have it for some of the 5 sprites I'd want.

4. Screen-scrolling pipes: Well, they're cool. If you are restricted in the quantity of your ASM hacks, you might as well go for quality.

5. Metroid Health Patch: Well, some kind of health patch, anyway, and this one is probably my favorite out of the ones that have been released so far. (Hmm...although Iceguy's health patches...okay, it's a contest between this and one of his.)
OW. lets not think about that for a moment...my heart needs to resume beating. ok it started. uhm..(boy this is a toughie) i would say a
green stem piranha plant, shell bro, a boomerang bro, a panser, and a phanto.

(of course i hope that never happens o_0 )
Okay, let's-a-see...

1: Hammer Bro - Using mah 1337 ASM skillz (hint; very basic ASM mods), I can make this guy throw other stuff, making him useful.

2+3: VWF. Most useful indeed. I can't really think of a place I couldn't use this.

4: Newbie's Custom Boss. Versatile, interesting, by far one of the best sprites out there, and the best enemy sprite IMO.

5: Sky Pop/Marine Pop. Wo doesn't like getting into an aeroplane and gunning down oncoming enemies?

So that's my five.
Ok, the patches.

1. No More Sprite Tile Limits: One of the best patches ever

2. Fix-All Patch: ^

3. N-SPC Patch: Pretty useful for custom music.

4. ExExGFX Patch: Even with his glitches, is very lovely <3

5. Slope Fix: This is the patch that avoids those slope glitches.

Most people wouldn't use this, but I find it a handy patch

5. OW ExAnimation
Overworlds are boring otherwise. :V (At least I can't do without this one.)

Custom sprites:

1 & 2. Variable Width Font (Cutscene Tool) - A complex but useful custom sprite that also supports custom music.

3. NPC's - Interactive sprites to talk to.

4. Creating/Eating Block Sprite - Custom paths without the need to hex edit the original sprite.

5. My own custom boss - For me, it's almost a piece of cake to make. :P

Patches:

1. LevelASM. Lightning in one level, custom timer in another, it sounds about right.

2. NSPC patch. Yes, even custom music needs those commands.
