SMW: Search for the silver stars

Standard

Yes, lame name, newbie rip-off premise, whatever.

Anyway, I'm not entirely sure I have enough for an entire thread, but I do have a few things I feel might be worth posting.

The plot is that Bowser has escaped to the realm of gods by gathering the Silver Stars for himself. He then gave these to his children to protect them, you gotta get them so you can get into the god realm (named the Ethereal Eternity for alliterative lulz) and defeat Bowser.

I took out Yoshi coins because I suck at ASM, and I thought star doors were a cool concenpt. That, and I usually just find that my placement of Yoshi coins ends up sucking and distracting from the level.

Here is the first level:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1Q_091DVBBM&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1Q_091DVBBM&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I should note that I have updated the graphics since posting that.
The new ones look something like this:

An underwater segment in the second level:

Its features include starfish ripped off from Super Mario TKO. I wanted to make it more action-ey than it was...

Part of the current Mystic Meadows 3:

And lastly, a video of Larry's castle.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/71tJmlRZ7AU&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/71tJmlRZ7AU&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I am yet to add custom backgrounds, I should note. I want to make most of the graphcis myself, for the sake of originality and arrogance.
Also, the levels in the videos have been changed a bit since posting the videos (IE the cheap sideways spike trick in the layer 2 room of Larry's castle has been removed) What do you guys think so far?
This actually looks pretty interesting and fun! I have to admit, the first time I saw this topic, I thought it would just be another newbie posting a topic telling us that they were making a Super Mario World hack about silver stars using AOL-speak and leaving that at that until they were told to post screenshots, at which point they would "grace" our eyes with screenshots of unplayably difficult levels full of cutoff and floating Munchers, but you proved me wrong.

Your custom graphics are pretty nice. They really fit the Super Mario World "theme", and the palettes aren't awful, either. From what I can see, your level design is above-average, too.

Keep up the good work!
That was pretty... descriptive. Along with what Midna said, I also expected this to be an average vanilla hack. From what I can see, you know your way around Lunar Magic and your graphics are nice alternative to SMW's foreground. I also like the idea of Star Doors, but rather than making them solid when the stars aren't collected, make them pass-through.
I would make the Star Doors pass-through pre-Star collection, but my knowlege of ASM is basically limited to combining, adding, or remving a few basic lines of code from other custom blocks and sprites. I tried making it work right, but because I know next to nothing, I couldn't make it work - It would either not act like a door when I got the stars, or would act like a door before I got them. I'm honestly pretty sure that someone has written a code that would be just perfect for it, but I'd have no idea what to search for even if there was. It's also partly out of sheer laziness and procrastination, and I know that these aren't excuses, but goodness, ASM is frightening and/or annoying if you don't know what you're doing.
I have got to admit.
For a "newbie"(pardon me if I interpreted your message wrong) your concept of level design looks quite nice.
Although if you could add custom music to that level....
You would have a pretty good level there.
Although if you are going for a vanilla hack that will do just fine.
Also if you could fix up that ASM stuff to make it better.

Overall pretty good I say.
Looks pretty nice, I just thought at first it was just another newbie showing of level edits and glitches. But you seem to have experience and haven't just joined with a fresh mind of hacking. Nice Job and keep up the good work:D
Everything looks nice, and level design is pretty great too. Your custom graphics are nice and original, and that's good. Just one thing I suggest it to make the Star Door rounder around the edges, it's too square right now.
Just a note here: Don't expect particularly frequent updates from me, I can be somewhat slow sometimes.

Anyway, yar, update, blar.

The third level of world 1. Not really sure about this one, it'll probably be redone (again)to fit in a little longer, and more fair in some spots (i.e, midway is "think fast" style, and has Mario behind a tree... whoops...)
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5QAct8wgAjw&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5QAct8wgAjw&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
As stated in the video, levels with a large dot on the overworld map will be longer, a bit harder, and offer a save. That way I can have a save system similar to SMW's original, but don't have to do silly things like put Ghost Houses/Fortresses/Castles in caves.
Also, the main overworld:

Along with a background I have been working on for it (not sure if this should just go in the exGFX thread...)

I think this could use a bit of improvement. Any suggestions? I'm trying to create a sort of perspective effect. Not working too well.
I see what you're trying to do, but it still looks like it has too much of a top view to me. The only idea I have would be to keep the cliffs the same height or higher, but have the tops be a lot smaller so it looks more like it's from a side view.

WOW, the OW looks GREAT!!!! The design is excellent! And... your level design are great too, nice ExGFX you're using.
Fierce Deity is cool.
Workin' in OW request...
Currently attendind Scape Santa, but I don't know what to do...
wow, just like midna said: I thought this thread was gonna be a newbie post, but i guess i was proved wrong. The ow is great, and the graphics are awsome, keep up the good work, and i shall update my hacks to play list, and keep an eye on this thread.
Excellent job ^_^ I love that custom background, how it looks like you can see the entire land from the peak of a mountain. You're doing very well! Keep it up, man, and this is gonna get featured ;)

I hope you have permission. Otherwise, this is pure awesomeness.
That overworld is astounding. The desert graphics are some of the best I've ever seen in my whole time on the site. In fact, the overworld is probably the first one that I'd rate a 10/10 on a review. Holy. (Though maybe add a few more icebergs in the water, but this is a super nitpick.)

The background looks... odd, though. The perceptive looks way to different from the foreground.
