Tip: Try sketching out ideas for overworlds and levels. Even if they don't manage to fit into Lunar Magic completely, at least you have a base to work from, instead of doing it all from scratch.

It's been six months since I first announced my newest project, A Severed Freedom, and the hack's been in development for a year now. If you're not familiar with the hack, I'd highly suggest checking out the first C3 thread.

So far, progress has been going very well. With over 20 levels done, it won't be long until I'm halfway done with the hack, which will end up being over 50 levels long. As I've said before and as I'll say again, I will not be releasing any demos or level samplers! Making these would not only discourage me from finishing the final project, but it doesn't really offer a good glimpse into what the hack's really about.

What I do have to share though is two new level videos... one of them may seem a little familiar.

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JTqNVWmF7yA&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JTqNVWmF7yA&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/SMUerarJEl8&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/SMUerarJEl8&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Did I mention I've got plenty of screenshots as well? Most of these have been posted in the screenshot thread before, but here they are in case you missed them.

Lastly, I've got a lot more music to share as well!

Donkey Kong Country 2 - Lockjaw's Saga
S.N.N. Original - Aurora Snowland
S.N.N. Original - Lava Thicket
S.N.N. Original - Zephyr Palace
Terranigma - Crysta
Terranigma - Lhasa

Once again, I'd like to thank all the people who have helped me progress through the project, especially SNN, who, as you can see, has provided quite a few great themes for the hack. With this continued support, both from testers and hackers who appreciate my effort to create an altogether new, story-driven experience, I'm highly motivated to work toward a final, full release. Thanks a lot, and feel free to comment!
awesome graphics, thats what makes this hack stand out the most. also mine cart ride? COOL!
If it wasn't made too obvious, this is currently my favorite hack in the making by miles. Having played bits and pieces of it, I can promise that anyone who plays this is in for one of the best SMW experiences ever created - and I am not saying that lightly. I don't think I have ever seen a hacker as devoted to their levels, story, graphics .. everything .. as ST has been this past year.

As stated, it is story-driven, although the story is so good that even people who can't appreciate storylines in SMW hacks will enjoy this. Some kinks need to be worked out for sure, but in the grand scheme of things, it is very, very enjoyable.

This is a prime example of a hack that needs to be completed.

Holy hell. I was amazed when I saw the C3 presentation from you last year of this hack, to see the update of it this year, it is safe to say that you did not disappoint Supertails. The graphics that you have shown in the levels and as well in the videos is rich in design and detail, aiding to the overall presentation of the hack. To boot the custom music prefects each level's theme adding in that extra little bit that makes the level perfect. I look forward to the day when this is completed and the time when I will be able to play the hack for myself.
5 Seconds into those songs and they already sound freaking amazing.
Definitely some good graphics you got there Supertails. Everything looks very well designed and setup, especially the screenshot with the mine cart and track. I just love to see what else you can put into this hack. Because really, this hack has it all, great level design, amazing graphics, some ASM, and simply outstanding music. I just can not wait till this hack gets released.
Wow...nice to see some progress on this hack, Supertalis. The level design looks pretty fun. I like the gimmick with the spinning barrels in the first vid and those elevator things in the second one. It's also nice to see you using your "It" level again...heh.

I am liking those graphics as well. You drew them yourself, right? The music you ported for the hack sounds really good as well, I like that you used some new samples too. Those are quite uncommon to hear in most ports.

Well...keep up the good work. I look forward to playing this.
The music for that shrine place is absolutely beatiful, the ambience of this hack is outstanding, seriously ST, amazing work.
Finally, another hack with an interesting storyline and GFX that are not just SMW-reskins!
The dark atmosphere and the perfectly fitting music match up with the storyline, the enemies look nothing like those in SMW and the hack as a whole looks alot more "real" than most others, which I like.

The only thing that bothers me though is that the Mario jump sounds haven't been changed.
I don't think they fit the atmosphere and the "reality" of the game at all.
Then again, I don't know which other sound a jump in a SMW hack should make... :D
I see a lot of effort you have put into this hack Supertails. It is nice to see how it is almost half way done. I am hoping to see the rest of it in a year or so. (Maybe sooner?)

