I know, this question has probably already been answered before, and this will most likely be trash-canned because it's such a noobish question, but how come all patches are now required to be in Xkas format?

IPS is extremely inconvenient, and some only work on clean ROMs. If you MUST have IPS, Ultimaximus has a ton of them on his profile.

IPS patches often corrupt a ROM if you try and patch more than one. With as many patches available as there are nowadays, it makes more sense to use a format that allows you to us as many patches as you have space for in the ROM.

Yes, xKas allows you to insert more than one patch, whereas if it's a .IPS file, you can only have one patch.

Not necessarily - there are lots of IPS patches that work on edited ROMs. The main advantage of xkas patches is their configurability. Have you ever tried configuring an IPS patch?
Also, many IPS patches need free space too, and it's much easier to set that in xkas patches.

Summary:
IPS
-Takes a lot of work to look at the inner code.
-Cannot change where it places the new code (causing overwrites of old code, killing your ROM).
Xkas
-Very easy to see and (if you have ASM knowledge) edit the code.
-Manual space management takes some work, but allows as many patches as you want.
It's like the difference between sending someone a program and its source code. The IPS patch is pretty much preprocessed code, and it has to be reverse engineered to change it, whereas the Xkas patch can be easily read and changed.
