Awesome work, THY. The amount of tilesets combined into this picture is astounding, and it all looks great and stuff. You did very well on this one!

Multi scroll clouds for the win. They increase production time by about 25% though, so :(

Oh, it's for the contest.

GN: Very, very nice. I liked the palettes and overall feel of the level, But the first door have cutoff.

I once showed this vid a long, long time ago, but i'm posting it again for some more feedback.

Probably going to remake this tileset and cut out some screens, due to the new rule. I know about the cloud and pokey problem. Features: Vanilla save system, and Vanilla NPC system.

Last screens for today.

Just because.
Since everybody else is doing it,

GN: Very nice castle, great colors and decorations! Keep on the good work!

@ The Gamer: I've seen that level before, its really lovely. The only thing I don't like that much is the clouds.

@ Majora211: Cute little grassland you got there, good combinations for the BG. Keep working on this, add more decorations.

@ Roy: ROOOOOOY:O

@ Hobz: I like what you got going there, gives me a really serious/ creepy vibe. Keep working on this, add some more ruins maybe.

Lots of videos going on here, I'll just add another. This is how
I'll build my level for the vanilla thingy, simple.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/uBGB7K4-VNw?fs=1&hl=nb_NO"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/uBGB7K4-VNw?fs=1&hl=nb_NO" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
EDIT: very hard to see in this vid, but I use the underground soil GFX as..
soil GFX here instead of the squarish grassland soil.

Let me start my post positive, it will end very negative, I warn you all. But my one positive comment is Uhrix, that looks awesome. Single most creative vanilla thing yet this year, and so far you deserve gold by far. I would never have thought of that, you just... ah it's just really great. Note Uhrix that the stuff below doesn't apply to you, you're awesome, this negative stuff below is for certain other people.

Now, negative stuff about other people. Dammit, why must I
always be the one to call out copiers?! You guys know better, this site is full of smart people, why, why, why?! Oh well, here I go:
foop: I respected you.

You showed off this. Looks nice of course. You are creative and talented, but this is a huge rip-off of Lynnes's 2010 level design contest entry. Here's a video of Lynnes's(please, if you are going to enter this conversation watch the whole video):
Quote
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/DYSOEazvjmQ?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/DYSOEazvjmQ?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Is anyone else not seeing the blatant resemblance between foop's entry's first room(the jail cell), and Lynnes's(the jail cell), which was made a year ago? And how about the theme? The flying fortress, foop? That's what Lynnes's level is, too. Gah, the similarities... too many, and I'm positive you copied. C'mon man, you're creative, so create things for yourself.

GN: I know you took that idea from Lynnes. Here's a screenshot of something Lynnes made(not me) many months ago:
Quote

You know that your level is too close to his for its own good. Also, how did you get the clouds over the caste w/out layer 2(I know they're not on a different layer than the castle because the other layer is the background, as you can see because it scrolls at a different rate). So I'm guessing you combined them via yychr. That's not allowed iirc.

Just, too many hackers in this contest are cutting corners, cheating, completely ruining the contest for those of us who DON'T cheat. You should be ashamed, I have just lost so much faith in vanilla hacking and smw central. I know its just a damn contest but I don't care, it fucking sucks.

Now just letting you guys know, I'm not like Lynnes's servant or anything, I just want to at least have my voice heard and try to level the playing field so people have to work as hard as each other. The fucking contest's theme is to both be original(i.e. making your own ideas) and use smw's resources and stay vanilla. This is just a tremendous disappointment. And the sad thing is your levels "look so nice" you'll probably win.

And to the people who DON'T cheat, like Uhrix and two_headed_yoshi and mariovs.shadow, I thank you. You guys are awesome.

Don't get mad at other members who have nothing to do with this alleged copying. Believe it or not, many people on this site are occupied with other things which keep them from studying a database of thousands of hacks, including contest entries, to pick up each subtle similarity between them.
I'm gonna go and say, yea, I was inspired by his entry last year, but I didn't intend for it to be a rip off of his... I guess I was a little over-inspired, let's say. I liked the idea of a fortress in the sky, but I guess it would've ended up too similar to his, what with all the same graphics being vanilla and all. I'll change up my entry to have another theme, but I atleast want to keep the jail cell.. #w{:<}
Well after that post Spud, I honestly feel as if I'm treading on thin ice here (and probably about to fall in the river to continue with the analogy):

I know this type of multi-layered effect has been used countless times before, just thought I myself would join the bandwagon. No I have not started on the sprite or Mario palettes yet, and I may saturate the palettes just a bit more to match with what I'm going for.

Why is that I have an inexplicable feeling of guilt as I post this?