You just keep up the work on this. I just know this is going to be so amazing when I finally get to play it. #w{=)}
The music is beautiful and fitting. Well, you have a lot of experience in music. You worked hard on it, and the result will be incredible.
Supertails, old friend! I hereby take my hat off to you! This is freaking amazing. You are an SMW Hacking God!
Thoroughly enjoyed both of your level videos in how lengthy and action-oriented they are without becoming redundant. Nonlinear action levels are my favorite styles. The two levels also demonstrate very different ideas. Lava thicket is probably going to scare the crap out of me when I have to use a barrel over a lava pit... that is legit nightmare fuel, dude. LEGIT. ;;;""

What really catches my imagination about your levels are the doors with the 4 above it... I am guessing these have something to do with secret exits and expanding into the rest of the hack and the crystals are obtained from like boss battles or something. I forget if you said anything about it before.

Looking at your music listed... I like the part in Zephyr Palace where you can hear the wind as only a few instruments play; the other two tracks by SNN are enjoyable but I have no specific comment on any part in particular. I never played Terranigma but the two tracks you got there seem great for towns.

IIRC, I've said before in #lolmusic your graphic style reminds me of a children storybook in that the palettes are so soothing without strong contrast, everything is easy to identify, most grainy qualities seen are not a random, misfit attempt to create detail, but for actual shading and almost KDL3-like linework that assist this style. There really is no other hacker's graphics with a similar style, making ASF (and FD) stand out in that respect. Between last C3 and this one, I think your style became a little more refined in this direction.

However, I think the big bush object seems overly grainy (and looks too similar to SMW's) and that in the large ice pillar, the light on the left side seems to flatten one side of it and that like in your shop, the pillar should have just a smidge of dark before the left end, then it's perfect IMO.

Out of all your backgrounds, I like your interior ones the most, especially the mine in the first screenshot. I think your snowy mountain BG could benefit from 1.71 if your patches don't conflict, though it is still a good background since with one GFX file, a mountain BG with a lot of variety and detail is hard to make.

If you are posting more screenshots later, I look forward to seeing more of your overworld if you have enough done.

Finish A Severed Freedom. IT's awesome.

@jimmy: tauls > Supertalis. :O
But barrels are awesome because of DKC, so despite the TeRrIfYiNg fear, you'll still be eeee'ing.

In other news, I've uploaded some higher quality versions (read: MP3s) of my three originals for this hack, in case anyone wants to download them.

"Aurora Snowland"
"Lava Thicket"
"Zephyr Palace"
I knew this would be here, I just did.

This is the one hack that I know is potentially the greatest hack of all time. And I really want to know the plot too, I love plot driven hacks. The Levels look incredibly fun, the graphics fit perfectly and the music is amazing.

Don't stop work on this or I will die inside. Yep. (/blackmail?)

It's awesome because so few hacks can succeed at being as scary as the layer 2 spikes in Wendy's Castle or Valley Fortress. LEGIT.

HQ Zephyr Palace and Aurora Snowland are going on my Winamp playlist. The latter grew on me a lot with its peaceful feel and promotes focus. Anymore tracks from ASF you are presenting in HQ?

I've done four others. Two are brand new, and ST doesn't want me to show them (mostly because of spoilers), and two semi-old ones.

"Mortus Graveyard"
-this corresponds to the fourth screenshot, with the sunset background.

"Effiga Mines"
-this corresponds to the first screenshot, with the mine cart.

they share similar phrases at parts. The graveyard track was the first song I ever made for ASF, way back in November. Time sure has gone by fast.
i'm a huge fan of your work, Supertails, your custom graphics is what inspired me in making my owns, your graphical style is just amazing, and your hack is the only few i truly appreciated in there, no deny that you put a lot of effort into this, i'm happy to see this thread, good luck in your project :)
The music and graphics are outstanding ST.
Some of the level design 'perks' I can see from the screens are astonishing, like the mine cart run, and the DKC barrels, as an example.

And taking SNN's word for it, this looks to be one of the greatest SMW hacks ever made.

The atmosphere in every single screenshot is awesome as well, but especially this one.

Also, I'm doing the same thing with not releasing a demo. It's just better that way, in my opinion.

Fun fact: since its first preview two C's3 ago, this hack remains your sole recourse for all your parrot-smashing needs.
