Tip: Avoid blind jumps. If the player has to jump down a random hole to proceed with no indication at all that they can go down there, you've done something wrong!

Wow. This actually looks really nice, Neosz. The HDMA on the title screen looks very pretty and fits really well there. As the video, it's nice to see that people are making good use of my YI soundtrack. :) The song fits really nicely there. The transluscency effect in the level works pretty well; it definately gives off that "crystalline" feeling that you were going for. The level design seems to have a bit of variety, which is nice. Anyway, the gimmick itself is pretty neat. Does anything else happen when Mario collects all 8 red coins, or does he just get a 1up like with the Yoshi coins?
Jimmy, as we discussed on IRC, at the time it just gave a 1up, but after you left last night, I decided rather than a 1up + a leaf in the item box, that a 1up + a random item would be a better idea. Here's a short video for you.

Well. The video is taking FOREVER to upload, so here's a screenshot of my new Yoshi's Island styled overworld border. Jimmy is going to be making me a patch to make the scrolls load as sprites, so you'll be able to see the whole thing xD.

EDIT: IT FINALLY UPLOADED :O

Wow. This is really impressive. And the level design is good too. Congratulations!
This hack is starting to bundle up nicely :D

I like the overworld, especially the new border you implemented, copycat it looks like the one from YI.

I like the red coin system you implemented, having it give you a 1up and an item :o

n0ice, keep it up :)
Everything looks just awesome, and I love some of the neat things you implemented. Oh, and the groundpound, did you code it yourself, because it is quite nice.
My only suggestion is to change the red coin's palette so that it is similar to the ones in YI. In that game, the red coins blended in with the yellow coins because they almost look like yellow coins themselves except they had a shade of red to tell those two coins apart.

Right now, it looks like the player used the magnifying glass to reveal all the red coins. They stick out too much. Other than that, everything looks awesome. I can't wait to see the overworld map to scroll like a real map. :)
He wanted to give the red coins a red tint like in Yoshi's Island at first, but decided against it because:

1. The coins aren't hidden amongst others
2. He wanted them to be like the modern Red Coins in NSMB/Wii

Anyway NeOsZ, this hack is looking very impressive indeed. Can't wait to play it, especially since you agreed to let me beta test. :P
Quick Update. Thanks to Jimmy<3, the scrolls on the overworld border are now sprites, therefore I have more layer 3 space, and they look better. Here's a screenshot.

My winter break is now officially over, so progress on the hack will probably be a bit slower. Night all.
No idea how you did it, but it looks great! Still can't believe school starts again tomorrow...
Oh boy. I can't believe I almost let this get to the second page >__<. Anyways, first and foremost, I do NOT have any material updates, as I've been very busy the past few days. Secondly, I'm going to change the way this thread is going to work a bit. Instead of me showing off videos of any random level, which I've been doing, from now on, I will cut it down to only one video per world and all ASM hacks will be done in test levels so I don't spoil the real ones. I will have my supporters vote on which level they want a video on after I show screenshots of each level in the world. Third, progress on the hack has been slow, and will probably continue to be slow considering I've been very busy, and I have English midterms next week and a project to do over the weekend. Last, but not least, my copy of Paper Mario 2 has come on the mail and I've started playing it, and when I play a game, my creations tend to get a slight influence from it.. yes, Super Mario's Untold Story will probably have a Paper Mario 2 influence in the story, characters and levels. No I will not make the game a copy of Paper Mario 2 in any way but some of it will probably be inspired by it naturally because I'm playing it. Well.. This is the longest post I've EVER written and this is about all I have. I'm terribly sorry I don't have any screenshots to show as it makes every post prettier :). I also don't expect you to read all of this, but if you do, congratulations XD. Actually, you know what? I feel like being nice. I happened to notice my cloud submap looks awesome with the new overworld border so I'll give you a screenshot of that.

EDIT: Also, here's a new "5 am" HDMA gradient I made.

I might tone down the pink a little, considering it might be a little "trippy"

Hm, well, that cloud palette/graphics are some of the best I've seen using only the overworld editor and no custom shenanigans.
Yep. Very nice work there.

Also, I have to agree with you on the whole 'Tone down the pink' thing, because yeah, it takes up most of the gradient.
Even you don't get rid of some of the pink, you could probably fix this by giving the pink a greyish tinge.
Stop with the awesome and give me a chance to impress people for once. :(

Hey, if it makes you feel any better, I haven't been able to impress anyone either.
I can't believe i've ignored this hack.
The overworld never ceases to amaze me, and i like the layer 3 effect in the red coins level.
Oh boy.. I FINALLY have an update for you guys :3. I haven't updated lately considering I've been loaded with homework + and I haven't been too inspired to do much with the hack.. Hopefully you guys will like this update.

So, I decided that after every evening level in my hack, the overworld to change to night time, so I have done just that, by using the special world is passed palettes and HDMA Effects. I think it came out pretty awesome.

Day Time:

Night Time:

Here's a video :D

I've probably done a few smaller updates in this time and forgot about them, so if I find anything, I'll upload some more pictures.

EDIT: Beginning of the replacement for "Dangerous Dinos!", a tide level with a pretty HDMA, and Jimmy's port of Jolly Roger Bay with SM64's strings O_o. That's a mouthful.

This is looking very nice. However, Having the brightness gradient for one submap and not any others is a bit strange. Is there a way to make it ignore the border?
Maybe i could make it go behind Layer 3.. I'll see what I can do tommorow :P. And I'm planning to learn more about HDMA channels so I can have brightness AND color gradients in the same overworld/level ;).
I've found your hack via Youtube recently, and I have to say I'm impressed. While the ASM might not be as advanced as what some hackers here can do, you really implement it to not just impress but improve the gameplay. It's the first hack in a while I can say I'm excited to see a demo for, well done.

As for the HDMA- you just used OWasm, yes? It looks as such. If so, does that run as the OW is loading? That fade-in, to be precise.
Heh, thanks Maxx :> and yes, I'm using OW_ASM. Here's an overworld update I whipped up in a few minutes, I've added a bit of a mountainous area, I haven't added much decoration yet, so don't go crazy about it.

Nice! That overworld is shaping up quite nicely, if I do say so myself... the only thing I'm not really fond of are those pond thingies (?) attached to the highest cliff on the left... it just looks way too unreal to me, and although Mario games often have senseless stuff in them, I reckon that's just a bit too much. No worries, though - it might be just me, heh.

Oh, and by the way, I noticed your overworld looks kind of bland as well - throw in some decorations an- *shot*
