I voted for Kirby but otherwise awesome!
you can vote on what songs to port?

No, #lolmusic voted for what series they wanted this project to be on.
I do hope you realize this if you even hope to achieve any sort of quality which 95% of the original songs had, you won't be able to do it without emulating enveloping. To put this into a broader perspective, I actually ran out of sample slots - NOT bytes - while setting up my Disco Train port (you can hear a failed attempt here - and yes, practically every note is a different sample in some channels). It is possible with some songs (i.e. Stickerbrush, the map theme, etc) but most of the time these ports will end up sounding like garbage with SMW's instruments.

Just my two cents.

i got a question about samples, what kind of wav files do you use? or do you use something else? it alsways makes my tries sound terrible plus its hard ton get enough space when i even try a 1 second wav file
I don't use WAV files. I insert my samples from the original SPCs and then tune them with $E5.
On another note, since I really hope this goes somewhere (placing my faith in it since the Mega Man one went smoothly), going to sticky this for now. This will likely be one of the most difficult soundtrack projects in terms of accuracy and making the tracks not sound like total garbage, so I would love to see some magic happen.
Yes, this is going to be the hardest task that many of us in #lolmusic have faced. I want to make something clear before it comes up (since SNN reminded me).

This project will not move at the rate that Project Megasong has. (for those who don't know, we actually slowed our rate of progress for that since C3 was at the time 3 months away) Donkey Kong Country has some of the most complex music I have ever seen, with some songs using over 40 samples. SNN explained this to me, DKC used different samples per different note sometimes for a fake enveloping effect. Even with Carol's more.bin, which will be needed for a great deal of songs, sample space is still a major issue. Another thing to keep in mind is that almost every 8-bit megaman song ported was resequenced by Sivak Drac, who's work is incredibly accurate. There are no "magic midis" for Donkey Kong Country, and some of the songs will require us (read: Slash Man and SNN) to resequence the songs ourselves. I am however trying to keep up a certain pace so that interest is not lost. Our goal is to be done from late fall 2010 to early winter 2011.
Well Atma, I'm not a miracle worker. I realize that many DKC songs are very complex, heck it took me over a week to get the notes for my Stickerbrush port right (I nearly ran out of staff paper trying to transcribe it once) and another week - week and a half to get the ADSR, pitch slides, volumes, pan fades etc as close as possible. I've tried in the past resequencing a few DKC midis but many are just too ambient which is another reason I chose the ones such as Stickerbrush, Water World, Snakey Chantey, because I don't want to deal with Carol's MORE.bin to be honest. Songs like Mining Melancholy and Disco Train however, good luck to whoever decides to port those. =\

Luckily many of the DKC songs don't have note patterns I've never heard so it wont be TOO much of a problem, no complex triplet patterns, dotted 8th 16ths etc. I might have the time/patience so re-sequence. I can't make any promises though.

Also, I'm doing fairly decent on Snakey Chantey and Forest Interlude without the fake pitch envelopes so far.

EDIT: I also claim "Hangin' at Funky's" from DKC3. Jazz :> plus there's no MIDI of it and there's no complex note patterns.

Ooh, this sounds like an interesting project. One such song I hope gets complete is "Hot Head Hop" hence the fact that is my favorite DKC series song.

I do hope this turns out to be a success, and not one of those projects that are halted or completely stopped in mid production.
I've got a good start on my Rocket Run MP3 (MIDI). Some of these tracks may actually cause us to run out of bytes though. We'll have to be pretty conservative on which samples we import and which ones we use from the original.

Will try to have this done in the next two weeks, but with the LDC and RL, it may take a bit longer.

e: throw me on for Disco Train as well. I'm a masochist.

Great! I love DKC music and now it's a whole project! Once I get some lessons on music, I'll join in and help you.
DKC has some of the best video game music ever, so PLEASE don't ruin its legacy by making the ports sound like crap.
Yeah, no pressure or anything...

Well, I really, really hope this turns out well. I was among the people who voted for DKC as the series to port from, so I'm glad that my wish was granted. I'm just worried about not contributing enough to the project...I'm not exactly great at porting music. I've never used samples or Carol's Addmusic, and I'm no N-SPC genius. But I have a question. Those 2-3 weeks...do they have to take effect immediately? And can we claim more than one song at once? I have several in mind that I'd like to take, but I have about three other ports that I've been semi-working on, and I'd kind of like to get those done first...yet at the same time, I don't want all of the ones I want to get taken already. Another thing...do we have to include the ambient sound effects? Take the DKC2 lava theme, for example. Other than the sound of the lava bubbling, it sounds like a fairly easy song to port by DKC standards. Would it be okay to leave out the bubbling noise and just concentrate on the actual music? (That would also apply to, for example, the wind at the beginning of the DKC3 mountain theme.)
I didn't vote but DKC is a pretty good choice. How did this get stickied?

Let's start using quotes to answer quote |-O

Also, I think that's Smallhacker's way of wishing us luck.
Oh cool...
For now, put me on the list for Mining Melancholy from DKC2. I'm claiming that one.

...

Yes I am serious.