Edit: @Majora211: Nice job incorporating the level destruction tiles (the background) into a level setting. Although the perspective seems a little off to me with the addition of the grass 'foreground' from the destruction sequence. So because of that, I have to ask: is that 'foreground' an actual part of the foreground or is it a part of the background?

This seems like just a peachy time to post a video concerning the vanilla contest.

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/j4MSbXjONIw?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/j4MSbXjONIw?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

That puzzle at the end will probably be replaced or made more obvious somehow. If I can find a good vanilla replacement for the "creating/eating block" tile, that doesn't resemble the brown blocks so much, then I might keep it as it is.

It probably needs MOAR ENEMIES too, but I can't really think of where they'd go so far.

Also have vanilla down-only blocks been done before? I've never seen them but I don't play a lot of hacks.

Because I'm an asshole and you fear my disapproval. Well, your screenshot looks awesome! Very creative, and even if it's been done before it's so simple yet has so many uses it isn't copying in my book. Nice job.

@Jacob: I know you're right. I was just a bit frustrated since this is the umpteenth time I've felt the need to point this kind of thing out. I'm sorry though.

And sorry I'm an asshole, SMW Central. I just am when I'm mad. And it had to be pointed out. But again, sorry I can't deliver the message nicer :<
Well you didn't say I copied anybody and you didn't say I didn't. So yeah, I guess I'll take your ignoring as a mutual agreement of sorts that I didn't. Cool.

Anyways, E-man for the sake of asking are the trees on the top and the bottom on layer 1? I only ask as I see a part of a cloud (Which if staying should be given a new palette as well) is cutoff and it couldn't be if it was vanilla. Awesome palette by the way.

e2: nvm

You are correct there Hobz. Both the top and bottom forest tiles are on layer 1 with the smiling cloud and the darker forest tiles on layer 2 (it's absolute madness to keep track of by the way). And yeah, I'll be making that one cloud tile a bit darker, slipped my mind to be honest.

@Spud: Thank you for the compliment, and I'm glad that you like. Also don't be so hard on yourself man. If anything at least you were blunt and straight to the point about it as opposed to giving an incredibly long (sugar-coated) speech about the issue. At the same it really does throw in a nice reminder of being creative when it comes to the contest as opposed to directly copying ideas from previous years.

So yeah. . .
The rules of this contest could be made so much simpler. Three rules are all that are needed to remove the gray areas:

1. Lunar Magic is the only program that can be used
2. Everything within Lunar Magic can be used except the 8x8 graphics editor
3. Only two exits are allowed

This would get rid of all the gray areas with ExGFX, because a tile editor is necessary to compile an ExGFX file.

Something I am working on.
@Volke uhh this might just be me but your palete is well, not following any theme, nothing matches, and looks weird. Not sure what you are showing off other then a rainbow level.

I finally was able to not kill my self two seconds into recording and could show off the level. =P

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ubZwkt0k8aw?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ubZwkt0k8aw?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
So, maybe, I will not throw screenshots of something vanilla, but rather show random failure while trying to make NPC work with VWF tool without having to insert hijack.

(that effect on second screenshot is just plain awesome BTW even if it was unintentional, because game crashed, maybe I will make intentional version of it)

And, this hapenned once while I was trying to do this effect (funky, isn't it?).

I once managed to do it, but for some reason it wasn't reading correct message.

Testing ASM scripts is like awesome.

@two_headed_yoshi: Awesome haunted forest. I suppose. I would add some haunted custom music, but it's awesome level. You even managed to use Layer 2 for scrolling background, and not as just helper for Layer 1.
@Volke: Palettes could be a but better, though a good start nonetheless. Is there a gimmick behind the rainbow color scheme?

@two_headed_yoshi: Looks amazing! You really do a good job mixing tilesets, and working with them to make them look fresh and new. Especially The Grassland/Ghost House/Castle tilesets. I remember your A2MT level (Forest Fever I think it was) did the same thing, but here you got even more creative. I hope to see more like this soon, so keep up the great work!

Anyway, just a couple of screens to show a new graphical replacement and the graphical combination being used for the level I'm working on (though it's half complete, I forgot to take screens :P ). The graphical replacement is for the DKC Zinger Sprites, and is a Bubbles Badnik from Sonic 3 and Knuckles' Marble Garden Zone (the BG for that zone is the BG in this level; and later Sonic 4). The level it's self is a sort of road to the ruins, as you start in a lush field but as your progress in the level, more and more ruins and structures will appear, with this level having a Miniboss at the end (used the Boss Sprite, my first custom boss kinda. Don't worry, it's not a stationary boss that shoots projectiles and spits koopas xD). Once I fix a couple of little bugs, I'll make a video of it.
