I'm new to rom hacking and using ISP files and everything. All I want to do is 'play' the infamous Nico Nico Douga hack on my computer. I've got the IPS file as well as Lunar, and I've got a copy of both the american and the Japanese versions of the rom.
However, every time I try to use Lunar to Merge them, when it asks me to select the rom to merge with and the roms do not show up on the list of selectable files.
I'm renaming them to 'kumikyoku' just like the ISP but they're not showing up, what am I doing wrong?

Welcome to Smwc! Anyway, all you need to do is patch the Ips file to the ROM with this tool. The usage is pretty self-explanatory, but if you have any other questions, just post it here.

That tool there would be Lunar... the one I say I'm already trying to use. I click patch, I select the IPS file, it then gives me the window to select the rom to patch, the roms I do have are not showing up on the list so I can apply the patch.

Make sure the Rom is Super Nintendo Rom of Super Mario World. The extension should be .Smc, and when you downloaded it the Rom it should most likely have something like (!) in it's name. No idea what is wrong otherwise. Note that Roms cannot be uploaded here.

It seems like theres a good chance that you didn't unzip your rom... You can't use LIPS unless the ROM is unzipped and in .SMC format.

Your roms are not showing? Are you sure they are roms? You should be patching kumikyoku.ips to Super_Mario_World_(U)_[!].smc or something. Roms are .smc. Make sure your rom is clean via this.

Ah, I was trying to patch the .zip, since my emulator can read .zips
Okay... it says it patched sucessfully, but now when I run it I just get a blank black screen.

ok, well your ROM may not be clean or it might not be the right version of Super mario world. The first ROM I was able to find wasn't able to be patched (had the same problem), so I had to go look for a new one. Just gotta go look for a new one. I can't tell you where to find another one but just google around for a while and you should be able to find one.
Edit: Yeah, Emulators can read ZIP files but Lunar IPS can't, though there is a tool in the tool section that claims to be able to patch zipped roms, but I haven't tried it yet.

Also another solution not mentioned is some roms IE brutal Mario need to have your rom expanded first before patching you'd need to either open the rom in Lunar Magic move a block/sprite then save or use lunar expand to expand it.

Okay, I got it working, my first try was on the Japanese rom, I thought since most of this hack is in japanese it would use that one.
Though while it does play with the US version I think my emulator is messing up some of the sound effects... need to try a different one to check...

Just a little advice, when ever you apply IPS files, you should copy your clean ROM and paste it so you will always have a clean ROM.

I *always* make backups whenever I mod or change a file, habit from being a programmer.

No, the music is simply added to a recording. The level does not actually have the song.

Oh I know that, I mean the default noises of super mario... the switches aren't making the right noise, and sometimes it seems to skip a lot.

Since when does Brutal Mario need your rom to already be expanded?
I know that Demo world the legend continues by Fusoya has to be expanded to 8 mb though.

Sometimes you have to open the file in Lunar Magic to expand the header to x200 bytes.

No, you NEVER have to expand your rom to patch a file (save Demo World.) because the IPS should do that itself. Don't let anyone tell you different.
Anyway, I've got this fully working, and you say it won't work, eh...That might be a performance of your computer thing. Skips, anyway, sound likely.

No clue why but when I patched Brutal mario to a clean rom without expanding first all the graphics were screwed up and looked awful (Same result after the 3rd or 4th try seeing as sometimes patching does screw up). After just moveing an object in the clean rom to expand it brutal Mario patched just fine.
